Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series

MIKE SPENCER CLAIMS VICTORY AT WATSONVILLE
By Lance Jennings

WATSONVILLE, CA – JUNE 29, 2014... Temecula’s Mike Spencer led all 30-laps to claim his first main event of the year at Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway. The $2,750 Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car victory was the five-time champion’s 35th series triumph, tying Cory Kruseman for second on the win list. Richard Vander Weerd, Michael Pickens, Nic Faas, and Matt Mitchell followed Spencer to the checkered flags.

While Spencer dominated the action and sliced through the slower traffic, the closing laps had a wild battle for position. Ryan Bernal had taken second from Pickens, but was soon facing pressure from “The Demon” Damion Gardner. On the white flag lap, the two made contact resulting in a spin for Bernal. On the second restart, Gardner and Faas tangled for second while Vander Weerd shot past the veterans to take the runner-up spot. Faas recovered to claim fourth and Damion struggled with front end damage to score fourteenth.

Driving Ron Chaffin’s #50 Grubstake Mini Storage / Madera Produce Maxim, Mike Spencer won his third career feature at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. Before starting second in the main event, Mike had qualified seventh out of twenty-three racers and ran second in his heat race. Spencer left Ocean Speedway third in points and 96 points behind Gardner.

Richard Vander Weerd of Visalia took second in the Watsonville feature after starting fifth. Piloting the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Battery Worx Maxim, Vander Weerd was fourth fast in time trials and won the 10-lap Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. Heading to Petaluma, the former USAC West Coast Sprint Champion is fifth in the point chase.

Making his first non-winged 410 start, Auckland, New Zealand’s Michael Pickens claimed third at Ocean Speedway. Racing Keith Ford’s #73X Berry Pack / King Racing Products Spike, Pickens qualified second overall and placed fourth in his heat race.

Nic Faas of Huntington Beach scored fourth in Watsonville’s 30-lap main event. Driving Keith Ford’s #73 Berry Pack / King Racing Products Spike, Faas was eighth fast in time trials and won the DJ Safety Heat Race #2. The 2008 Rookie of the Year left Watsonville ranked second in the standings, 67 points behind “The Demon.”

Yorba Linda’s Matt Mitchell charged to fifth at Watsonville after starting tenth. Piloting his #37 MPD Racing / ART Enterprises Maxim, Mitchell qualified eleventh overall and finished third in his heat race. Heading to Petaluma, the 2-time “Salute to Indy” winner sat fourth in the point standings.

Using a backup car, Jake Swanson of Anaheim earned his first Keizer Wheels / Racing Optics "Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a twelfth place run from twenty-second. Racing Tom & Laurie Sertich’s #92 Huntington Beach Glass & Mirror / Circle Track Performance Victory, Swanson was third quick in time trials and scored sixth in his heat race. The 2012 Rookie of the Year left Ocean Speedway ranked eighth in the point chase.

Norco’s Cody Swanson claimed his first career Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award at Watsonville. Driving John Springstead’s #36 Day Construction / Frank’s Fab Shop Triple X, Swanson took sixth in his heat race and ran ninth in the feature. The veteran of the USAC Western Midget ranks is making his bid for USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year honors.

“The Demon” Damion Gardner won the 10-lap Saldana Racing Products / Circle Track Performance Heat Race #3. Piloting Mark Alexander’s #4 Scott Sales Company / J&D Performance Spike, Gardner qualified ninth overall and scored fourteenth in the main event. The point leader held a 67 point advantage heading to Petaluma Speedway.
