USAC WEST COAST SPRINTS CLASH AT TULARE’S FRIDAY/SATURDAY DOUBLEHEADER
By Lance Jennings

MARCH 8, 2016... After opening the point season at Las Vegas, the USAC West Coast Sprint Cars will invade Tulare, California’s Merle Stone Chevrolet Thunderbowl Raceway for two nights of action. Starting this Friday, March 11th, the non-wing sprints will tackle the lighting fast 1/3-mile clay oval with the famed World of Outlaw Craftsman and King of the West Sprint Cars. The popular winged Western RaceSaver Sprints will join Saturday’s showcase. The front gates will open at 4:00pm on both nights, time trials is at 6:00pm, with racing scheduled for 7:00pm. For more event information, visit the track’s website at www.tularethunderbowl.com or call 559.688.0909.

NOTICE TO RACERS: The Friday and Saturday races at Tulare will be run under the USAC West Coast Rule Book and a $35 entry fee will be collected both days. The Hoosier 105/16 Medium is the ONLY legal right rear tire and all four corners must be Hoosier. Cockpit adjustable shocks are NOT allowed and engine restrictor rules are 1-7/8” with open heads and 2-3/16” with ASCS cylinder heads. The weight rule is 1,475 lbs. with driver. Thunderbowl Raceway has 95db at 100 feet state mandated sound rule and the USAC West Coast Sprint Car Rule Book can be found online at www.westcoastsprintcars.com and www.usacracing.com.

Heading into Friday’s event, the Tulare County Fairgrounds has hosted twenty-eight USAC West Coast Sprint Car races. Ryan Bernal leads all drivers with ten victories and holds the 1-lap qualifying record of 15.133, set on March 13, 2015. On October 3rd, Jace Vander Weerd added his name to the Tulare record books by dominating the 30-lap main event. The series win list at Thunderbowl Raceway is at the bottom of this release.

After winning last Friday’s USAC SouthWest co-sanctioned “FVP Sin City Showdown” at Las Vegas, Bryan Clauson (Noblesville, Indiana) leads the point chase. Racing Mike Martin’s #16B Cancer Treatment Centers of America / Jonathan Byrd’s Hospitality Group Maxim, Clauson surged past Stevie Sussex off the last corner to score the victory. At press time, the Indianapolis 500 driver is expected to compete at Tulare with both the Outlaw and USAC West Coast Sprint Cars.

Stevie Sussex (Tempe, Arizona) is currently second in the championship point standings. Driving Mike Burkhart’s #21AZ Stratis Construction / Westin Diversified RSS, Sussex looked to repeat at Las Vegas until Clauson took the checkered flags. The USAC SouthWest regular is not expected to compete at Tulare and will race at Peoria, Arizona’s Canyon Speedway on March 26th.

Running six points behind Stevie Sussex is Brody Roa (Garden Grove, California). Piloting the BR Performance owned #91R HD Industries / Lee & Norma Leonard Maxim, Roa led three laps at Las Vegas before scoring fourth. Brody won the 360 Western World Championships in Tucson last November and will be looking to add Tulare to his win list.

Brady Bacon (Broken Arrow, Oklahoma) sits fourth in the West Coast point standings. Racing Keith Ford’s #73 Berry Pack / King Racing Products Spike, Bacon was in the mix for the Las Vegas win before scoring third. Like Clauson, the former USAC National Sprint Car Champion will be at Tulare racing “double duty” with the USAC West Coast and Outlaw Sprint Cars.

Josh Hodges (Tijeras, New Mexico) is fifth in the chase for the championship. Driving the family owned #74X Jackson Compaction / Mesilla Valley Transportation Maxim, Hodges finished fifth at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The young driver has already won two Winter Challenge features at Canyon Speedway and is not expected to compete at Tulare.

Among the other drivers expected to be in action are Trey Marcham, D.J. Johnson, Jace Vander Weerd, Troy Rutherford, Max Adams, Austin Liggett, Jeff Sibley, Richard Vander Weerd, “Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr., Shannon McQueen, Bud Kaeding, and more.
