How do you figure that Goodyear stole the win in 2010 from Sammy? Everyone else raced on that same tire and mostly everyone else crossed the finish line. Maybe it was the car setup, maybe over punishing the tire by driving too hard, etc, etc., but to blame Goodyear when again mostly everyone else finished the race is a pretty weak excuse. Lol

Goodyear had quite a bit of trouble all season long. As Sammy walked away from his car that night he picked up a sizeable chunk of rubber from the tire remains and it had all kinds of tread on it so it wouldn't seem to me that tire wear was the issue. It looked like the tire just let go. But know one really knows? One thing is for certain about that night (and there were others), Sammy proved he still had it behind the wheel and foot on the pedal! The majority of the fans liked him too at least for that night.

Weak excuse, lmao. No, it's a legit excuse, the friggin' tire blew while he was laying the smack down on everyone. Weak excuse, my god when will the Sammy hating trolls stop already.

Dude! You're on the wrong thread. It's the other Sammy thread where everybody gets worked up about Sammy, pro or con.
Who are some of the legends you've seen race in you're area? From your screen name, I'm going to guess Tim Shaffer?

It's pretty clear, I guess. For whatever reason, folks on here either seem to love him or hate him. There's no real reason to take up sides and go down that road for the 500th time...
Here's the thing about Sammy Swindell. If you watch him race today, you are pretty much seeing a living legend on the track in front of you. You'll be able to bore your kids and grandkids with that information. "Yep- back in '19 I saw Sammy Swindell race at such and such track. That ol' son of a gun was a real _________________ (fill in the blank to suit your own tastes.) Think about it for a minute. When Sammy does hang it up, that opportunity to see a living legend race is past for you. A sign that you are getting old perhaps?
How many other living legends have you seen race that are no longer doing so? Will you someday bore your kids and grandkids with that info? Here's my list of guys who cast long shadows that I've watched race in person over my lifetime. In no particular order:
Sammy Swindell
Steve Kinser
Doug Wolfgang
Mark Kinser
Rick Ferkel
Danny Lasoski
Jan Opperman
Stevie Smith
Keith Kauffman
Kenny Jacobs
Donny Schatz
Dave Blaney
Al UNser Jr.
Sleepy Trip
Mel Kenyon
Local legends:
Daryl Dawley
Bill Rook
John Stevenson
Terry McCarl
Don Mack
Jim "Bucking Horse" Olson
Sammy Liebig
Marty Barber
Who else have you seen race?

Hey, cool post, Murphy. I've seen a lot of the guys on your list. Trouble is, when I did I was a non-wing only snob and really didn't appreciate what I was seeing. Still, at least I can say that I saw them. Here are a few that I recall seeing. Some are local legends some are national. I'm not repeating any of those on your list. These are just the ones who I think are what you could call legends (although a few are mostly personal favorites). The list could be much larger, of course.
Billy Vukovich Jr
Bubby Jones
Dean Thompson
Jimmy Oskie
Kevin Doty
Frankie Kerr
Jac Haudenschild
A.J. Foyt
Gary Patterson
Chuck Gurney
Jimmy Sills
LeRoy Van Connett
Eddie Wirth
Ron Shuman
Lealand McSpadden
Cory Kruseman
Richard Griffin
Mike Kirby
Damion Gardner
Dave Darland
Jason Johnson

Ted Wise, Ralph Quarterson, Ed lynch, sr., Buddy Cochran, Ed Murphy. Guys that could race with anybody. All hailed from western pa area but if they pulled in somewhere they were a car that had to be beat.

once , somewhere in the 90's, he did the same thing at the Kville nats. Drove the wheels off of it , had the lead, used up the rr as a result, ended up on his side in turn 3 & blamed the rubber.
rest of the field finished the feature.
flat out overused the tire, you'ld think a guy of that caliber would be smarter than that.
always somebody elses fault when he loses.

I think you might have missed my subtle hint about this being the thread about legendary racers you've had the priviledge to see race. You can pic any of about a hundred other topics to debate the pros and cons of Sammy.
Your other thread said Smokey Snellbaker, not Stewart. Was there a Smokey Stewart racing sprint cars somewhere? Smokey is a somewhat uncommon nickname. I think every racetrack I've ever been too had a Corky at some point.

Well now I have to chime in on some local legends.
Chad Mellenbrandt in the gold 97, always a threat in the early 90s.
Rod Henderson, dude is an awesome guy. Used to do well in the old D1 Dan Dan the Sonic man car and also his own 83 ride.
John Cressman, the ultimate checkers or wreckers driver. Absolutely fearless up top but holy shit he wrecked a lot.
John "longhair" lambertz. When he first started he was pretty bad. He was always a low budget team but he got better every year. I was there for his first 410 win and the whole place went nuts.
Chad Meyer, another great guy. He won a lot at husets and was also not afraid to run anywhere.
Dusty Ballenger, I remember him winning a lot in the 360s, another guy that has won a 410 race with a 360 motor.
Gary Dewall in the Lev wings number 16. He was really fast for a few years and always had great looking cars.
I also remember Donny Schatz running Husets when he was still in high school in a black number 15 car. He was ok but I never expected him to turn out to be an all timer.
I could go on and on, wish husets was still around.
|
I forgot all about Longhair Lambertz.. He was back in the Lenord Lee era. Boy ole Lenord had a few scrapes! I'm pretty sure it was his car that the engine flew down the straight a way at Knoxville like a ping pong ball. Tony Norem, Mike Brooks and John Kearney are some of oldies I miss.
