Just stop. Stan seems like a cool guy and I enjoy his contributions to the board. You on the other hand...

Looking around at the status of all kinds of events I'm seeing the NHL and MLB playing in empty stadiums.  The Back to the 50's car show that draws upwards of 10,000 Street Rods cancelled.  The Viking announced today that they will begin their season without fans.  Conventions and Trade Shows along with events like Home & Garden shows are cancelled.  My son-in-law's band usually is playing the metal concert circuit this time of year but all the concerts are shut down.  There are no plays, operas, musicals or anything like that happening this year.  Our state Fair would normally be happening right now but that was shut down as well.

But I'm the odd one for taking a cautious approach after an outbreak among drivers, crewmen, fans and track workers at an event featuring the biggest touring dirt track series in all of racing?  If the industry leaders can't escape being touched by this how can I be confident that I would be safe at a local race that doesn't have the resources of a WoO series?

There is literally no other public event that I could attend except a dirt track race where it's pretty much business as usual.  What the hell am I supposed to think when I see that.  The mixed message does not instill confidence.  I'd rather error on the side of caution and pick up where I left off when it has passed.  The assumption is that anyone taking that approach is politically motivated.  I am motivated to cover my own ass because politicians don't know what they are talking about.  If that makes me the enemy among some racing fans so be it.

You did NOTHING wrong whatsoever.  Thank you for caring about yourself and the people who surround you.

Also, thanks for your great coverage of racing over the years.

Thanks for the positive feedback and compliment on my past work.  That seems like two lifetimes ago.  I went from hero to zero pretty fast on here.  wink

Let me guess : anti science, anti vacser,  xenophobic, creationist, warped understanding of citizen responsibility, sense of being deprived, would not know individual freedom if it hit you in the ass.

Sounds like it, another low IQ Trump bootlicker. Probably has one of those big Trump flags next to his confederate flag on his front porch.

LasoskiFan, thanks for sharing the post by Vande07 from the other website.   Very interesting and informative.   There used to be a Vande77 that posted on here quite regularly, but I haven't seen him post in a long time.   I'm pretty sure it's gotta be the same guy.

I don't think he posts a lot on 4m.net either.  However, when he does, his posts are as you stated above (interesting and informative).  Forums like these, need more posters like Vande07.

Back on Topic.

As a local (I live in Knoxville), I can tell you that there are people sick in town, some related to working at the track, others not.

IMO, the outbreak at the track falls squarely on the World of Outlaws. They RENTED the track so they could hold the One and Only event, and then oversold tickets (was supposed to be limited to 3500 on frontstretch (that seats around 13000 or so and 2500 backstretch (that seats 7000), the math for the backstretch made zero sense to get to that #.

When people arrived, if they had kids under 12, they got a FREE Ticket for their kids in the same grandstand as them (this is where the big issue happened, 3500 total should have been 3500, not 3500 and another 400-1000 kids). Same thing on the backstretch. This made social distancing very difficult, even though they blocked off all odd #'d rows and announced endlessly about leaving 3 seats between you and the group next to you.

Secondly, a driver (if you have Twitter, you know which one), admitted he was sick upon arrival, yet the Outlaws did no testing (not even temperature checks) so he raced sick which he shouldn't have been allowed to do, and it broke the protocols that the Outlaws supposedly were following. The other teams that that driver travels with also ended up having positives in their camps.

Fans had to police other fans to keep 3 seats between your group and the group next to you. Since the Outlaws sold all tickets and did everything as GA, fans were showing up at 8:00 PM after time trials and wanted to sit in row 30 and squeezed in in seats that shouldn't have been used because they didn't want to go early like those sitting in those seats did.

Unfortunately, the racetrack took all the blame in the local television media and here we are 2 weeks later and the Outlaws are still not acknowledging their part in it.

This put the Fairboard and track in a tight spot IMO, and there is no answer that makes everyone happy.
Do you continue to race and have the same thing in Mid-September with the Late Models?
Do you cancel and make people mad?
Do you not cancel and have more restrictions put on your business by the state or require fans to wear masks (and take their ire on social media) and then make them more mad when you have security telling people to put their mask on or they will have to leave the property?

IMO, it SUCKS as a race fan that they canceled. As a resident, they likely did the right thing given the current positivity rate in our County (14.9% as of 8/24/20) which consists of Knoxville, Pella, Pleasantville, Melcher-Dallas and Bussey (roughly 20,000 people).

From the rumors I heard during the One and Only event, Dingus got a warning from the state on Thursday about enforcing social distancing inside the bar/fences / On Friday they got fined and warned that if they couldn't enforce it that the state would be pulling their license for a period of one year, effectively putting them out of business.

This puts AJ in a tight spot as well as the State says he can have 100% capacity, but it's up to him to enforce social distancing (not sure how you do that with drunk people).

As far as one of the earlier posts saying the City Council was meeting about it, not true. The City has ZERO jurisdiction on the Fairgrounds even though it is inside the city limits. The Marion County Board of Supervisors has some control, but not much as they have leased the property to the Marion County Fair Association.

I have seen similar posts on facebook groups as well (not sure if it is the same person) but everything he says here I can verify. I took my son but did not need to purchase a ticket for him however, when I child did enter the gate one of the ticket people did put the equivalent of a 50/50 ticket in a bucket. What that was supposed to do is anyones guess, maybe they would use that to report the offical number to some agency? The fans getting in after 8pm and trying to squeeze into the top rows is true as we moved a couple times on Friday when the haulers were in the infield. Tony & Johnny made repeated requests all 3 days kindly asking people to stay 3seats between other parties. One day Tony even pointed out 1 row right across from us that had a person in every seat that they may want to spread out just to help. They responded by laughing and holding up their beers. For us, we just simply moved whenever it got too crowded. On Friday we were able to move to the backstretch thankfully after moving twice on the front but Saturday when I asked the ticket person if I could move they said no unfortunately the event is sold out.

I do slightly disagree with him stating that it rests squarly on the Outlaws or any one intity as a scapegoat. To me you either blame no one and call it life or you can spread the blame out (maybe not equal). Their were Knoxville track officals as well as Sheriff's deputies on the grounds all day long each day their. You had people before noon sitting down at the opening gate standing shoulder to shoulder to mark their seats when the gates opened and you had several WRG, Knoxville, and Sheriff's walking by the line multiple times not saying anything. We went to the Hyvee multiple times a day and wore masks but a good majority of people in the store were not so I cannot put that on the Outlaws. First couple of nights at Dingus people were shoulder to shoulder as well passed by but I think that would have been the case had their been 1000-2000 tickets sold.

This is kind of the perfect storm as to why I can see why guys like StanM do not want to attend races. Out of 7500 people, plus kids, plus drivers, crewmembers, on top of the townspeople already living there. I can see from the track and cities perspective that the race in August is a boom to the local economy and going a year without it could really strain a few businesses and probably the track. I can see why a driver who may not be feeling the best but does not really feel like death may want to race in what is the biggest paying event of the year so far because if he doesn't he may not get paid. All of us have more than likely gone into work when we are not feeling the best either because we do not want to take time off, won't get paid, or deal with the B.S when we get back but that is how things get spread unfortunately. Every single one us has had this sequence of events happen to them, go to work co worker is coughing & sneezing so you try to keep your distance they do too, they start feeling better as the week goes on. The following week you go into work coughing & sneezing felling terrible describe your symptoms and they go, "man sounds like you got what I had." Yeah no sh!t but you really aren't any better because now the next person that gets sick is probably from you.

Do you attend the Old Threshers reunion in Mt. Pleasant?  My grandfather has his old 1918 tractor in the museum out there.  Smile

Yes we try to hit it when we can. My Great Grandparents owned a house and a lot of the land that Old Threashers is held upon. Their old house is actually still preserved within a large pole building in the Village area. Old Threashers is a good way to spend a day or two during Labor Day Weekend.

I would suggest that you are not the one who needs to take a break.

I, and many others, enjoy/appreciate your thoughts and insights.

Kind of Funny, Mothers side has that Historical House in Mt.Pleasant, And on my Dads side my Great Grandfolks have their old house as a Historical visiting area by Warsaw Mo. up atop the Bluff on Truman Lake, Called "The Hooper House".

I started watching the races sixty years ago and there was nothing political about it.  That was the case for many decades.  I'm not much on politics and it has become impossible to post anything on here without getting attacked and having it morph into a me vs the world situation.  The assumption is that if I don't agree I automatically am a (fill in the blanks).  That gets old, I'm just in it for the racing and have been participating in this forum since 1,999 and it's predecessor message board for a year or two prior to that.  I always felt like I was among friends on here who all shared a common interest in racing and treated each other decently.  That has all changed the past few years and I'm tired of it.  I'm taking a break and hoping this whole deal blows over.

Never intended to stir up trouble, just in a different place in my life and in spite of me being middle of the road my wife is ultra liberal and is not a racing fan.  Me debating whether I should go to a race is really a moot point because anyone who lives with family members in this situation has to have their family on board with their decisions.  She looks around and sees everything shut down then I tell her that they're racing to a full house across the border in Wisconsin and she can't square the two.  Marriage is a partnership so I'm not going to force my decision to attend public events on her.  The last I saw on the news they were still telling people over 60 to avoid situations like that and until that changes I'll never convince her (or myself).

I can understand why some got irritated with me because I'm coming from a different age group and am looking at things entirely different.  Our state has been one of the ones slow to reopen so I look around and things aren't anywhere near what they are twelve miles from us in Wisconsin.  If I wasn't so close I wouldn't even consider it at all so I'm in a different place than my detractors.  I'm stepping aside for a while unless someone addresses me by name I will respond if it's not just a bunch of insults.  Anyways, I'm stepping aside and giving it a rest and I'll check back when thiings settle down and the topic returns to racing.

I've got a lot of faults and one of them is always trying to get the last word in.  I have no problem with anyone going to races and encourage them all to go so I can watch from home.  I'll be out and about going to pulic events again one of these days.  Just staying away from here for a while.

I agree with your assessments.   It is alarming how so many people want to politicize everything.  I have a mind of my own and I do not align with either party.  In fact, I try not to waste my time on political stuff.  I am a lot happier that way.

I respect and understand your decision to step away for awhile, but make sure you come back at some point.  This forum is better with you on it.

LasoskiFan, thanks for sharing the post by Vande07 from the other website.   Very interesting and informative.   There used to be a Vande77 that posted on here quite regularly, but I haven't seen him post in a long time.   I'm pretty sure it's gotta be the same guy.

I remember Vande well.  He was always the voice of reason and a Knoxville resident that could provide a lot of inside information about what was going on in KV.  I miss his posts and would like to see him come back.

Agreed, Stan should stay.

But a thought. I didn't go to Iowa this year for a couple of reasons, but mostly because of Covid. But when I saw that several got the virus, my first thought wasn't "I was right! Those idiots..."

I think you can say things too many times and sound like a broken record, and good or bad, it'll be taken the wrong way.

Stan, the clown doesn't like me either, lol.  Knows who I am, saw me lots at Knoxville but not one time did he ever have the balls to come up to me to share his dislike.  What a mistake that would have been, us old Canuck hockey players still enjoy the odd dance now and then and this would have happened, I promise you.  Notice the keyboard tough guys NEVER use their real names, lol.....

He was very anti- WoO and anti-Capitani if I remember correctly. The content of his post doesn't surprise me if that's the same guy.
