Blazing hot Kyle Hirst sweeps the Peter Murphy Classic at Thunderbowl Raceway to bring the familiar 1nz back to victory lane

By Gary Thomas

Tulare, CA – July 23, 2016…In a true storybook ending on Saturday night at Thunderbowl Raceway two-time King of the West Sprint Car Series champion Kyle Hirst was able to complete a weekend sweep of the third annual Peter Murphy Classic, taking home over $14,000 for his efforts at the double header.

Hirst spent the weekend driving the usual Roth Motorsports/ Tarlton & Son machine, but adorning a scheme identical to the final one Murphy had driven during the 2013 season. It was the third year in a row he had manned the familiar No. 1nz at the event, but the first time he was able to bring home the big money after coming oh-so-close before.

Adding in his two nights of main event winnings, plus fast time on opening night, the 28-year-old from Paradise, CA walks away with $14,500 total for the weekend.

“To be able to sweep the weekend at the Peter Murphy Classic is just incredible,” said an exuberated Hirst after executing some donuts on the front stretch. “I can’t thank Peter Murphy enough for all his hard work on this event. The money is an awesome thing, but to win this race driving the 1nz really makes it something special. Huge thank you to my crew chief Paul Baines, the entire Tarlton family & team, as well as Dennis & Teresa Roth for making it possible to drive this car. Thank you also to the fans that came out this weekend. It’s great to see a good crowd here supporting this event and we hope to see it continue growing each year.”

The main event started out with pole sitter Jason Meyers jumping into the lead, but things came to a halt immediately when the red flag came out for Chico’s Jonathan Allard, who got upside down in turn four. When getting back underway it was Meyers once again shooting into the top spot, as Hirst & Campbell’s Bud Kaeding battled for the second spot. Great racing was seen all throughout the field on the slicked off one-third mile clay oval, with fights for position occurring frequently.

A caution flag waved on lap 11 for a stalled Colby Copeland, but after that things were clean and green to the end. On the restart Hirst found life and made a wild move to get by both Kaeding & Meyers shortly after to grab the lead in exciting fashion. Hirst then had his way out front, with the attention turning to the battle between Meyers & Kaeding. A close and hard fought tussle was eventually won out by Kaeding, who then methodically tracked down Hirst as the race wound down.

With a few laps left Kaeding rapidly closed in while racing through traffic, but would come up just short, as Hirst took the checkered flag by 0.845 seconds. For Hirst it marked his third straight King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series victory and fifth overall this season, which matches a personal high that he set last year.

Kaeding’s runner up was the second night in a row he finished in the second position aboard the Williams Motorsports 0. Peter Murphy began his California racing career driving for car Morrie Williams from late 1997-2002. Meyers came home in third to score his best finish since returning the seat of the Meyers Constructors No. 14 a couple weeks back.

Fremont’s Shane Golobic had a great run in the feature to finish fourth aboard the Roth Motorsports No. 83jr, with Tyler Walker of Los Angeles also showing lots of speed to claim fifth in the Tri-C Manufacturing No. 3c. DJ Netto, Mitchell Faccinto, Justyn Cox, Bobby McMahan & Copeland rounded out the top-10.

Grass Valley’s Jason Statler got upside down coming to the checkered while running in the sixth spot and was given the $500 hard luck award. Jason Meyers won the Pole Shuffle, with the three 10-lap heat races during the night captured by Shane Golobic, Jonathan Allard and Justyn Cox. Fresno’s Gio Scelzi was the hard charger and highest finishing 360, earning $500 bonuses for each, meaning he goes home with $2100 for one night’s work. Results will be available at www.racepmg.com

The $500 longest tow award for the weekend went to Copeland's Bandit Racing team, who made the trip from Arizona.

A-main finish: Kyle Hirst, Bud Kaeding, Jason Meyers, Shane Golobic, Tyler Walker, DJ Netto, Mitchell Faccinto, Justyn Cox, Bobby McMahan, Colby Copeland, Giovanni Scelzi, Sean Watts, Jason Statler, Steven Kent, Scott Parker, Koen Shaw, Jarrett Soares, Michael Cunningham, Cori Andrews, Jonathan Allard, Kalib Henry, Craig Stidham

The King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series now heads for the Placerville Speedway next Saturday July 30 to cap the busy month of July.
