ARIZONA HALL OF FAME VINTAGE CLASSIC
by Windy McDonald
Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria Arizona and the Arizona Motorsports Hall of Fame have joined forces to stage the 11th running of the Hall of Fame Vintage Classic and will also have the induction ceremonies for the 2010 inductees into the Arizona Motorsports Hall of Fame. The race, scheduled for October 23rd, will feature the American Sprint Car Series, non winged Modified Midgets and Desert Dwarf Cars.
The induction ceremonies will take place during intermission just before the main event for Vintage Cars from throughout the Southwest. The cars, some built and raced in the thirties will basically put on exhibition races since the cars do not have the necessary safety features of today’s racers.
The Vintage cars will also be present Friday night when the Southwest Region American Sprint Car Series and their winged sprinters headline the show. The winged Modified Midgets and the Dwarf Cars will also be on the card.
Several of the Vintage cars will be on display on the main concourse each night.
The winged sprints will be headed by Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces, NM. However Ziehl hold a scant 35 point lead over Arizona’s John Gaston as of this writing. The winged sprints have six races before they visit Canyon for only the second time this year. Former World of Outlaws star Johnny Herrera won the May 22nd feature at Canyon.
Ziehl has scored two feature wins and so has Herrera. Other winners have been Gaston, Joshua Hodges, Joshua Williams and Canyon’s own Dalten Gabbard.
Charles Davis, Jr. of Buckeye, AZ heads the points standings in the Discount Tire Canyon Region American Sprint Car Series. Davis, a three time Arizona Sprint Car champion has a commanding 146 point lead over Jeremy Sherman who is trying for a fifth straight driving title. Mike Martin is ten points behind Sherman and R.J. Johnson is another 30 back. Davis has won four of the nine races run this year with one of his wins coming at Canyon. He is the only driver with more than one win. Others have been Dave Darland, one of only five drivers to score championships in all three of USAC main divisions, Sherman, Martin and Johnson
