Does anybody remember or have any pictures of Steve Schultz? He was a driver back in the late 60's (?) and 70's based out of Chillicothe, MO. He used to run at Topeka, Eagle, Knoxville, and other midwest races. Also ran at Eldora after he moved out there; got his brain scrambled in a wreck and ended up committing suicide. My dad was on his pit crew before he got sent to Vietnam, but we only have one picture of him and that was with him driving for someone else. If anybody can help, that would be awesome! Trying to get something put together for Father's Day for my dad. Thanks!

I can remember Steve runnin with USAC back in the late 70s maybe early 80s.A photographer that shot pics back then and still see him at some tracks john mahoney would be a good bet to see if he can fix you up.Not sure about the spelling of his name but he is from the Indy area.Hope this helps you some.

I certainly remember the name. What car (s) are you looking for?

I seem to remember him driving either (or both) the red 86 car out of Columbia, Mo, or possibly the red #2 car that Saldana won the Nat's in after Joe left it.

Am I close?

Let me check with my dad and see what number he ran when my dad was with him. He tells this great story of Steve hopping out on US 36 out of Chillicothe at 3 a.m. one morning in the sprinter to see if the motor they had just fixed was working right. Dad said he hopped on his motorcycle to follow him and was running 145 mph when he lost sight of the sprinter in the distance lol!!!

Hopefully this message is better late than never.

I've recently been scanning some old photos and ran across a couple of Steve Schultz's car taken Aug. 13, 1972 at the Wappello County Fair in Eldon, IA. This was an IMCA event.

If you're still interested, let me know and I'll post whatever else I find along the way.

I knew Steve briefly in the mid 70's after he moved to Indy. He was a fabricator for Eldon Rasmussan and drove a Shores car for Lowell Sauder out of Archbold, Ohio. I got to know him at Shores shop ,as that was where Steve took care of the car.

That car was a red 35 as memory serves.

I don't remember what year he crashed, but Steve probably would have been better off had he not survived it.

The car I remember him driving around here, before he moved east to pursue USAC, was also a red 35. I personally don't remember him in the red 86, but he very well could have driven it. A LOT of different drivers drove that car over the years.

My books, High Plains Thunder and Big Car Thunder, Volume II, have a number of photos of Steve. Big Car Thunder is available from the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Speedway Motors, while High Plains Thunder is available only from Speedway Motors.

Steve Schultz was originally from Sedalia Mo and he raced around here at places like Capital Speedway in Holts Summit, Sportsman's Speedway in Marshall and the Fairgrounds tracks in Sedalia.

I have several photos of Steve Schultz from the 1960's that were taken at these tracks.

1 taken in 1966 when drove a white # 73 "B class Super Modified" at Marshall Mo.

1 taken in 1967 when he drove a white #74 "B class Super Modified" carrying the checkers after a win at Marshall Mo.

1 taken in 1968 at Capital Speedway when he drove the Nu Way Cafe sponsored #73 which was an "A class Super Modified" with fuel injection.

1 taken in 1969 with Steve standing beside a blue #99 sprint car at Capital Speedway. This was his first true sprint car.

After he moved to Chillicothe Mo is when he started venturing out more and running at Knoxville and other Midwest area tracks. Later on, he moved to Indy and started his USAC career. Steve still has family here in Sedalia.

Think he might have been a school teacher. Always talked to him when he came to Knoxville and other places I saw him race. Was a real nice guy who was a racer.

Found this article in one of my scrap books. It was originally published in the D.M. Register on Aug. 11, 1971. Sorry the quality isn't better.
