CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINTS SEASON REACHES HALFWAY POINT SATURDAY AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY!
(Torrance, CA, July 1, 2015) The California Lightning Sprint Car Series 2015 season will reach the halfway point this Saturday night, July 4th, in the Annual Independence Day race at Perris Auto Speedway. The USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, PAS Senior & Young Gun Sprints and the biggest and best fireworks show in Riverside County, presented by The City of Perris, will also be part of the holiday celebration. Spectator gates will open at 3:00 PM with racing at 7:00.
Lomita’s Bobby Michnowicz, has been the driver to beat in the CLS thus far in 2015. After winning the first two races of the campaign, the two-time series champion had a couples seconds and a third before starting his current three race win streak on Labor Day weekend. Kingsburg’s Doug Nunes, with two trips to victory circle, and Upland’s Alex Grigoreas, who has one, are the only other drivers in the series with wins this year.
Saturday’s holiday event at The PAS will be second of four for the CLS at the famous Riverside County clay oval in 2015. Michnowicz won the first race on the half-mile on May 23rd. In what may be a bad omen for the competition, Michnowicz has won the July 4th race the past three years. The last driver to beat him on July 4th was Placentia’s Dan Hillberg in 2011.
Heading into Saturday’s race, the 51-year-old Cal State Dominguez Hills graduate holds a 118-points lead over Grigoreas in the championship standings. Fort Irwin’s Jeff Dyer sits third and is 48-points behind former teammate Grigoreas. Hillberg, a long time resident of Placentia, is fourth with San Bernardino’s James Heling completing the top five.
In the Rookie of the Year standings, Chino’s Pat Kelley, who raced stock cars at Ascot and other tracks 30-years ago, holds a 50-point lead over Jon Robertson of Torrance. Don Kuener of Perris is third in the freshman chase.
Fans arriving early at Saturday’s race can enjoy an on track autograph & photo session with all of the drivers, games with the kids and drivers, a live band and Pink’s Hot Dogs.
After Saturday at Perris, the CLS will get back on the track July 18th at the Ventura Raceway.
