i think the answer is HYPE & REPUTATION  . yes the wing cars have crazy speed , and the touring drivers have refined their tallent beyond normal comprehension  . there is a reason why we dont see pure wing drivers transition to nascar or at least get a chance . on face book i stated that the 4-12 usac pas race was standard issue . what some might not realize is that our standard issue is beyond spectacular !!

Agree with everthing John said! and let me also just say what a good night our little JSR team had. JJ and Cody were the last cars to hit the track in qualifing and both did well with Cody slotted in 11th and JJ in 14th. great tack conditions. Both drivers struggled in the heats but turned it up in the Main. Cody battled for several laps at the end with the Cuzer and Super Ricky and brought it home with a top ten finish! Very Proud of him to say the least!

Over all I thought it was a great show and glad nobody was hurt with the airborn frt axle!

See ya all on the 3rd of May!

Setting aside the Wing vs. No Wings debate for a moment , The Big ? is why does the WoO draw consistently big crowds & USAC/CRA does not , if every one starts thinking along the lines of let's look @ the WoO model & how we can improve on that, I submit that is when West Coast Open Wheel Racing has the best chance @ success .... or we can do the same thing over & over again & hope for a different result !

Roy, there are several reasons why the WoO draws consistent big crowds and USAC/CRA does not nearly as big.

First and foremost, the Outlaws are like the circus.   At most places they come to town once a year.  Miss them then and you will not see them.  Run them eight times like we do the CRA shows and the crowds would be cut in half as there would be no urgency to see them.

In the same light, The PAS had to create a demand.  A few seasons ago we went from about 21 CRA dates a year to about eight.  As a fan of the sport, I hate it in one light as I do not get to see them race as much.  On a business side, the crowds have grown since then and the car counts have been better as well.  There is a bigger demand to see the races as you do not have as many chances and teams do not incur double the money to keep a car on the track.

Another analogy would be going to a Angels game.  Go to see the Oakland A’s play and there are usually plenty of tickets.  Go to see the Yankees and you had better have your tickets in advance.  The Outlawes are the “Yankees of Sprint Car Racing.”

CRA has a great PR guy in Lance Jennings and USAC’s Dick Jordan also chips in.  Like Lance and Dick with USAC, the World of Outlaws organization has a great PR staff.  Unlike CRA, most of WoO the WoO teams do PR to promote themselves.  That is a huge amount of extra press that goes out and it also draws extra fans in.  That is a huge difference from CRA.  This may piss a lot of people off, but I have worked with or dealt with a lot of top racers in upper echelon series  in racing over the years and by far the worst self promoting racers I have ever been around are the drivers in CRA (this includes the days of SCRA and the original CRA).  There are some exceptions to that - Moose Racing, Greg Alexander, John Springstead Motorsports, Johnny Bluntach, Brody Roa and Josh Ford Motorsports - but you never hear a peep from most of the others.  It would help them immensely in securing sponsorships and gaining more exposure for themselves and also the series.

HEY ROB. ,,,,,,,, Has anything changed from last year, or the same old bull shit

Too me it's the same old stuff, leaders coming from inverted positions, last week Austin one of the fastest on the track charging through the field until bending a jacbs ladder, Demon and Spencer blasting into the turns refusing to obey the rules of gravity, Matt Mitchel trying every part of the race track at full throttle, Nic Faas doing battle with a set up that didn't come his way, Gaunt and Kruseman (winners/champions with no need to prove their talent) screaming down the back stretch like they were going to make the track 100 feet longer and listening to someone's engine (I think either Ronnie Gardner or Brody Roa-both former winners) revving so high the push rods were swapping holes. I'll skip the heat races, it's too dull to mention, I hate it when guys win their first ever heat race etc.)  Just by the way, there wasn't anybody complaining about injectors not dumping enough fuel into their fire breathing time bombs at wide open throttle...and to anyone that didn't make it out, whew, you might have saved your self from a heart attack if you were 'sleeping' in turn 4. Think I'll take in another concert like the Eagles recently, only 30 bucks to park, $10.00 beers, and $400.00 tickets for a 2 hour show while they played all their latest hits, now that's what I'm talking about...more bang for your buck, I even heard one song that hasn't been played on the oldies station in over 2 weeks.   (at $10.00 a beer, I stayed thirsty my friend)

CHRIS. ,,,,, what I want to find out from rob. ,,,,,, are thay still stretching the show out to 11;00 - 11;15 ,  ,,,, When the show should be over buy 10;00 pm . ,,, I do not like those late nights. ,,,,, Ya' once in a while its ok,,,,, shit happens  ,,,,,, but when the track takes long breaks ,,,,, and a dance contest. ,,,,music and talk. ,,,, The show could be over buy 10;00 pm easily. ,,,,,,, The track just needs to make better time of there time. ,,,, just like the Eagles ' GQQD tight show and over in 2 hrs.  . ,,,,, ZZ

For me anyway I'd feel ripped off if it was only a two hour show, no matter what time it ended... No music, no talk? How damn old are you anyway?

Good stuff Chris!  My sentiments exactly.

Hats of to Coach and the team for the great track and for keeping the program rolling.  It was a sunny day and a very windy night...the recipe for disaster. We could have had way more dust and ruts had things been done differently.  Yeah, Eckert called it right with the rubber, but hey...it was fast and safe.  Can't ask for much more than that.  I am one of those weird fans that actually get something out of watching 16 of the fastest sprint car drivers in the world driving their cars in a line...because quite honestly there aren't too many others out there that could make their car stay in that same groove, going that fast, keeping that much momentum, for 30 laps!  Lance would have the data to correct me, but I'm pretty sure the lead was swapped more in the WoO main than in the USAC-CRA feature.  With conditions the way they were, that is saying a lot.  So cool to see Sweet and Kaeding taking those chances and setting up those passes!

I had a great time.

Ohhhh that's good Chris you got me laughing. We'll done PAS I enjoyed myself. And I was in turn 4 but far from being asleep. I was busy seeing how much deeper Demon would dive into turn 3 each time around. Geez they were getting after it.

Well said Doug!  I love both forms of sprint car racing - each has it's own disciplines and challenges.  If the Outlaws had 6-8 more cars (where a last chance race still wouldn't be necessary),  there would have been more traffic and the race up front may have been a little tighter.  It seemed once Saldana caught K. Kinser at the end of the field (and KK wasn't exactly slow) he didn't really push the issue to put a lap on him.  By the time Pittman caught up it was a little too late.  If it had been a 35 lap race it could have been interesting.

I thought the USAC race was good - more scrambling from about 4th on back for sure.  Again, once the yellow came out and there was a clear track Damion couldn't be caught.

Officially, at the line, the Outlaws had one more lead change I believe, but Gardner and Spencer swapped at least once or twice before the line for a few laps before the yellows which wouldn't show in the stats for the race.

Like I said earlier, over all I had a great time.  Yes, the main events could have been better but they were still good.  The Outlaws may have been short on cars, but they made up for in talent. Like you (Doug), I enjoy just watching those guys get around the track so consistently, so I appreciate what they can do night in and night out track after track.

You might miss what most of us find at the track, life long and new friends who we don't mind spending some time with. The drive is just part of the price you're willing to pay, or not. Till this year, now that their having some USAC Southwest races up my way, my drive home was about 90 miles and 6000 ft up the hill from the closest sanctioned Sprint car race... Of course it's not LA and not much traffic, but still.... Of course I get there hours before the race starts and I'm not of sound mind, so take this as you will.

Kenny...

Of course you're not of sound mind...you drive insane miles to go watch sprint cars!  Haha.  Seriously man, there aren't many that are as diehard a fan as you.  We need to listen to those that live and breathe sprint car racing.  You are the life blood of the sport.  I think of myself as a hardcore fan until I talk to you, Bob & Mike Jones, the Turn 4 Gang, etc. and hear the stories of the mileage you guys endure for the sport.

Keep on rockin' my friend!

KENNY,  You know your wright. ,,,, 5 years ago I would be at the PAS before the pit gate would open. ,, and be there for the whole show, then drive home,,,,, good thoughts all the way home. But that was 5 years ago,, Iam only 63 and I now have a lot of medical problems that has really taken me down in the past 5 years. ,, I really dont like talking about my problems, I just try to deal with them and get through with them. ,,Iam on Dialysis 4 days a week including sat mornings . and at times it just sucks the life out of me. .... plus Iam Diabetic and I have Newropathy in my feet. About 60 percent of the feeling is gone, ... And now the Diabets is starting to effect my eyes, ... Up intil last year Ziggy and I would drive up together to the PAS,,, taking turns driving. ,,,, Ziggy has moved back to Kannas to be with family,,, and that leaves me to drive alone. ,, At times thats ok. ,,, But the shows getting over so late I have a hard time driving home. ,, short drives at night sometimes its ok. ,, But not a 100 miles. ,,, So I guess what Iam trying to say is .,,,, I guess its time for me to start backin down. ,,, Witch really sucks giving up something you really love and treasure as much as i love sprint car racing. ,,, Over the past few years it has so frustrating ??spel ck with all the Meds that they have me on. ,,, JUST SUCKS.   BOTTOM LINE,,,, its not far for  you guys ans girls to have to listen to  me romp on About the PAS.  ,,,,, I'am sorry for anything that I my have said in the past that affended any one. ,,,,,   Turn 4 rob ,,,, I'am gonna miss ya buddy  . ,,, take care ! ,,,, ZZ

i respect your opinion john and im sorry for being that hard on you . my dad had the same medical conditions as you so i have a little understanding of what you go thru . if it makes you feel any better venting here , have at it . i do what ever i can to keep cars at the track , our team works really hard , just like all of them do . i work with usac-cra cars , seniors , and young guns . i have never been home before 2 am after a pas race , its a small price to pay . driving home from ventura or santa maria after a race is hell ! but we do it because we love it . last time we went to watsonville the show was over at 9:45 pm and 4 classes ran that night . so i know whats possible but i dont complain about it . i loved the scra days when we only shared the track with another class once or twice a season . the only way we can change things is to be proactive in our quests and offer solutions for the problem . and even with that there is no guarentee anyone will be receptive . jim busby once told me " you have to keep throwing shit aginst the wall until something sticks " .

@bentaxle - you mention one key point , HYPE & REPUTATION, great thinking !

@ ScottD - Your Circus comment is part & parcel to the Hype so I think your on track there & this really needs to be implemented out here , USAC/CRA has some great peeps in it , could they use some tuning in their approach , maybe ?

Bottom line do you think the direction of USAC/CRA is fine the way it is ?

Or would laying everything up on the table , in a no holes barred, we don't back up, don't back down to nobody style be a better approach to Open Wheel Racing on the West Coast ?

Dodgers/Angels play 81 + games a year in one park & draw big crowds every game when their winning , Hype & Bandwagon go hand in hand , could be once a year (Concert) or many times per year (Baseball/Hockey/Basketball)

BTW , I have a Phd in pissing people off LOLLL !!!! , & while it may not be the best approach all the time , sometimes it is necessary to get things moving in the right direction ! so on this forum , let er rip Scott

The above Comments are satire & for entertainment

Lots of funny (and true) comments here, but I do agree with N2T on this point, "anyone that has a long drive home from the PAS, the show gets over too late".......if you want the grandstands full, you must draw from all over the Southland. If you want butts in the seats, families, old people, even young people, you can't send them packing at 11:00 pm, they won't come back but once or twice a year. For most of us, it's a two hour plus journey home. Management needs to hear this.
