A majority of the announcers around the sprint car world are good. Johnny, Blake, and Tony B are the 3 I enjoy the most. I'm not a big stats guy but some of the stats that they call out are pretty interesting as well as some of the historical information about the drivers, venue, and sport in general is great to hear. I've grown to appreciate the announcing even more watching dirtvision or highlight videos in general with some of the information provided. When I'm actually at the race when the cars are racing I can't really hear too many announcers except for one here in my area whom I find annoying because he screams into the mic, but you will always have one that doesn't suit your tastes.
I don't mind music prior to hot laps, or the heat race as the cars are pacing around the track. I think that might be just growing up playing sports and used to hearing music during any type of stoppage of play so I am kind of use to it. The sponsor reads and advertisements don't bother me either as I know they are required to read those and plus if a company is willing to sponsor the sport with the ask of having their name read 30-50times a night then I guess I can tolerate it.

Stop being such a pansy. The guy sucks. Period. He has a terrible voice and stumbles over his sentences all night long. Those are facts. Why cover up the truth just to be nice? That's what's pussies do. And it's why this world is turning into shit right in front of our eyes.

Good post. This is almost 100% my sentiments on the situation.

The guy at Port Royal needs to go. Let's stop being soft pussies and cut the dude loose. No I can't do any better, that's why I keep my ass out of the booth. That's why he needs to keep his ass outta the booth. It's unanimous, nobody likes the guy,, I'm sure the staff Port also sees that he is terrible at announcing. How could they not. I really have no idea why he still has that job. Im sure he's a great guy and good human being, but has no business doing play by play.. I'm also sure a moderator will see this and delete this comment for being too mean. Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings. Smh.

Agree 100%. Probably is the worst I have ever heard. Port Royal has not had a good announcer since Tom Baker and that was a long time ago.

Another vote for Port Royal's announcer being absolutely awful and unbearable.

My fave is Hare. That guy has a voice for radio and announcing. He's entertaining with his nicknames too. IMO you can't be a great announcer if you don't have a great voice for it. I appreciate all announcers that are knowledgeable and do their homework - like knowing a little about each driver and how to pronounce their name and hometown at the very least.

Hare is hands down the best in Central PA IMO. Smooth voice with an equally smooth delivery and puts in the effort to familiarize himself with the cars he is announcing. Can't ask for much more. I only wish we got to hear him more. Since he is the announcer at Baps and they only have a handful of 410 shows we just don't get to hear him enough.

I'm with you on Tony B at Knoxville. I also really liked Calvin Jones, who was Devils Bowl's announcer back in the day. I think he was Lanny Edwards' son-in-law if I remember right. They brought him back briefly a couple of years ago. At the Nationals, I've also like Wade Aunger (spelling?) and his pit announcing. Pretty humorous during some of the down time.
|
Love Wade as well! He's a great touch at nationals and a passionate fan. I like Gibson to. Knowledgable, passionate, and as far as this guy can remember just the voice of the outlaws. They just go together. I might disagree with his political opinions and such but make no mistake the guy is excellent at his job and that's what I'm at the races for! Blake was missed when he left Knoxville. He does a fine job. I don't have much bad to say about anyone. It's usually a thankless job where the good ones go unnoticed and the mediocre to bad ones get raked over the coals.
On a local level Tony Paris was always great! Doesn't announce much or at all anymore but he might be one of the funniest guys to hold the mic. If anyone has listen to Paris call a race they know what I'm talking about.

Well, this turned into quite the monkey shit flinging contest. I don't have much of a negative opinion on too many of the announcers out there, other than it's hard to listen to a race at the Grove. I'm young, so I don't have that nostalgia for Bruce Ellis. Love the atmosphere for the commentating team at the Knoxville Nationals (boy did Tony give me a heart attack during 2016 when he exclaimed "They get together going into Turn 1" as I was listening to the audio broadcast because I was just a broke 21 year old.) I'm not the biggest fan of Blake Anderson, but he definitely does his job well (besides playing Space Jam as cars are rolling for the feature, the worst hype song.)

Chet says last night before hotlaps began...Ryan Smith has quick time so far at a minute & 7 seconds...
thought Earl's mic problems were on purpose.

The first time I heard Space Jam played at the track I was like, "Whaat? This is from so far out in left field". It was completely whimsical and random...... and to tell to you the truth, I liked that.

I haven't heard anything about Mr. Gibson's political views. As long as he leaves that out of his announcing, then I really wouldn't care either way.

i don't understand the hate for earl at port royal. i'm not a huge fan of his tag line at the start of features...but i don't tend to like those from anybody. he seems like a great ambassador for the sport in our area with the beerhill gang facebook live programs. he doesn't miss the important things going on at the track. i've heard other announcers fail to realize the leader has crashed or had a problem this year. there was a pause for about 15 seconds without any sort of additional exciement when they were clued in on what was happening. somebody the other night totally missed that lance dewease pulled in during his heat race from a transfer spot. i won't mention names because i'm not into bashing track announcers. it's a job everybody things they can do...but they would be just as bad or worse.

My thought on these recent posts about announcers is that in the past before televised races they were chosen for their ability to whip up a live crowd. Now we're hearing that same over the top style on TV and in some cases it comes across like we're watching some kind of wrestling cage match. That over the top style that can whip up a crowd live gets muted more often than not.
Personally I was always pit side when I was chasing races and couldn't hear them from my vantage point. Now I'm noticing how annoying some can be. I like announcers that rattle off sponsors and give interesting information about the drivers. I don't care for the ones who try to come up with witty jokes or scream all night. The mute button and volume control keeps it from driving me crazy listening to them when they're like that.

Heard Jack Miller do an Outlaws show at West Plains. He worked outside the booth and shot the shit with fans during breaks.

+1 could not agree more. I'm bummed when we visit Bap's becuase he doesn't announce our class since we have our own announcer.
