I think it needs to be with how many different cars and races a person has participated in and how well they did.
Midgets, Sprints, NASCAR, etc....

The main problem with that rational is that you are then putting every full-time WoO driver at the bottom of the pile automatically because with there schedule and contract they pretty much only run Outlaw shows.

My vote would have to go to Larson, but Swindell is a valid argument, simply because he put up the numbers he did in his mid 50's.

If anyone has statistics on Hodnett I would like to see them. I believe he had 16 wins. What about top 5's, 10's, etc. Maybe he is one to consider.
For driver of the "year" I think it should be for each class...winged, non-wing, etc.

My vote Bill Balog. Won 18 races onto his fifth consecutive champion ship.
Dirt is for racing, asphalt is for the parking lot.

Slink 51 I'm with you before the STN and flip flop 50 I figured up his average finish was like 2.8 with 20 wins or 21 if you count the 1 he was cheated out of.

I don't necessarily disagree with you on the Larson points, I think his accomplishments speak for themselves and I would probably vote for him as the all around open wheel driver of the year as well. I did want to clarify though that Sammy led in wins with 2 more than Donny and a lot of quick times but Donny had the most top 5s and top 10s, If Sammy had led all of those categories he would of been the point champion. Point championships are won by consistency and I am impressed this year with the 15 team cause they did not come out of the gate good, I actually can't believe they pulled it together the way they did to win another.

LOL.
i was pretty much being sarcastic regarding sammy. thanks for posting his stats.
as far as an all around driver goes, it is hard to argue with what larson has done. i don't care if it was someone else. if they did the same thing, i would be saying the same thing.
and you could say someone who ran larson's schedule was running pretty much the consummate outlaw schedule.
i would agree if you took each of the categories of cars that larson competed in, you most likely could not call him driver of the year in those separately, except of course for the K&N series.
but the combined results obtained in the diversity of equipment and owners and across different series speaks for itself. you see people having success, some for multiple seasons at times in their specific classification of car in this sport. you just don't see many drivers do what he has done, and do it two years in a row across the range of cars he has.
i really do hope we see more young guns exhibit what he has.
oh yea, i forgot.
hey larson, now that you have won your first NASCAR championship............................. go buy your mom something nice! as far as your dad goes, we know he is happy as hell no matter what. so i'm think'in you might save a few bucks there.
to indy and beyond!!

Are you serious? I live in Central PA and went to Wisconsin in August to Plymouth. He may be good there but he would get man handled anywhere in the sprint car hotbeds. He's great for IRA but he's no match for WoO or the PA Posse. Actually I think he made a trip to run with the posse last year.
