Its hard to compare era's and how good Steve was compared to how good Schatz is right now.  When Kinser was racing, he was without a doubt the best sprint car driver in the world.  With so many great drivers of today going to Nascar or chosing to stay in their own backyard, you could make an argument that Schatz isn't even in the top two today.  Just think of the possibilities if Bell and Larson only raced winged sprint cars.

You could make  case for Larson, but that's a ridiculous statement to say Bell is a top 2 sprint driver. Reeks of NASCAR bias that Stan M's post was alluding to.

Well let's see.......We are talking about the toughest race in sprint car racing to win. I think most will agree with that. So, in Kinser's prime years, he raced Wolfgang, with a total of 5 Nationals titles. He also raced Lasoski, with 4 Nationals titles, and raced Mark Kinser with 3 Nationals titles. And last I looked, many of Kinser's competitors are also high up on the all time WoO win list. The also rans that Schatz is facing today, that are suppose to be in the "toughest era ever" according to some, can't hardly squeak out a win in the Nationals at all. Since Schatz's run, Shaffer lucked in to a win, and Johnson drove to a win. Schatz is of course one of the very best all time in sprint car racing, no doubt about that. The comparison of Schatz to Kinser is a logical discussion to have. But comparing the competition both faced during their careers is not.

Steve's career was also much longer, so you're adding a ton of years to the comparison. schatz has been the best for 12 years or so, and in that time, hes been in a class by himself. Who knows what Gravel will bring to the mix.

it's not as though the Dude or Mark were good and top competition for all of Steves 20+ years on top.

So is Kinser better cause he raced against more winners or is Schatz better cause he doesnt let anyone else win? Kinser lost every title someone else won but there seems to be less people winning the title when Schatz doesnt take it himself.

The also ran arguement supplies fuel to both fires

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

Jason Meyers went home. Brian Brown was terrible when a WoO traveler.  Shane Stewart was mid pack before Steve and Sammy got old. NOBODY just dropped in very part time and EVER made Karl sweat like Kyle does to Ricky.  There are no owners doing a thing unique or different anymore.  Luna t shirts bring 170 dollars on Ebay.  Roth shirts will be used as rags 20 years from now.

Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

Oh my God.  I just put my head in the oven.  Can we stop pretending there will never be anything like the day of the big three?

I hate that Donny won again last night.  If you want to argue that he is or isn't the best ever at the Nationals right now, fine.  When he is all done, he is going to be the undisputed king of Knoxville.  He may not win 10 more but he is likely going to win more of them.

The ERA is tougher to win in.  Period.  If you want to argue about the top 3 not as tough as the legendary top 3, fine.  The series and Nationals as a whole, tougher.  If you think it's easier now, you are stuck in the past.

I don't know about everyone else but my first though was "dammit, I just spent $47.99 when I could have just watched nine reruns for free on YouTube".  Seriously though, we always knew he was going to be good since we first saw him in a 360.  He exceeded our expectations.

We're watching history. Sit back and enjoy the ride.  He's only 40 and for whatever reason NASCAR never came calling.  This dominance could last a couple more decades.

right on stan.

remember when the 15 year old punk came in jackson and rocky with his nascar type hauler and thought wholy shit who is thes then to find out it was a kid. he did not always win wrecked alot, but was exciting to watch,, like you said when his careefr is over and he is gone we will all be saying damn wish shatz was around to kick so and so's ass just like some are saying about steve and sammy.

I mean, Donny could run against more guys with Knoxville/WoO wins if he weren't winning so many of them. Not a good point imo.

I was going to say that but u beat me to it, there were only 4 national winners in the field i i remember right. in the last 12 years come 2 other drivers with wins, because they came in and won, i know i willl get bashed for saying this but i call Donny's 2 2nds in the last 12 years as to belucky he was passed. he seems to have another gear when it comes to nationals. Gravel may have been leading but shatz was just stalking trying different thingsthe first 22 laps, just as hedoes every year when the shit gets real that 15 car gets going, all the did for there stop was put on tires and adjust the left front bar from what i could see

History in the making folks, enjoy the ride whie we have it.

comment of the nationals: 500 point night don't sell T-shirts

How are the Nationals tougher now than it was back then? Used to be if you didn't qualify Wed or Thurs and had to run Friday you were in trouble. Now the top 4 from Friday lock into the A main and the Golden Ticket from the Challenge puts you in also. They also did full inverts on the heat races back then.

I agree Schatz is the man right now but I don't see the arguement that this era is tougher to win in. If the cars are so much more equal now why is it that only 3 guys had a legit chance of winning. Gravel, Larson, and Schatz. Really I only had 2 having a chance going into Saturday because I didn't think Larson had shown the speed of Gravel and Schatz.
