Just talked to a buddy of mine who took his 10 year old boy in the pits to meet Sammy at I96 before hot laps and they asked Sammy if his boy could a picture taken with him and Sammy said no problem, autographed his picture and conversed with them as well. So it just depends on how you approach and when.He said Sammy did have his Big game face on but he treated them just fine!

I can also say I had a bad experience talking to Schatz as well. About 6 years ago I went to a WoO race in Las Vegas and asked if he could sign my program and he just said "I guess so" and was really rude about it so I said "nevermind" and then I walked off. I am not a fan of his and anyone else who is rude to me. I am a huge supporter of sprint car racing and if someone is rude I just don't have the time to talk to them and would much rather spend time with the racers we support and are nice to talk to! I support the KWS and Civil War here in California and most of our racers are really easy to talk to but some unfortunately aren't very friendly in the pits or just don't take the time to talk to their fans. If a driver has a bad night I think it is better if they go and hide somewhere rather than being in a bad mood and being rude to his/her fans especially a child!

Looking forward to the new Golden State King of the
West series schedule!

My oldest has been a Schatz fan since he started going to the races, he is now 13. Every time we get something signed Schatz has been a tool. The wife and I always walk from his pits telling each other what a jackass. I laugh at the excuses of he is shy, doesn't like to talk or whatever. How hard is it to say thanks kid and give them a fist bump.

Well I've been a long time lurker but never posted until now. I've seen a few threads before on this but never witnessed it until this weekend. I've been going to races for 20+ years and and am starting to get my son interested in going. We were at I-96 this past weekend as we only see the Outlaws up here 1 time a year but try to get out of state as much as possible to watch them run. My son wanted a Schatz shirt so I got him one and he wondered about having it signed so I told him after the race we would take it to him. After the race we went down to His hauler and waited for Schatz to appear and my wife took him by where he was standing and asked him if he would sign our sons shirt. Well he signed the shirt without acknowledging my son or wife then just walked away. Now keep in mind this was after the race as I explained to my son that this is a job for these guys and we didn't want to bother them before the race. So this was after the race Donny was out of his fire suit and out of his hauler. To me that's just a guy being a jerk. Not to many things are worse than when you get to see that look of disappointment on a kids face when they wanna meet there hero and they turn out to be a jerk.

On Wednesday last year at the Knoxville Nationals in the old supermarket parking lot where some of the haulers park, I went over to Donny's car to see if I could find my name on it. While I was looking for my name, I saw Donny sitting on his pit cart which was parked right in front of his car.

I found my name, took a picture of it. After I took the picture, I walked over to Donny and thanked him for putting my name on his car. He looked me straight in the eye and said, "No, thank you for entering the contest." He then asked me if I wanted him to take my picture of me pointing to the name on his car.

I thought that was above and beyond what he "could have" done.

What did it get me? My name in the winner's circle of the 51st Knoxville Nationals and my name on display in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame for an entire year.

Do people go to NFL games to meet Peyton Manning? Do people go to Laker games to meet Kobe Bryant? Do you get a lot of face time with Jeff Gordon before or after races on race day? Undoubtedly you spent an hour with Dario before he earned #3, right? Why do so many sprint car fans go to the races solely for the post-race meeting with a driver after they've just worked their butt off for hours??????? If that isn't why they went... what are we whining about? Boo hoo... life didn't go your way and your heroes aren't perfect. NO KIDDING? Donny isn't perfectly charming after working his tail off? I'm shocked. Amazing. Next thing they'll be saying water is wet or something else totally crazy. Yes, quite a few drivers could use a little more congeniality but they're racing for their on-track skills more than their off-track skills. Our world is different today... the pits aren't what they were when I was growing up. The cool drivers are outnumbered by the ones that aren't IMO. Who cares... I love what they do on the track. If internet whiners would try that attitude a little more often maybe it would be a little better place that we live in with more folks in the sprint car fans in the stands.

One of the reasons I love sprint car racing is because you can meet the drivers/players unlike Nascar, NFL, NBA, MLB, and all the rest! If their were no fans there would be no racing and I think some rude racers need to member that! A good example that I can think of is of a Nascar race that was rained out until Monday but most of the fans had to leave by Sunday. The race was ran basically with no one in the grandstands and still the drivers made lots of money because of all the sponsership!!! Can you imagine a sprint car race with no one in the stands? The promoter would pull the plug before the first lap!

This is a great post. You sound like the one that writes Sammy's interview material after he wrecks two cars and has no remorse and blames everyone else for his mistakes If he was half the man you say he is then he would admit when he's wrong. Some people say its just Sammy being Sammy. It stopped being cool a while ago. Now it's just sad.

One night a few years ago I had the opportunity to get my picture with Donny, along with a hat autographed. He had absolutely no problem with it, and was quite kind about it. Quiet yes, but you could tell that he didn't mind. A year before that, I was buying a Terry McCarl shirt, and HE started a conversation with me. Really cool guy too - needless to say, I AM a T-Mac fan for life because of that moment.

I too made the trek to I-96, and guess what, it started raining right after the feature. The pits are complete garbage and the last time they were there they had to drag about 1/3 of the haulers out of the pits. The race was delayed by rain, ran late and then they have to pack up and head to wherever. Yes, it would be nice if they would take the time to make everyone happy...but let's face it, some fans have no boundaries whatsoever. I've seen fans walk right into trailers like they're part of the team. They can't get an autograph and move on, they want about 5-10 mins. to converse, and next thing you know 2 hours go by. The thing about I-96 I thought was most interesting was Johnny Gibson announcing Craig Dollansky cleared the scales...when he had not even made it to the scales! Someone got their wires crossed.

Completely and totally apples and oranges. You can't compare multi-billion dollar sports and worldwide superstar multi-million dollar athletes to much more blue collar, fan dollar driven sports. These drivers are expected by the social norms, sponsors and sanctioning bodies surrounding the sport to interact with the fans. Oh and for the record, I've had several NFL jerseys at games signed before, and even landed some game worn gloves. Lets not act like players don't show any respect or gratification towards the fans in other sports, thats an unfair characterization.

McCarl is one of the best drivers with the fans. I have also had issues with trying to talk to Schatz. Needless to say I dont have a Schatz t-shirt either. Go TMAC

Every sport needs their "instigators" to keep people interested. Sammy and Schatz are both great at doing that!

Eagle Pit Shack Guy probably remembers this from 12 to 14 years ago. Sammy pulls in with his monstor motorhome with its monster "toy trailer" behind it, it was too big to fit at Eagle where the other drivers park their motorhoms, the trailer would have stuck out far into the driving lane. A security guard comes over and Sammy opens side window, the security guy says "move that thing down there (pointing down the hill--south I think it is) you can't park it here" and man oh man, Sammy went nutz. He climbed out of the home, walked up to the security guard and started screaming at him and the few words that I'll never ever forget him saying were: "I'm the person these people are here to see". Finally another security guy comes up, then another, it was a funny funny situation.

The truth was though, that big motorhome with matching trailer, probably an 18 to 20 footer, would stick way out where the motorhomes park and of course a lot of the people there were there to see Swindell. Wife and I got a good chuckle as we were parked very close to Sammy.

Watch this.

the important thing he stated is that "he came out" to the track when he was five or six and what a great impression it made on him. he has obviously forgotten that moment in time and how self esteem is so important to mentor into small children. yes he works hard, life on the road for so many years, but at least take the time to think of the future of our sport, we the fans, young or old.....

I have met Schatz once. Same thing happened to me. I tried to talk to him by saying a few things like "tough luck tonight" or "good luck the rest of the year" couldn't get a word out of him. Not even a thanks. Turn your kid intO a Darrah fan Smile he talked to me and took a photo 30 seconds after he got back to the pits on the night he won. Awesome kid.
