USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series

JACE VANDER WEERD STRIKES AGAIN AT TULARE
By Lance Jennings

OCTOBER 12, 2015... Racing past polesitter Kyle Smith on the second lap, Jace Vander Weerd of Visalia, California won Saturday’s “KRC Safety Fall Shootout” at Tulare’s Thunderbowl Raceway. For Vander Weerd, the $1,500 USAC West Coast Sprint Car triumph was his second victory in a row. D.J. Johnson, Bud Kaeding, Ryan Bernal, and Richard Vander Weerd followed Jace to the checkered flags.

In one of the closest finishes in series history, Jace Vander Weerd claimed the sixth win of his career. Starting fifth, D.J. Johnson was looking to score his first victory and chased down the leader. Vander Weerd managed to shake free from the challenger, but Johnson made a last corner surge. With the checkered flag waving, Johnson’s charge fell 6/100 of a second short in a photo finish as the crowd roared.

Piloting the family owned #88 Vander Weerd Construction / Stone Gate Development Maxim, Jace Vander Weerd qualified eighth out of seventeen racers and ran fourth in his heat race. The 2010 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year left Tulare ranked third in points with two heat race victories, one Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Semi-Main win, fourteen top-10 finishes, and 59 feature laps led.

Stockton, California’s D.J. Johnson gave a valiant effort that fell short at Thunderbowl Raceway. Driving the family owned #33 Proplant Farm Services / J. Milano Company Eagle, Johnson returned with a fresh engine that turned sixth quick in time trials and ran third in his heat race. At press time, the former USAC Western Classic Rookie of the Year is fifth in the point standings with six heat race victories, one DMI / Ultra Shield Race Products Hard Charger Award, ten top-10 finishes, and 37 feature laps led to his credit.

Bud Kaeding of Campbell, California took third in the “KRC Safety Fall Shootout.” Racing Junior Bowman’s #29 Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / Kaeding Performance Maxim, Kaeding qualified seventh overall and placed fourth in his heat race. The 2012 Champion left Tulare sitting eighth in the point chase with one feature win, one heat race victory, two DMI / Ultra Shield Race Products Hard Charger Awards, eight top-10 finishes, and 19 feature laps led on the year.

Hollister, California’s Ryan Bernal charged from tenth to score fourth in the 30-lap main event. Piloting Mike Phulps’ #56 Metal Works / Tri-L Mandarin Ranch ART, Bernal was fourth fast in time trials and did not start his heat race. The 2-time USAC Western Classic Champion is currently seventh in the point standings with six feature wins, one Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award, two top qualifier awards, four heat race victories, two DMI / Ultra Shield Race Products Hard Charger Awards, nine top-10 finishes, and 114 feature laps led.

Richard Vander Weerd of Visalia, California ran fifth at the Tulare County Fairgrounds. The 2011 Champion heads to Tucson’s Western World ranked second in points with two feature wins, one Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award, one dash win, four heat race victories, two DMI / Ultra Shield Race Products Hard Charger Awards, twelve top-10 finishes, and 43 feature laps led on the season.

Loomis, California’s Max Adams earned the night’s DMI / Ultra Shield Race Products “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a ninth place run from seventeenth. Racing his #5X ART Speed Equipment / MotoWear International ART, Adams was seventeenth in time trials and finished seventh in his heat race. Max left Tulare ranked fifteenth in points with one Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award, one heat race victory, and six top-10 finishes.
