As I'm sure it is with other places, the car count in this class at Lawton has been minimal this year. We have averaged 10-12 cars most nights but last week only had 7. I know there are several cars out there because many different cars have come out. If we could just get them all to come at the same time it would be great!! Lawton has great facilities, a good group of drivers, and I think the best racing surface in the state. One thing also about Lawton/Lanny is that you are going to get paid and he will not lower the pay because of the car count. If you have one of these cars and want to come give Lawton a try, please come on out and have some fun with us! If anyone has any questions or needs anything, I and others would be happy to do what we can to help. Please make sure you take a look at the rules as they are consistent in checking cars in tech every night.

Hypothetically... "I would build/buy/bring a factory stock to race at Lawton if _______."

If anyone has a car sitting without a driver I would be willing to drive it to help the car count. Tracks all over are cutting classes or shutting down. Don't want to see this happen to Lawton.

we were planning on running the full season this year but a bad experiance the first night in tech didnt set well. BUT regardless it just made us realize that we were just burned out and the car has been setting every since needing about 3 hours of work to be on the track. it is for sale, the #44 car, built by flexi flyer 5804712945

Brad

ps, i would also encourage others to go run with these guys, the core drivers of this class are a good group

What happened in tech? Is this the car Andrew Downs drove? He was fast, I would love to see him come back. Come on, I'll save you a spot! I wish you would bring it back these last few nights. ...or let CHilliard drive it! I heard he is a real dandy!

Crazy how I look through programs in 2000 at SFS and see 5 heats 2 b's and an A in factory stocks/ street stocks whatever. Why has this class dropped off? They r very entertaining to watch.

You sat right alongside us and watched the factory stock class at SFS fall apart the final couple years. Maybe the class priced itself out - maybe a total and utter failure to tech........these generally seemed to be the two things griped about most, although maybe in hindsight it shouldn't be called griping if those that were doing it turned out to be right.

I think probably a combination of the two. It got to the point that it didn't matter if there were 28 cars or 10 - it was the same 4 or 5 that ran up front. Hell even with the invert it only took them a lap or two to come from the back lol. If SFS was still here - I really doubt that class would still be running - at least not as it was presented the final two seasons. But then again the Fairgrounds was not that different than many other tracks in that they were all in the beginning stages of what turned out to be, sadly, a very historical and precipitous decline.

There are many tracks that you could look at results five years ago and now........and it makes you wander what exactly could our complaints have been five years ago?? lol

Full body cars are personally my favorite to watch too. I think there are two major reasons this class is fading:

1. Economy faltering has hit this group the hardest. Price of gas to get car to track, pit passes, racing fuel, etc going up put people have lost jobs or not making any more money.

2. Evolution of the limited/sport modified.

Of course there are other factors but I think these are the most likely.

Final night of factory stocks @ SFS, I believe 9 cars started a 15 lap feature & maybe 5 finished.

Does the fact that there aren't any rear wheel drive cars being made by Detroit factor into the equation?

I've often wondered what the mini-stock class was going to do if they didn't allow front wheel drive cars? There aren't any new Pintos, Vegas, Mustang IIs or Celicas being made. Rear wheel drive cars aren't readily available like they were.

What chassis are you supposed to use? The '73 to '78 GM Chevelles are gone. The '73 to '78 Monte Carlos are gone. The '79 to '88 Monte Carlos are gone. Heck, there aren't that many Patrick Coker "Big Black Cadillacs" left.

Junkyard classes like factory stock, pure stock and mini stock depend on an ample supply of cheap cars and that supply is drying up (just like my yard.)

If you want to keep rear wheel drive stock race cars, you may have to consider an S-10/Ranger class with stock V-6 engines... Oh no! I said V-6!

I think this is certainly a factor as well. The cash-for-clunkers program probably took out a big part of the little that was left. I would say though, there are many cars just sitting in fields or barns that could be put back on the track. The problem is they have little value. I cringe at the thought of selling mine. I figure if I ever do, I would be much better off parting it out to a bunch of limited modified people (lol).

I have seen several 3rd and 4th generation Camaros racing in Arkansas. This could be the new wave if indeed there is another. I would love it to continue but I have my doubts. The limited modified class is slowly killing the stock car classes. Heck it's even taken drivers out of the A mods and sprints. I can't say I blame any of them for switching though.
