USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series

RICHARD VANDER WEERD EARNS DRAMATIC VICTORY AT HANFORD
By Lance Jennings

JUNE 30, 2015... Coming off the last corner, Richard Vander Weerd of Visalia, California passed Danny Faria Jr. to claim his second USAC West Coast Sprint Car victory of the season. For his efforts, the 2011 Champion earned $1,500 by winning Saturday’s main event at Hanford’s Keller Auto Speedway at Kings Fairgrounds. Fast qualifier Faria, Brody Roa, Mike Spencer, and Trey Marcham rounded out the top-five drivers.

Five-time USAC/CRA Champion Mike Spencer sped by pole sitter Trey Marcham to take the early lead. Making his first West Coast start, Spencer began to run away from the field but would have to deal with the sixth starting Faria. The two veteran drivers swapped the lead several times as Vander Weerd entered the battle. The leaders raced in close quarters as they caught the slower traffic and ran three-wide on the speedway. Faria found the bottom groove to his liking and grabbed the lead on lap eighteen. Choosing to run the outside line, Vander Weerd powered by Spencer to take second and set his sights on the leader. Gaining momentum off the corners, Vander Weerd pressed Faria for the top spot, but Danny was able to shake free. On the last lap, Vander Weerd continued to use the high line and made up some ground. With the checkered flag waving, Richard powered by Danny to take his 17th series win by .44 seconds.

Racing the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Battery Worx Maxim, Richard Vander Weerd qualified second out of fourteen racers and took fifth in his heat race. Starting fifth in the main event, Vander Weerd also earned the night’s DMI / Ultra Shield Race Products “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with his performance. Richard has climbed to second in the point chase with one Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award, three heat race victories, two DMI / Ultra Shield Race Products Hard Charger Awards, seven top-10 finishes, and 37 feature laps led.

After leading twelve laps, Tipton, California’s “Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr. had to settle for second at Hanford. Piloting Junior Bowman’s #17V Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / SurfnSprint Spike, Faria earned his twelfth career Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award and placed third in his heat race. On the strength of one feature win, two fast time awards, four heat race victories, one high point driver award, eight top-10 finishes, and 53 feature laps led, the point leader has a 121-point advantage.

Brody Roa from Garden Grove, California battled hard to take third at the Kings County Fairgrounds. Driving the BR Performance #91R HD Industries / Burris Racing Maxim, Roa was third quick in time trials and finished second to Max Adams in his heat race. In limited starts, the former Wagsdash Champion sits eleventh in the standings with one heat race victory and three top-10 finishes.

Temecula, California’s Mike Spencer led the first seventeen laps and claimed fourth at the checkered flags. Racing Mark Priestley’s #7M Roy Miller Freightlines / Sander Engineering Maxim, Spencer qualified fourth overall and placed fourth in his heat race. Mike left Hanford ranked twenty-ninth in the point standings.

Trey Marcham of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma scored fifth in Hanford’s 30-lap feature. Piloting Keith Ford’s #73 Berry Pack / King Racing Products Spike, Marcham was sixth fast in time trials and won the 10-lap DJ Safety Heat Race #2. The leading rookie candidate has risen to fifth in points with one Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award, two heat race victories, seven top-10 finishes, and 4 feature laps led to his credit.

Loomis, California’s Max Adams raced to his first heat race victory of the year in the Extreme Mufflers sponsored event. Driving his #5X ART Speed Equipment / MotoWear International ART, Adams qualified fifth overall and took seventh in the main event. The young driver heads to July 25th’s Peter Murphy Classic tied for fourteenth in the standings with one Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award and four top-10 finishes.
