Today was a weird day…

The last few years, I’ve organized a Kasey Kahne Racing “end of year flea market type of event.”

Each year it gets bigger and better, no matter how much sleep I lose the night before, almost certain I’m the only one that’s going to show up.

This year I promised those in attendance that Justin would take center stage and answer any and all questions our Carolina minds had toward the confusion of sprint car racing.

Knowing most in attendance would be gun shy to blast the first question in fear of being labeled an idiot among their competition who equally had no clue what any of us were talking about, I casually came up with a list of questions I secretly wanted to know, BUT labeled them as questions others wanted me to ask so they wouldn’t get embarrassed!

Pure genius on my part if you ask me…

Thinking Justin would allow a few minutes to enchant and educate us toward situations we would later find obvious through trial and error turned into almost an hour’s master class sprinkled with stories of his years with Karl Kinser and adventures in Australia.

No matter how many years we’ve continued this local tradition, and how much I feel we’ve helped out the Carolina sprint car scene, it never gets old.

I remember standing in a parking lot at a Hilton hotel in Daytona way back when I was a kid staring in “awwww” at the big bull on the side of Roth’s rig.  Tonight I found myself standing on the back door of it asking a future hall of famer questions about racing in my neck of the woods.

The coolest part wasn’t hearing my questions answered.  It was staring at the crowd and seeing how zoned in they were on his responses and thinking, our local racing just got that much more competitive and exciting.

Some of you might be asking why I titled this article “Today was a weird day.”  And here’s why…

I’ve been helping my homebuilding company in sales, construction, and warranty lately.  Thankfully, starting this past Monday, I’m back to being just in sales.  Today, I met my warranty manager at an insanely great Mexican restaurant for lunch to hand over my remaining warranties when I glanced outside just in time to see an SUV slam through a power pole knocking out the power.

Running toward the vehicle, screaming 911, and other creative words, myself and another witness begged the driver to stay awake and that helps on the way.  As his breathing slows down, his mouth fills with blood, and his eyes roll back and lids shut, we stop worrying about his back and bear hug this huge guy out of the car and lay him on the ground.  I’m about to do CPR as soon as he hits the ground, but all of a sudden his eyes open and he starts breathing again.  I start screaming at him to stay with us.  You could hear the paramedics hauling ass in the back ground.

An ambulance shows up and rushes off.

I head home to take a shower, wash the blood off, and change clothes.  Then hauled butt to meet a couple and walk my homes in a really cool neighborhood I’m selling in Concord.  After that, I had to lay in the back seat of my truck with my feet hanging outside the window afraid I pulled something.

Two hours later, I’m asking Justin in front of forty folks, how do you choose your gear?

So, yeah… Its been a beautifully weird day.

Pray for that guy.
