I'm blown away that more big names aren't registered and talking about this race. Last I saw there was only 30 some drivers registered (with a handful of those being local squirrels). I hope teams are just waiting on the weather... I know Sommers has announced and pushed back the driver registration "deadline" but is he really going to turn down entries after the deadline? I doubt it. Any driver who runs the nationals should be entered to run this race. With no outlaws being able to attend the chances of taking home some money are greatly increased. Before its all said and done I hope to see: Abreu, Bayston, Thorson, Saldana, Brian Brown, Kerry Madsen, Terry/Austin McCarl, Tatnell, Balog, Dietrich, Rahmer, Dewease, Hodnett... and all the other big knoxville and PA regulars I'm forgetting. Should be an awesome event.

Dietrich had Mansfield on his schedule, until the car OWNER, decided he wanted to race at Lincoln instead.  They run very good there, and stand a better shot at making money, versus driving 7hrs, burning fuel both ways.  Im not a PA guy, and honestly, the posse fans annoy the shit outta me, but i would hardly say Danny is afraid to come off the porch.

My initial reactions when this was announced were," did they think about other series and other possible tracks", but it may be impossible to schedule around everyone's dates.

Unless I missed this already why not work with the WOO or All Stars and get this on their schedule in future years?

Because Sommers is a promotor and in the business of making money. My guess would be he didnt want to pay either series to be the sanctioning body of this race. Maybe once the race is established and becomes an annual event(hopefully), he'll consider letting WoO or ASCoC serve as the sactioning body.

As for Dietrich, I agree he does get off the porch more than the rest and he stands better chance to win at Lincoln... but Mansfield is paying $2k to start, $7k for 6th place... You'd have to make the podium at Lincoln for $2k.

I think this event was on the calender before either the WoO or All Stars had their schedules out. And I think the All Stars have that date open, the WoO chose not to. That's fine with me. I'd just as soon see someone other than an Outlaw have a chance at the big bucks for a change. As for McCarl, Madsen and Brown, I doubt any of those three are really interested in the points at Knoxville, so unless sponsor commitments prevent them from entering, I expect they will be there. As for the top PA guys, not surprising if only a couple or so show up, although I do think there are several that could make a good run at the best paying positions.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

Yes the purse is top heavy, yes it might be far away, but with the WoO being in Texas that weekend, an upset is very possible.

If this race is a one time deal, the sprint car community will have no one to blame but themselves for not supporting this.

I've been looking around at websites and such. Here are a few bigger names that are coming.

Cory Eliason, Brock Zearfoss, Lance DeWease, Rico Abreu, Spencer Bayston. Brian Brown has it listed as tentative. I think Blaney, Haud, Kemenah and a few others will be there as well.

Why would any driver who enters the Nationals want to enter this race?

1)Knoxville Nationals has a $554,000 A Main which pays $10,000 to start, plus another $450,000 distributed over 3 other days of racing.  The A Main for this event is $200,500, with starting money of only $2,000.  That is a big difference.  While I get why everyone likes what he is doing, much like the Gateway event, there isn't enough compensation in the rest of this program to make it worth a team to leave their home area to run at Mansfield, which brings up point 2.  Gateway works because there is no competition in December, but by this date in April all the other tracks and series are up an running.

2)Race teams all have sponsors, and those sponsors pay to see their teams at Knoxville, and Lincoln etc.  The number of "national" teams is pretty limited that aren't running the Outlaws.  Sponsors expect to see their teams at Knoxville and Lincoln.  Which gets me to point 3.

3)If he really wants this to be a national event like it is being billed, he needs to move the date to September, or realistically the week after the National Open.  That would be a time where you could draw all the cars from Knoxville and PA.

The Knoxville Nationals is a special event that works because it pays gobs of money.  If you want to see a feild at Mansfield similar to Knoxville, then put up a $1,000,000 purse.  Chuck Brennan tried the same deal at Husets and got a limited field, and Tod Quiring is putting up close to $300,000 (plus paying the Outlaw ransome) to make the Jackson Nationals a premier event.

I'm not saying this race @ Mansfield compares to the Knoxville nationals in any way. But what I am saying is I'd expect roughly the same competition (minus the WoO due to schedule conflicts). Other than sponsor obligations, I don't see why anyone from PA or the Midwest wouldn't make the trip. Add in the handful of Cali teams loaded with funding (Roth, Rudeen, etc..).

Is the purse as great or anywhere close to the Nationals? Not really. But its damn good. For a weekend in April no other track is coming close to this payout. For people saying its top heavy... find me another show paying $20k for 2nd and $10k for 3rd other than the Royal, Knoxville, National Open... does any other race pay this well for 2nd and 3rd. I'm not trying to be an ass, truly curious as to what other 410 races pay $10,000 for 3rd place.

Huh?

Why would a team enter this race? Because it’s the 2nd largest winners purse in the sport? The total purse for The a Main is close if not larger than the Kings Royal and much larger than the National Open.

The purse is $12,800 more than the Kings Royal, but $37,200 less from 2nd place on back.  It is also $35,700 more than Jackson but $24,300 less from 2nd on back than the Jackson Nationals.  Kings Royal is 3 days as is Jackson.  Maybe that is the answer.   Of course those both have the World of Outlaw sanction so the tracks have a larger bill given the sanction fees, which this one does not have any.

I thought that I've seen somewhere that the Friday night program also pays pretty well and through the field.

If the weather forecast looks good for that weekend, you'll see plenty of cars and fans in attendance.

This will be my first big sprint car race. I'm hoping to see a great show. Not many sprints in West Virginia.

I think it will be pretty well supported but from what I am seeing and hearing among a lot of people would be described as cautious optimism. The event itself is still somewhat of a mystery as to who is coming, what is the format, how many, support division, is the track prep going to be better than last year, is the track crew going to be more organized than last year?

Personally, if it fails and is only a 1 race deal I don't think it will be the sprint car community to blame as much as it will be the track/promoter. They don't have any real track inside the state of Ohio to compete with, the All Stars are off that weekend so they won't lose cars for that, historically the Outlaws are always in Texas or that region that time of year so they are not losing/gaining cars with that either. No other tracks in Ohio are running 410s that weekend and while yes PA does have tracks running I think you would only be losing Deitrich for that. A lot of things are on their side and they will get a lot of people to attend I feel but the big thing is can they create a track that allows for a good race that people will be talking about the days following. It is a hard thing to put on an event like this but the next to impossible thing is doing it year after year and that part is on the track. The fans will pay once to support an event but if the racing and the event is subpar, then they will save their money when a lot of the fans that will come live in or around the state of Ohio. They have other options to see good racing such as Lets Race Two in May at Eldora, good local racing, Ohio Sprint Speedweek, Lou Blaney Memorial, Kings Royal week, a lot of people go to Knoxville, Attica on Labor day, 4 Crown, and Last Call for them all in October.

I think where a lot of us, especially from the midwest, are struggling with expectations that this race should be on par with the Knoxville Nationals and that cars should be towing in from Knoxville, Pennsylvania and everywhere to run it.  The reality is that it isn't the Knoxville Nationals, and while it is on par with the Kings Royal, it is also running against a Knoxville point night and a big show at Lincoln.  If this event lasts 20 year, I can see tracks trying to block this date off their schedule so drivers can run it, but I also don't expect a feild of 80 cars either.

This event is essentially the spring version of the Kings Royal.  The Kings Royal had 53 cars including 15 WoO teams.  That would result in a feild of 38 non outlaw teams.  I would say if the race has 45 cars, that would be a success!  Anything north of 50 would be very fantastic!

Everyone is excited, but I agree that cautious optimism and realistic expectations are needed.
