Weather Permitting Van Dyke Motorsports Prepares for World of Outlaws Action in Watsonville & Bakersfield

By Gary Thomas

Pleasant Grove, CA – March 21, 2018…The early season of competition with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series continues for Van Dyke Motorsports and Michael “Buddy” Kofoid with an outing at the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville on Friday, followed by a trip south to Bakersfield Speedway on Saturday.

Battling Mother Nature has been the largest obstacle for teams and fans in California over the first few weeks of the season. Tonight’s previously scheduled event at the Placerville Speedway was postponed until September, as a wet March has continued in the Golden State.

This past weekend however, saw one night get in at the Stockton Dirt Track as Kofoid made his second career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series start. After timing in 16th during Flight-B of qualifying he finished eighth in the final heat race, before winning the C-main by over a ½ lap. He then brought home a ninth-place finish in the Last Chance Showdown.

The main event was eventually captured by former Van Dyke Motorsports pilot Cory Eliason, who last season made the A-main at the Knoxville Nationals aboard the No. 5H Sprint Car. “I definitely want to offer my congratulations to Cory for winning last week,” 5H owner Harley Van Dyke said. “We’ve had some great success together in the past and it’s a special moment whenever you can get a win under your belt with the World of Outlaws.”

Van Dyke Motorsports’ current driver Kofoid is now looking ahead to more Outlaw competition at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville on Friday, a track he’s performed well at early in his career. Last season saw him capture both the prestigious Howard Kaeding Classic and the Johnny Key Classic at the quarter-mile. A year before that he finished runner up in the weekly 360 Sprint Car standings and became the youngest winner in track history.

This Saturday’s event with the “Greatest Show on Dirt” will then mark Kofoid’s first ever attempt at the Bakersfield Speedway. The 16-year-old looks forward to competing at a new track and to continue gaining laps against the best sprint car drivers on the planet.

"I always look forward to seeing new tracks whenever possible,” Kofoid commented. "We’re excited to compete with the World of Outlaws again this weekend. The weather has been frustrating for everyone, but we've been fortunate to still get some shows in. Qualifying is such an important part of the night with the Outlaws and that's something I'm going to focus on. It's tough to dig out of that hole if you get behind the eight-ball at the start of the night. We’ve been fighting some gremlins with the engine as well and are going to change power-plants this week."

The Ocean Speedway is a quarter-mile clay oval and is located on the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds at 2601 East Lake Ave, Watsonville, CA 95076. More info can be found at http://www.racepmg.com/oceanspeedway/

The Bakersfield Speedway is a one-third mile clay oval and is located at 5001 N Chester Ext, Bakersfield, CA 93308. More info can be found at www.bakersfieldspeedway.com

Van Dyke Motorsports and Michael Kofoid would like to thank Gary Silva Ranches, Lucas Oil Products, NAAKE Suspension and JRI West, T&T Trucking, Rafter V Farms, Hansen Machine Works, Sonoma Paint Center, North County Plastering and Kevin Sharrah Designs for their support this season.
