17-YEAR-OLD KEVIN MICHNOWICZ LEADS LIGHTNING SPRINT CARS INTO BAKERSFIELD SATURDAY!
(Placentia, CA, March 22, 2011) Teenage racing sensation Kevin Michnowicz will lead the California Lightning Sprint Car Series into "The West's Fastest 1/3 Mile High Banked Clay Oval," the Bakersfield Speedway, this Saturday night, March 26. Saturday's race will be the first of four CLS races at Bakersfield this year and the second race in the CLS 18 event 2011 schedule. Spectator gates will open at 4:30 PM and the first race will be at 6:00. Joining the CLS at Bakersfield will be the Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, NMRA 3/4 Midgets and the Youth Racing Series.
Just two days before his 17th birthday, Michnowicz, the son of 1994 CRA Sprint Car champion Bobby Michnowicz, bested a 20-car field and scored a convincing win in the season opener at Perris Auto Speedway on March 12th. The Lomita based youngster began the race inside the third row and was in the lead by lap seven and won the main event by a half straightaway over veteran Tim Brown of Wildomar and two-time series champion Brent Sexton of Lakeside. Sexton, driving for Seth Kramer, came all the way from the 18th starting position.
Heading into this week's race at Bakersfield, Michnowicz and 51-year-old Brown are deadlocked at the top of the point standings. Sexton is ranked third while 13-year-old Sheldon Creed of San Diego and defending series champion Jarrett Kramer of Spring Valley, who was plagued with a sensor glitch in his engine at Perris, complete the top five. All of the top five are expected to be on hand this Saturday. You can see the top 10 in points and the full 2011 CLS schedule below.
