In 1 day I have seen 3 tree hugging insults by 2 people. At least the insults are getting friendlier. I mean 15years ago when I was a teenager playing sports we used to insult people by suggesting then to perform a sexual act. If we really wanted to cross the line we would bring up their mother or possibly insult their manhood. Don't ever recall anyone using treehugging insults lol.

How would hugging a tree make someone feel better? Hugging a tree doesn't even make a tree hugger happy. If they are hugging a tree it usually means someone is trying to cut said tree down which would make a tree hugger sad.

Nah, I could care less, I just learned a lesson though.  Ohio Speedweek has lots of good cars and drivers and not so many properly prepared racetracks, c'est la vie.....If you or anyone else thinks these are well prepared, condusive to racing sprint cars, I only wish I was as blind...Enjoy......I gots to go back and hit F5 again, getting close to racing again or their version....lol...

I figured most of the negativity on here early in the season was due to the bad weather, and the fact that so many races were being cancelled. I thought, "Meh, it'll pass. People are just anxious to start the season and get out of the house. I get it."

Nope. We are now in the swing of things and people are still complaining about most everything.  The Jackson Nationals and Dirtvision's WoO coverage seem to be the two things that most everyone who posts, seem to like.

Everything else though? Damn.

"The track is too dry."

"Its a dry slick.I want to see a hammer down track."

"I want a cushion on the track."

"This race was too dusty."

"This track didn't have enough passing."

"Yeah, you have a cushion, but it's only halfway up the track."

"You modernized the track but its not to my liking."

"Why can't they just (insert rule change here), and that'll fix everything.

Why do you people pay money to go the races to be the dirt track version of Roger Ebert? Do any of you go to just watch, hang out with friends/family, and enjoy some drinks? This post is not meant to say that I've loved every race I've ever been too, (I do think Williams Grove was in need of some criticism earlier in the year) but it seems like not a race can go by, without some people jumping on here and complaining about something. Usually the tone, is one of complete dickishness too.

Dirt track fandom is full of passion. As a Philadelphia sports fan I know "passion" firsthand, but some times that passion gets misplaced and turns into cannibalistic words and actions.

Relax... and try to have a good time.

I agree with a lot of what ya said Johnny. By my choice, I admit, in 1996, job opportunities for my young family made me choose family life, mainly my wife being able to pursue a teaching career for which she had earned a degree, thus moving out of, at the time, sprint car heartland in southeastern SD. At the time I had several options for my love of sprint car racing within easy driving distance. Ironically, 3 of the tracks I frequented on a very regular basis, Lake County, I90 and of course Husets sit idle. Now, in north central SD, my options are very limited. Traveling maybe once a year for a race in ND. For a couple years the WoO raced in Huron. This weekend, however, Brown County in Aberdeen , a short 55 miles one way trip, is hosting the NOSA series and a few weeks later the Lucas Oil Series. I’m beyond giddy. Especially since the weather looks A OK for Saturday. I didn’t get to personally witness a show last year. Saturday the track could be a locked down black rubber freight train and I guarantee I will leave happy after plopping down my $15 apiece for the family, cause I get to see sprint cars live and in person again!

I had been writing this very same post in my head for a while. My thread title was "So, it's come down to this...."

I feel a big part of the blame is  what social media is turning people into- lethargic, uninvolved complainers. Note that you don't even have to go to a race anymore to be able to bitch about it. Facebook has turned every conversation about racing into an "everything sucks!!!" arguement. First you ask what the car count will be. Next you check the long range weather forcast because you just know it will be rainy, too hot, too cold or too windy. Then you stay home on race night. Afterwards, you go online to commiserate about the poor car counts and bad track conditions,  and then you ask how the crowd was.

The other thing that gets my goat is the money thing. A guy drives his $40,000 pickup to a racetrack, walks up to the gate in $200 tennis shoes and has a fit about paying more than 4 bucks for a ticket to a sprint car race. When I read someone saying the ticket price was too much so they stayed home, I wonder how much they spent the last time they took their wife or honey bunny out to eat.

I have gone to the races since I was a kid. Over 45 seasons I'd guess I've gone maybe 800-900 times. I can remember dozens of good races and hundreds of good memories, the rain-outs and dust bowls, not so much.

I can't say I disagree with anyone who's made comments here.  I see everyone's point.  But the day nobody is talking about racing means nobody cares.

When I was a kid, I didn't know any other kids who followed racing.  Any race I saw, I had to talk about with my parents.  Not that it's a horrible thing to have to talk to my parents but today there is a whole world ready to share and (kind of) listen to your racing stories.  I do agree though it seems like the unfasionable thing to do these days, is to go and enjoy any kind of event without something being wrong(It's not just dirt track racing).  But even if it's negative, people are talking which means people care.

Completely pointless thread here Utah!   Haven't you heard that sprint car racing will be nonexistent in a couple of years because of rising engine costs?   The WoO is going out of business too because they're broke on top of that.

Hah. That reminds me of something. I was watching an old video from Port Royal on YouTube the other month, it might have been the Labor Day race from 81? 82? Whatever. Anyway they were interviewing a bunch of drivers, and one of the them said something about how much money it takes to go racing 'nowadays".  I was like, "Huh, imagine that. Even before I was born people were grousing about costs in racing."

I should have it lined up right at the part I was talking about. If not, it starts at 5:45.

I agree Dryslick.  I am heading off to Farley and Beaver Dam to see the WoO this weekend.  It should be pretty nice.  I will show up at 7:00 for a front row parking spot at both places, and should be out of there in 5 minutes because there will be no traffic---you know, since no one will be there.  There likely won't be any jackasses sitting in my seats, you know, because there will be plenty of seating.  I will head to the restroom after heats and will walk right in---because no one will be there.  Same with the concessions.

Oh wait, nevermind----it is going to be packed

Great feature!

Pretty good feature, great might be a bit much.  Danny D. made a move on the first lap of the Dash that was worth half your admission, this guy goes for it all the time, he gets it, sooooo exciting.

Larson doesn't lose if he leaves the single file lapped cars and goes to the cushion for a couple of laps, surprised he didn't figure this out or maybe heis car wouldn't allow him to do that.  2 firsts, 2 seconds the last 4 nights against such a stout field is 'Well done young man, err, money'

I still think I should get 3 old friends, Gene Frankart, Tommy Helfrich and John Padjento to write a book on Track Prep, talk about a New Bible, this would be it.....

I love to complain about Eldora. Back on Trevors old Sprint Car Forum I used to complain about Eldora all the time. It was fun. The billboards, luxury suites, signage, branding, excessive rules, billboards, coke products, billboards, cooler gestapo, billboards..........  I miss those days. I hadcomplaining down to an artform.

Now people just bitch to be bitching. Anyone can bitch, but the sweet science of complaining, I had that down pat.

Now if you are old enough and had a strong enough stomach, back in the old days you went to the soft underbelly of the internet and crawled into the rectum of the legendary Central PA Board. That was the wild wild west. It was pure unadulterated slander. And it was glorious.

Great topic, I don't think this is limited to just sprint car racing (look at the mess NASCAR is in right now) but I can't agree more. Some people will always be unhappy no matter what happens. I always used to go rounds with my dad about the prices of going to races. He would refuse to go to Outlaw shows because he wouldn't want to pay more than $20 to see a race. No matter who was in it. Honestly I think most fans get it, they are just happy to see a race. There are a couple things that ALL tracks should have:

1. More than 3 push trucks. I can honestly say here in ohio we are pretty spoiled. Attica, Fremont, Eldora usually are able to get the show started pretty quickly.

2. Clean, MULTIPLE restrooms. This is hit or miss, Wayne County has used the same restroom shack for 30 years, they really need to update that. Waynesfield also could use some updating.

3. Multiple options for Food (mutiple lines, buildings, food trucks/trailers) Pretty much Eldora has this on lock down (there isnt much they can do outside of the track to improve the place).

4. AT LEAST 2 AMBULABCES AT EVERY RACE. this one kinda scares me a little. I've worked on an ambulance for a couple different tracks. From a show standpoint, there is a requirement for at least one squad to be there at all times. So if something bad happens, the racing stops. With at least 2, thats less of a concern. The need for an ambulace isn't always due to the racing. Ive taken fans, crew guys, you name it to the hospital while the races had to be shut down until i came back. Also, most of these tracks are not very close to an Emergency room. 2 squads at every race, minimum. More at bigger races.

5. Family friendly food prices, things to do for kids. You would be suprised that having a small playgound area for younger kids would do to help kids stay entertained during down times. It may seem silly, but those of us with younger kids would love this.

6. Camping available at every race. Eldora has it right, Ice, fire wood, water, Septic service available for the bigger races.

7. Fuel for purchase. Its always fun asking to buy fuel from the guy pitting next to you.

anyway, my $0.02.

Johnny I just want to mention that I usually enjoy your posts (tried to private message you on here many months ago) and agree with this topic. And it's why I don't visit or post here as much as I could. I'm going to bite my tongue and not go in to further commentary on racing fans in this country because I'm sure it will just become a big shit storm of hurt feelings and insults. But you I hope to attend a race with someday.

Sappy, who was that guy that was on there with us?  He was a blast, that forum was just us for a while and man could you light up the canons back then.  Your wisdom is not often shared enough in this forum anymore, why?  If you tell me you sobered up I will be depressed and mad at the same time, don't be a quitter....

If you stop for a minute and think about what trees do to convert CO2 to oxygen and how miraculous and important that is to our existence everyone should go hug one.  Somehow concern for the environment has been labeled as a negative thing but that's akin to shooting ourselves in the foot.

It's ok to love Sprint cars and trees except when they grow in the infield and block our view.  In that case.give me my chain saw.  wink

I don't know if you use Facebook but my profile name is listed below. Otherwise feel free to send me a private message with an email address I could reach you at. I recall you live in PA? Hoping to visit you there for racing (again) in late fall or next year. I think the best thing racing fans can do is utilize the internet to network in person, have a beer, help each other out with actually going to races and enjoying the experience. When people meet face to face a lot of that immature back & forth seems to dissipate.
