USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series

TRISTAN GUARDINO BREAKS THROUGH AT SANTA MARIA
By Lance Jennings

JUNE 22, 2015... Continuing his bid for Rookie of the Year, Tristan Guardino of Fremont, California led all 30-laps to claim his first USAC West Coast Sprint Car victory. By claiming Saturday’s main event at Santa Maria Raceway, Guardino earned $1,500 for his efforts. Brody Roa, Bud Kaeding, Trey Marcham, and Richard Vander Weerd followed the young driver to the checkered flags.

Piloting Steve Watt’s #81 Maxwell Industries / Steve Watt Enterprises Maxim, Tristan Guardino outdueled polesitter Richard Vander Weerd to grab the lead. Once out front, the rookie contender built a small lead, but had to fend off several challenges from the fourth starting Brody Roa. Once in heavy traffic, Tristan avoided disaster with a few near misses and a spinning lapped car. In the closing laps, Roa closed to within striking distance but could not catch Guardino on this night.

Becoming the 38th driver to claim a West Coast feature win, Guardino left Santa Maria ranked seventh in the standings. Currently 42 points behind leading rookie Trey Marcham, Tristan began his night by qualifying sixth out of twenty-two racers and placing fourth in his heat race. To date, Guardino has one Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Semi-Main win and five top-10 finishes on the season.

Garden Grove, California’s Brody Roa pressured Guardino, but had to settle for second at Santa Maria. Racing the BR Performance #91R HD Industries / Burris Racing Maxim, Roa was fourth quick in time trials and took third in his heat race. In limited starts, the former Wagsdash Champion is thirteenth in points with one heat race victory and two top-10 finishes in the campaign.

Bud Kaeding of Campbell, California scored third in the Saturday night feature after starting fifth. Driving Junior Bowman’s #29 Buster & Ziggy Enterprise / Kaeding Performance Maxim, Kaeding qualified second overall and ran second to Tom Hendricks in his heat race. The 2012 Champion is currently ninth in the point chase with one feature win, one DMI / Ultra Shield Race Products Hard Charger Award, four top-10 finishes, and 17 feature laps led.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma’s Trey Marcham had a solid night at Santa Maria with a fourth place finish. Piloting Keith Ford’s #73 Berry Pack / King Racing Products Spike, Marcham was fifth fast in time trials and was third in his heat race. The leading rookie contender is tied for fifth in points with one Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award, one heat race victory, six top-10 finishes, and four feature laps led to his credit.

Richard Vander Weerd of Visalia, California placed fifth at the checkered flags. Racing the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Stone Gate Development Maxim, Richard qualified seventh and finished fourth in his heat race. The 2011 Champion is tied for fifth in the standings with one feature win, one Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award, three heat race victories, one DMI / Ultra Shield Race Products Hard Charger Award, six top-10 finishes, and 36 feature laps led on the year.

Stockton, California’s D.J. Johnson earned the night’s DMI / Ultra Shield Race Products “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a tenth place run from fifteenth. Driving the family owned #33 Proplant Farm Services / J. Milano Company Eagle, Johnson was fifteenth quick in time trials and won the night’s Saldana Racing Products / Keizer Wheels Heart Race #3. Heading to Hanford, the former USAC Western Classic Sprint Rookie of the Year is fourth in points with four heat race victories, seven top-10 finishes, and 18 feature laps led.

“Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr. of Tipton, California earned his eleventh career Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award. Piloting Junior Bowman’s #17V Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / SurfnSprint Spike, Faria won the 10-lap Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1 and scored twenty-first in the feature after an early exit. The 2013 Champion leads the point standings with one feature win, one high point driver award, four heat race victories, seven top-10 finishes, and 41 feature laps led on the season.

Tom Hendricks of Simi Valley, California raced to victory in the 10-lap DJ Safety Heat Race #2. Driving his #14 Snap-On Tools / Cory Kruseman’s Sprint Car & Midget Driving School ITI, Hendricks qualified fourteenth overall and scored fourteenth in his first West Coast start. The Ventura veteran left Santa Maria tied with Corey Ballard for fortieth in the championship points.
