CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINT CARS AT SANTA MARIA SATURDAY!

(Placentia, CA, May 5, 2015)  For the first time in nearly two years, the California Lightning Sprint Car Series will return to the Santa Maria Raceway this Saturday night, May 9th.  Joining the CLS on “Mega 97 FM Night” program will be the Santa Maria Sprints Cars, CDCRA Dwarf Cars, Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks.  Spectator gates will open at 4:00 PM with qualifying at 5:00 and the first race at 6:00.

Saturday’s race at the new and improved racing facility will be the fifth outing of the season for the CLS.  Two-time and defending champion Bobby Michnowicz of Lomita won the first two races of 2015, but he has finished second in the last two races to Doug Nunes.  Just like those last two races, Nunes, who lives in Kingsburg, also beat Michnowicz to the checkered flag and won the last CLS main event at Santa Maria on August 10, 2013.

On the strength of his two wins and two second place finishes this season, Michnowicz, who used last week’s CLS off weekend to journey to Placerville to win the Wayne Albright Memorial, has a comfortable 88-point advantage over Upland’s Alex Grigoreas in the championship standings.  Fort Irwins Jeff Dyer, who is hoping to be fit to race Saturday after recent leg surgery, is only 17-points behind Grigoreas.  Placentia’s Dan Hillberg is fourth and only trails Dyer by 3-points.  San Bernardino’s James Heling, who is off to the best start of his career, is fifth.

After Saturday’s show at Santa Maria, the CLS will have one week off before their first 2015 appearance at Perris Auto Speedway at the annual “Salute to Indy” on May 23rd.
