While yes the media will hype it up & continue to report on it until the next big event, I don't necessarily put the reason as to why people are talking about it on them fully. I think the past several years that has just been the easy out for some to blame it on media instead of blaming it on who it should be blamed on. Human beings, specifically uninformed human beings.

So far from what I have seen reported has been factual, however the delivery of the reporting & tone isn't one that I would use. The reaction that people who receive this news you would think we are in the movie Outbreak. If there is a disease or epidemic which this is, it should be reported, and even said that death is a possibility because it is. However, people need to realize that death is possible with the flu if not treated. Whenever things like this it's human beings that start blowing it out of proportion and instead of asking doctors or scientist, people start going on satire sites to see what some witch doctor has had to say. If you get the virus, take it seriously, keep away from others as you should with any virus, disinfect, see a doctor especially if you have issues breathing. This is stuff that you should do no matter if it's this virus or a cold

Approximately the same, 80%. The big differences though. The traditional flu generally has a vaccine whereas this at present does not.  The traditional flu would take down 80% of the elderly because they either didn't take a vaccine or had compromised immune systems. This virus is killing 80% even those that are elderly but healthy. Also due to the lack of a vaccine and how contagious the virus coupled with its ability to remain viable outside a host for a significant time (I've read it's about 9 days) is it's quite feasible this can also neutralize healthcare workers.

I don't want to be a fear monger but to take it lightly is foolish.

Getting back to the original thread could it affect Sprint car events?  Quite possibly if there has been a significant outbreak in and around that region.  Would you attend the Knoxville Nationals if say 25% of the local people in and around Knoxville come down with this?

I agree.  I am thinking best case scenario is we keep this from spreading fast----with cancellations of big events, schools, etc. and we HOPE the warmer late-spring and summer months kill it off.  Unfortunately, it has spread to the southern hemisphere which is going to be having winter soon.   This likely means another round in the fall/winter.  

I don't know how this is going to work out, but I am seriously expecting sporting events to be getting cancelled in this country very soon.  The reason we are talking about 3000 dead right now and not 100,000 dead is because China shut the country down.  If we carry on like usual, this thing will spread like wildfire.  Expect the very real possibility that some of our lives are about to be disrupted.  

They have cancelled the first 2 rounds of MotoGP (motorcy les) in Qatar and Thailand,they listed travel restrictions was the cause,.

And, let's be real here-----whether the threat is immediate or not, some of these events are going to start getting cancelled because of fear of lack of attendance.  They can't lose money just to run events.  

While I'd like to blame media hype my memories of people I've known from the WWI generation that survived the Spanish Influenza of 1918 haunt me.  A couple of them told stories about horse drawn wagons going down the main streets picking up bodies.  Those people from that age group are all gone now but they were in their 70's and 80's when I was in my 20's and 30's.

Very true Stan.  We are all spoiled brats in this country as we have not had to deal with anything like this in our lifetime.  This does not appear to be anything like that Pandemic thank God.  But, it is still MUCH deadlier than the yearly influenza.  Even if this all shakes out to a .5-1% mortality rate---which I think it will-----this is still 5 to 10 times deadlier than the worst seasonal influenza rates.  And, it will be much deadlier than any of the other Pandemics we have seen since the 1918 flu.  

If this doesn't die with humidity and warm weather, it is going to send out economy into a recession in short order----if it's not already heading there now.

Actually I believe it was the NewEngland Journal of Medicine that said it may not be any worse than the flu. Which as we know kills many people a year. Pres. Trump did not say it was a hoax. As usual the media is blowing things totally out of proportion  

That may be the case----we can all hope anyways.  All indications are it is more deadly.  However, I am sure there is some gross under-reporting of mild cases that has gone on in China and Iran.  I think what we are seeing in South Korea, Japan, and right here in the U.S. might give us a good picture of the severity.

No need to panic, but it would be stupid & irresponsible for "the authorities" (Medical Professionals!) not to take precautions. It could get worse. As somebody said, flu killed anywhere from 40 to 100 million in 1918. 1.7% of world population https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu

Gotta see what happens, I'm not overly worried yet.... went to my first sprint car race of the year at Lincoln Sunday, cool sunny day, everything groovy, nobody wearing any masks. Dylan Cisney (Port Royal regular) won his first race ever at Lincoln. Brian Monteith ran away in his heat, In the Feature passed everybody from about 6th & was running away with that too, when he spun out, did a 360, got passed by a bunch of cars but kept going, still managed to finish 3rd. That was impressive

I hope they have high visibility cones marking the area and if you leave the isolation area you are immediatly disqualified!
