USAC/CRA SPRINTS RETURN TO PERRIS FOR 20TH ANNUAL BUDWEISER OVAL NATIONALS

NOVEMBER 9, 2015... Starting Thursday, November 12th, the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series will return to Don Kazarian's Perris Auto Speedway for the "20th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals, presented by All Coast Construction." Co-sanctioned with the USAC National Sprints, 50 racers from across the country have entered the prestigious three-day event. Saturday’s 40-lap main event will pay $25,000 to the winner, second will earn $15,000, third will pay $10,000, and $1,000 to start. Thursday and Friday’s 30-lap features will pay $5,000-to-win and $500 to start. In all, over $130,000 in purse money will be awarded for three nights of action. The festivities will begin on Wednesday, November 11th with a special practice session for cars that are only entered in the Oval Nationals. Admission to the grandstands is FREE and cars will be on the track between 5:00pm and 6:00pm. The concession stand will be open with $2 pizza and $2 beers for sale. The current Oval Nationals pre-entry list is at the end of this release.

This year, “The Cowboy” Tony Jones will serve as Grand Marshall of the prestigious race. The son of National Hall of Fame Driver Bubby Jones won the 2000 Oval Nationals and the USAC/CRA Championship in 2007. Noted as one of the most popular drivers in Perris Auto Speedway history, the retired Jones still ranks fourth in USAC/CRA Feature Wins (20) and tied for seventh in Fast Time Awards (7). In addition, “The Cowboy” has won some of the most the prominent races on the West Coast such as the Bagley Classic (2002 & 2006), Firecracker (2006), Glenn Howard Classic (2008), Hall of Fame Classic (2001), Jack Kindoll Classic (2006), Legends of Ascot Night (2006), Salute to Indy (2006), and the Sokola Classic (2001).

Thursday’s “20th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals" opener will be the 179th Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car race at Perris Auto Speedway. Dating back to March 6, 2004, the “Southern California Home of Major League Sprint Car Racing” has been the “home track” for the series. This year at Perris, action in the previous eight races has been dominated by “The Demon” Damion Gardner and Richard Vander Weerd. Gardner has scored eight triumphs, including the last four main events and Vander Weerd has three victories. “The Demon” leads all USAC/CRA drivers with 37 “home track” wins and Nic Faas holds the 1-lap track record of 15.833, set on February 25, 2012. Returning to the classic three-day format, every night of the Oval Nationals are point shows for both the USAC National and USAC/CRA Sprint Cars. Last season, “The Madman” Robert Ballou won the preliminary and finale, joining the winner’s list with Jimmy Sills, Rip Williams, Bud Kaeding, Cory Kruseman, Dave Darland, Jesse Hockett, Damion Gardner and more. Heading to the Oval Nationals, Mike Spencer of Temecula, California has a 22-point advantage over the competition. Driving Ron Chaffin’s #50 Grubstake Mini Storage / Madera Produce Maxim, Spencer won the October 24th “Hall of Fame Classic” at Canyon Speedway Park. To date, the five-time champion has two feature wins, six Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, eight heat race victories, two Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Semi Main Wins, two DMI / Keizer Wheels Hard Charger Awards, eighteen top-10 finishes, and 28 feature laps led. Mike won the 2012 Oval Nationals and will be looking for the $25,000 triumph.

Concord, California’s “The Demon” Damion Gardner is second in the USAC/CRA point chase. Racing Mark Alexander's #4 Scott Sales Company / Weld Racing Spike, Gardner scored eleventh in the “Hall of Fame Classic” finale after winning the previous night. Heading to Perris, the three-time champion has eight feature wins, two Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, nine heat race victories, fifteen top-10 finishes, and 179 feature laps led to his credit. “The Demon” leads all series drivers with sixty-five wins and will have his sights on gaining valuable points with his third Oval Nationals victory.

Richard Vander Weerd of Visalia, California ranks third in the point standings. Piloting the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Stone Gate Development Maxim, Vander Weerd raced from twelfth to seventh at Canyon Speedway Park. To date, the 2011 USAC West Coast Champion has four feature wins, five heat race victories, one dash win, one DMI / Keizer Wheels Hard Charger Award, seventeen top-10 finishes, and 134 feature laps led. Enjoying his best season with USAC/CRA, Richard has five career wins and will be looking to add the “Oval Nationals” to his resume.

After finishing sixth in the “Hall of Fame Classic,” Anaheim, California’s Jake Swanson has climbed to fourth in the standings. Driving Tom & Laurie Sertich’s #92 Huntington Beach Glass & Mirror / Ram-Bull Racing Victory, the 2012 Rookie of the Year has four Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, one heat race victory, two DMI / Keizer Wheels Hard Charger Awards, sixteen top-10 finishes, and 12 feature laps led on the season. Jake will have his sights on his first USAC Sprint Car victory at the “Budweiser Oval Nationals.”

Austin Williams of Yorba Linda, California ranks fifth in the chase for the championship. Racing Jack Jory’s #2 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike, Williams scored fifteenth in the Canyon Speedway feature. To date, the 2009 Rookie of the Year has three heat race victories, one DMI / Keizer Wheels Hard Charger Award, fifteen top-10 finishes, and 28 feature laps led. Austin has three career USAC/CRA wins and will be looking add the “Oval Nationals” trophy to his collection.

Currently eleventh in the point standings, “The Flying Peanut” Parker Colston of Lake Elsinore, California leads the chase for Rookie of the Year honors. “Thunder” Tommy Malcolm, Anthony Lopiccolo, and Michael Curtis are also in contention. Local 360 iron-block powered Sprint Cars are welcome to enter the Oval Nationals. Per USAC rules, all fuel-injected 410 and 360 powered sprint cars must run the Hoosier 105/16 Medium Right Rear Tire, cars must pass a tech inspection, and one-way radios are mandatory.

With ten wins on the year, Rocklin, California’s “The Madman” Robert Ballou leads the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car point standings. Chase Stockon, “The People’s Champion” Dave Darland, 2014 Champion Brady Bacon, Jon Stanbrough, Kevin Thomas Jr., “The Bear” Chris Windom, Richard Griffin Classic Champion C.J. Leary, Tracy Hines, and Justin Grant round out the top-10 drivers.
