USAC/CRA “CALIFORNIA SPRINT WEEK” BEGINS AUGUST 30TH
By Lance Jennings

PHOENIX, AZ – AUGUST 21, 2014... After a successful return to Perris, the cars and stars of the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series are preparing for the highly anticipated “California Sprint Week.” Beginning August 30th at Calistoga’s Louie Vermeil Classic, the five-race in eight night tour will also visit Chico, Watsonville, and Santa Maria. At press time, the Calistoga events will pay a minimum of $5,000-to-win as the other shows will pay $2,750-to-win and $350-to-start.

After scoring his seventh victory of the season, “The Demon” Damion Gardner leads a talented roster of drivers to the “California Sprint Week.” Mike Spencer, Nic Faas, Matt Mitchell, Austin Williams, Brody Roa, “The Cadillac” Cody Williams, Richard Vander Weerd, Jake Swanson, and “The Kruser” Cory Kruseman round out the top-10 drivers in the point chase. Mitchell, Spencer, Vander Weerd, and the Williams brothers have claimed one feature win during the campaign.

Currently eleventh in points, Yorba Linda’s Logan Williams leads the chase for Rookie of the Year honors. Snohomish, Washington’s Gary Taylor, Cody Swanson of Norco, and Verdemont Heights’ Chris Gansen are also in contention.

NOTICE TO COMPETITORS: Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway and Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico have a strict 90db at 100 feet state mandated sound rule. The Flowmaster “Suitcase” (Part 53545-USAC) is the legal muffler for both race tracks. If the sound levels are broken, the racer will be disqualified and not allowed to compete. Per USAC/CRA rules, all fuel-injected 410 and 360 powered sprint cars must run the Hoosier 105/16 Medium Right Rear Tire and all four corners must be Hoosier. Cars must pass a tech inspection and one-way radios are mandatory for drivers. USAC/CRA charges a $25 entry fee to all competitors, which includes a transponder rental. Carbureted spec sprints are welcome to race with USAC/CRA and can still use their track legal Hoosier tires.

The “California Sprint Week” will open at the famed Calistoga Speedway on August 30th and 31st for the “7th Annual Louie Vermeil Classic.” Since August 2008, twelve USAC/CRA races have been held at the Napa County Fairgrounds and Damion Gardner, Mike Spencer, and Kevin Swindell are tied for the series lead with two victories. Last season, Bud Kaeding and Kyle Larson stood atop the podium and “The Bullet” Blake Miller still holds the 1-lap qualifying track record of 19.078, set on September 4, 2010. The Honda USAC Western Midgets will share the spotlight and for more information, visit www.louievermeilclassic.net, www.calistogaspeedway.org, or call 916.773.7225.

On Thursday, September 4th, the “California Sprint Week” will continue at Dennis Gage's Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. Held during the "Gold Cup Race of Champions," the event will mark the second appearance of USAC/CRA at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds. On September 8, 2011, Kyle Larson won the co-sanctioned race with the USAC Western Classic Racing Series and “The Wild Child” Jac Haudenschild set the rack record of 13.600. The Honda USAC Western and Bay Cities Racing Association Midgets will join the action packed card and for more information, visit www.silverdollarspeedway.com or call 530.350.7275.

The following night, Friday, September 5th, John Prentice's Ocean Speedway in Watsonville will host the fourth round of the tour. Since July 2010, seven USAC/CRA races have been held at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds and Mike Spencer won his series leading third victory on June 27th. Heading into the event, “The Cadillac” Cody Williams holds the 1-lap qualifying track record of 12.701 set on August 10, 2012. The “USAC/CRA Night at the Races” will also showcase 4-Bangers, Dwarf Cars, IMCA Modifieds, and IMCA Sport Mods. For more event information, visit www.oceanspeedway.com or call 831.662.WINN (9466).

Promoted by Chris Kearns and the United States Auto Club, Santa Maria Speedway will host the finale of the “California Sprint Week” on Saturday, September 6th. The race will be the eighteenth appearance of USAC/CRA at the 1/3-mile oval and “The Cadillac” Cody Williams earned his first series win on July 5th. “The Kruser” Cory Kruseman, Mike Spencer, and Austin Williams are tied for the USAC/CRA lead with two feature wins and “The Bullet” Blake Miller holds the 1-lap qualifying record of 13.230, set on June 14, 2008. The special event will also showcase the USAC HPD Midgets and Mini Stocks. For more event information, visit www.racesantamariaspeedway.com or call 805.714.8538.
