I don't know if you missed it, but they are bringing the Historical Big One back in 2022 for the Thursday show. It's going to pay $100k to win. Thats what I meant by 2 $100k to win shows in the same week.

I did miss that, thanks.  I noticed you referenced it but I missed the fact that it was the same week.

That said, for me personally, unless they link the races from Thursday to Saturday, and your results each time you hit the track have a direct impact on where you start Saturday, I feel Knoxville still will have the edge.

I probably would agree to that, but it's a lot closer than it used to be. A few years back, I would have said the Kings Royal was closer to being considered with the National Open and wasn't even close to Knoxville. But Knoxville has been the same purse since 2010 save for this years lap money deal, and the Royal has grown leaps and bounds in the last few years.

I absolutely agree the argument could be made based on purse and paying 2 big events.  I still have an issue with making a bigger deal out of the King's Royal win vs. the Joker's Wild or the Knight Before.  No event was more difficult to win than the other-------------why all of the prestige given to Saturday night?   I get it that the check was bigger, but one is no easier, or harder to win, than the other.  So technically, Macedo was the big winner of the week even though 2 other drivers got the big crowns and the big checks.  After all, he won 2 of the 4 events against the same exact cars and all teams got ot hit the reset button each event.  ???   However, one could make the argument that the event itself is the premier payout event I guess because of the 2 big payouts?  I just don't consider it THE premier event in terms of driver/team accomplishment.  The Knoxville Nationals, National Open, and Jackson Nationals come in ahead of this one in those terms.  (also last year's One and Only)

All of that said, congrats to Tyler and Kyle for picking up one of the crown jewel events.  Hoping to see Kyle win in Knoxville in 3-1/2 weeks!

Apart from the numbers on 2 checks, Carson Misquito is by FAR the big winner last weekend.  W wins at an iconic track, experience, points and bigger steps toward the point championship than any other driver.

And when he didnt win he still earned more money than that position pays at a regular woo show.

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

No, not until they start drawing 100 cars like the Knoxville Nationals. It's easily the 2nd biggest event though, but it already was that before they upped the purse. I do prefer the racing at Eldora over Knoxville however.

I agree with the first sentence, but not the last.....

The kings royal is essentially a winner take all event.  The nationals overall has a much better and deeper purse.  The nationals is definitely the premier event.  I personally find it lame to pay $175k to win and $20k for 2nd place for something that's supposed to be a crown jewel.

Very good point!

You could make that argument about ANY Big$$$ event.... only difference being that Big $$$ attracts bigger car count

The Nationals.

The qualifying point system used at Knoxville is fantastic in my humble opinion. Drivers have to be elbows up on the wheel everytime that car hits the track. There is no sandbagging if you want to first, make the Saturday show and second, earn a decent starting spot. A bad qualifying effort or a bad heat race/feature and get stuck in the C or worse. Obviously Saturday night is a great show but I absolutely love the qualifying nights almost as much.

The atmosphere of an entire town getting behind thier event is pretty tough to beat as well. I just wish they'd bring back the tractor shuttles to and from the campgrounds...

Agreed on all points. Qualifying nites build up to more excitement Saturday, especially with semi "new" Friday format (how many years old?... haven't been in a few years)

Plus LOTS more to do in Knoxville during the day. The high point of my non racing activities at my one visit to Eldora (4 Crown) was the National Bicycle Museum in New Bremen..... which was AWESOME... go if you can, all sorts of wild bike designs before 1890s, when modern "safety bike" became standard.  Plus there were lots of small shops doing their own designs back then, much like hot rod, engine & race car builders back in the day (Speedy Bill Museum!)

But I digress.... wink

The non-wang crowd would kill to have an argument like this. They have problems establishing one single major event, and no I don't count that little smack down thing at Kokomo as more than just a blip on the radar.  The corn cob nationals will more than likely fizzle out after another year or 2.

If it ain't got a wing it don't mean a thing.

I think Knoxville is still the premiere event because of the format. You have to do well on qualifying night and nothing is more exciting than the heat races on Wednesday and Thursday. Knoxville has good paying features through the field throughout the week and they get cars from everywhere.

Kings Royal is a solid second place to me. It's an awesome race at a great track. They are both a must watch.

Guarantee I know what Karl Kinser's answer would be. Money talks.

Eldora if it is going to pay $100,000 for Big One next year plus $175,000 for Kings Royal.

Kendra Jacobs and Knoxville better start paying $100,000 on Friday night to keep up.

Hats off to Stewart for paying so much.

First went to the Knoxville Nationals in 1972.  800+ miles from my then home, one way.  Have gone to a total of 20 Nationals, including a run of ten years in a row.  Have gone to Eldora, 300 miles from my then home numerous times including the MOPAR MILLION.  Even went to one of the Eldora 500's.  And got to see the beginnings of the Eldora Mile.  Never went to an Historical Big One nor a King's Royal. Not really a fan of all the money on top.  Just put me down as Knoxville and too old to switch.

Personally I don't think it is now but it could be in the next 10-20 years.  Never been to Eldora but I agree it's about the format that makes Knoxville so great.  Great vacation but in my old age it's too many people for me.  But anyway with Tony Stewart calling the shots, there's no saying what could happen with the Kings Royal.  He's certainly not afraid to think outside the box and he's a rich guy with connections everywhere in the racing world.  Personally I couldn't care less how much any race pays because it doesn't affect me other than ticket prices going up but as for drivers and teams money talks.  The better it pays deeper in the field the more people will show up.  I'll bet if he did something like 25 grand to start the A feature just about every 410 sprint car in the country would be there.  If he were to have 200 cars show up consistently then eventually I think it would surpass the Knoxville nationals.  Add in if he could televise all the nights on a major network, I think it could be huge.  Not saying those are his plans just saying those are a couple things he could do to elevate this event.

The success of the double Kings Royal & the addition of the Historical Big One to next year's week makes me think that this is now the premier sprint car event in the country.  Any thoughts?

The easiest answer I can think of as to how nothing will ever compare to the Knoxville Nationals-People have up rooted their teams and families to race at Knoxville weekly. And mainly just to work towards a better chance to win the Nationals.

You have a right to your opinion, but lots of us prefer wingless, even guys from Wing hotbeds like Pa.

Ever see a race at an Indiana bullring? They're GREAT! Smile More passing, usually....

Look at the entire purse. Knoxville pays 75,000 for 2nd vs. 20,000 for Kings Royal. 6th place is 20,000 at Knoxville and it's 10G just to start the A main. The entire purse is over 1 million. Eldora is very top heavy. I do agree that it would be good if Knoxville started paying a little more for Wed-Fri features and I bet you will see that in the near future. They raise the purse a little every year at the Nationals. Still prefer the racing at Eldora though - races like a bullring on steroids instead of just trying to keep your car perfectly straight.

"It's a good feeder series for winged sprints once they get good enough and want to make some actual money." ....Thats the whole problem, USAC doesn't pay enough. The racing is more entertaining, IMHO. If more people attended, they could pay more.... vicious circle
