So with the weird way the points broke down tonight and seeing Hodnett in 8th made me wonder the last time a driver won their qualifying night and did not directly lock into the A main, so I decided to try and look it up but got through about the past four years and quit since the historical documents didn't have point standings.

Bill W or any other Knoxville historians want to take a crack? I think it could easily happen this year.

462 should get him in pretty easily. I can’t see how 9 guys tomorrow amass more than 462.

Furthering my point, the cutoff at spot 16 was 457 last year and 452 in 2016.

Maybe easily wasn't the right word - if I had to bet I'd say 462 gets him in but I think he'll be close.

Hard to answer comprehensively in a sentence or two, but winning a prelim should at least get you comfortable in if not locking it in really.

Its stupid no doubt especially to give same amount of points for fast time as the A main win. The most fair way no doubt is line up heats by qualifying time and start the feature by heat finish.Top 4 each night lock into 8 car dash determines start of Saturday A main. That is the best and most fair way some fans may not like it but it is.

I think the way it is the heats need to be a few more laps to give the cars in the back a little more time to do something

What more could you ask for,Larson drawing last TT spot,Schatz drawing number 1 and missing tranfer spot in heat ,or Logan on his way to a great qualifing night and not weighing.Maybe I am wrong but those three things are hard to make up.The thing it proves is Schatz and Larson are just that good.Kerry still has one of the best chances as He did it the normal way of doing everything well . I think the format makes them race every race. Larsons showing in Osky was excellent and I know this would never happen but if the top guys started at the back and one who passes most cars gets the big check you would probably have same winner just not get checkered flag.

Settle down people you need to be fast every time you hit the track. The cream will rise and the best driver will take the top step of the podium on Saturday night. No flukes, no Michael Waltrips or Trevor Baynes. The cream shall rise.

The only problem with your format is it's boring as hell and leads to heat races with no racing and a boring feature that only gets interesting because of lapped traffic.   The format at Knoxville is absolutely fine, and it's a helluva lot better than the format the WoO runs.

Exactly what I was thinking. Line them straight up by time just to be fair and we will see little passing. Then it would just be another WoO show. Probably wouldn't attend as many nationals at that rate. At the end of the day the fans need to see a good show or it wouldnt exist. Look at the passing it created! If Greg wanted to have a better spot Saturday he should have timed better and been forced to actually pass cars but we're complaining that since he was a front row joe on a narrow track that he should be rewarded more? Come on.

This hasn't become the biggest sprint car race in the world because the format is stupid.

Not sure how long you've been around, but not that long ago the two qualifying nights locked in twenty cars for the Saturday A Main and not sixteen. So I doubt it has ever happened. Also had twenty locked in to the B Main, and ten locked in to the C Main back then. I think the deal changed when the Scrambles on Friday night were eliminated and they went to the current program. Keep in mind, there are drivers already locked in to the B that can come back on Friday with a chance to better themselves by running top four in Friday night's A Main.

Hodnet's night: Qualifies 17th. Starts 5th in his heat and finishes 3rd (passes Shane Golobic and Sawyer Phillips who qualified 27th and 37th respectively). Starts in the front row of the A main and finishes 1st.

I don't understand how he earned the right to start in front. Color me unimpressed.

It's called "inversion".....something the Outlaws don't understand, either.
