I think Ian Madsen will be the WoO 2018 Rookie of the year. At this point I don't think anybody else can touch him. Heck fire- I'd even be willing to lay odds that he gets it.

1st year with the Outlaws and looking like he will finish 8th in points, that is pretty impressive.  Especially with so many tracks that he has never raced on before.  Besides all that he is a great guy in the pits as well, I know this doesnt have any effect on rookie of the year but every time I see him in the pits he is squattin down talking to the kids, signing things and taking pictures with them.

Does he even have anyone competing against him for rookie honors?

I bought a shirt off of him after the races at Williams Grove this summer. I talked to one of the crew guys who went in the trailer then to my surprise, Ian himself comes out of the trailer with a shirt and a sticker and thanked me personally. He's a great guy and he can wheel it. I'm betting he'll make some noise next year now that he's seen some of these tracks.

I think its pretty safe he will win when he is the only candidate. My understanding is that it is only awarded to a platinum member in their first year so no one else qualifies. Correct me if Im wrong please.

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

Nope, that's why Murphy's post was dripping in jest.

But I'd still be willing to take bets on it. I'll let you name the odds. Step right up ladies and gentlemen.....

If you do have to be a platinum member to qualify that would seem to tarnish the accomplishment a bit. I suppose he'll finish higher in points than any non-platinum member anyhow, so it's probably a moot point.

Haha, like I said I like your odds wink

I don't think it tarnishes the accomplishment, mainly because its a WoO Award for the WoO.  Not that I could see a scenario where someone would follow the group for a high % of races and NOT join.  As you know a lot of teams/drivers sign up for Platinum beneifts and drop out/off after the initial CA / West swing after Easter.  So someone would have to follow a high % of races and do really well in said races and NOT join Platinum status to finish high enough to win ROY.  But that's all moot bc it's a WoO Award for WoO members.

You make a good point about WoO award for WoO members. Now I'm going to find myself going back and trying to figure out why they didn't have a Rookie of the year awarded some years, even before they had platinum memberships and such.

Hmmm...before "platinum memberships" maybe it was you had to attend a % of races meaning if there wasn't a "rookie" who ran X number of races then there essentially was "no rookie on tour" that year thus no RoY?  Was there a membership "back in the day" that just wasn't like "out in the public forum" when they went Platinum?  I have no clue.  Wow i used a lot of " " there, huh? HaHa

Paging Johnny...

Regardless Ian is having a great year and doing damn good his first year with the Outlaws.  He'll continue to do well next year too!  Heck it is an accomplishment in itself to get a team together, funding, etc. to run a full year with the Outlaws!

I think you'll find that those were years when they didn't have any rookies on tour.

He held off hard charging Dane Lorenc and Parker Price-Miller in the 1st quarter of the schedule.

It was amazing how similar his run for the ASCOC rookie of the year was in 2017 as well. He’s actually a pretty decent driver in  the one race I’ve seen him run. Just needs to not bite off more than the team can chew.
