Tony beavers car has enough xtra bars that does give him extra protection. I've never seen the driver , but I hope if he is ever in a crash that he has to get out of there he can in a timely way. The left side nerf bar looks like a portable fridge. You look at that picture and he doesn't have much room for exit.

Tony Beaber was at the winged 410 race at Fremont last weekend. Didn't look like anything was different on that car but also have a big piece of aluminum over your head to add some extra padding.

I have a halo on top like the bieber thing and side bars on the left and right but I would be really scared to have anything with a hinge or pivot that could possibly bend and trap me in the car. 



     I see what you mean. Maybe it's just a matter of fine-tuning the idea. Rather than a hinge or a pivot, maybe just something simple to hold the bar onto the cage, like Velcro. or magnets or something.


     Our local wingless sprint class has some cars with halos. The halos usually look like another rollcage 6-8" above the existing one. It seems to me you could just build the cage 6-8" taller to start with and be done.

     Years ago, the local track where I lived had a rule that there had to be 4" of clearance from the top of the helmet to the bottom of the cage, and the bars had to have padding.

Yes, Tony would not accept the Boss Sanction because Boss would not mandate the stuff,    (The halo) is not currently a manditory item.  Boss also doesn't have  a engine rule or tire brand rule.


The Sprintacular's non wing portion is now non sanctioned but under eldora's rules.  We'll see how it turns out as Boss averaged about 45 sprints there

Agree, not to mention get impaled by it in a crash. Even too lightweight of tubing around the driver you have to worry about breaking in a  crash. Welds are a lot stronger on bigger tubing much less a door or hinge. Sprint cars have always been animals and thusly the animals that drive them need caged in properly...lol. No doors allowed Smile

More importantly the odds are way better of getting killed in a normal crash if the bars across the top of the cage are too close to your head. A lot greater than the car ending up on its side and getting perfectly speared by a front bumper. (And Stewart's above might not even do that if front bumper height could slip in. They need a little cross brace.) Don't EVER think about it unless you have plenty of seat belt stretch clearance, probably 4" minimum. How much can your shoulders compress and how loose are your belts? Not even sure. Guess it depends on how big you are and how much you weigh. And for God sake put roll bar padding on it.

Karl Kinser talks about safety in his Open Red interview. What he said made a lot of sense. And some of the things he designed and incorporated into his cars had as much to do with safety as performance. And probably has saved many drivers, but that's a number that can never be determined. The only ones we can count are the most tragic ones. One thing he pointed out was the fact that fatalaties are usually the result of something freakish happening. He speaks about the Kevin Gobrecht tragedy, as one of those freakish things that happen. Some things will just never be prevented.

Stewarts bars seem pretty well thought out. See those allot at Wilmot in the wingless as well.....but I would be more concerned with something like this (Beabers) weakening the cage above the driver in the event of a flip (kink point where the front of that halo attaches to the middle of the upper cage tubes) or even more realistically, getting caught on the wall or hit by another car, and tearing the cage apart. That is just one large blunt edge hanging up there, to get caught on. I would go without a halo before considering that option. jmo



If you think my halo was not thought out, you are sadly mistaken. There are several points to every halo. If you are worried about a kink point, that is one concern. But with everything, there is trade off. The other bars can try to spread the cage open.

All i know, without my halo after my BOSS flip.at Eldora, just after that pic was taken, i either would be rolling through this place today in a chair, or not here at all. I got out of that car and raced after that minutes later. And all my other bars, have saved my arms. I can't count how many times the LS saftey bar has taken a hit where i had to replace it. Thats better than my arm taking the hit.

 

So i guess what im saying is have your opinion, but to imply mine wasn't thought out and say you would go without it before using this one, im only here to reply cuz i hd it. So i really don't care if people don't like it. My life is in that car, trust me, i think about shit.

Definately didnt mean it wasnt thought out, its just a tough situation. Protecting one situation sometimes opens up the doors for other situations. If I was laying there top of the cage exposed in traffic, I would want your setup... tumbling along the top of the wall... I would be worried.  There just probably isnt one fix to cover all freak situations. Good luck the rest of the year!
