Larry Rice passed away from cancer-

Indianapolis- Former 1978 Indy 500 co-rookie of the year (with Rick Mears), Larry Rice has passed away after a long battle with cancer.

Rice was 1973 USAC National Midget Champ and the 1977 and 1981 Silver Crown Champion.

He competed in 2 Indy 500's, 1978 and 1979. 11th place in '78 and 23rd in '79

After hanging up his helmet he worked for ESPN on "Thursday Night Thunder" in the '90s , and was inducted in the National Midget Hall of Fame in 1993.

Little more on Larry-

Gary "Preacher" Patterson took to calling him 'Rice-A-Roni' and the name stuck for a while.

Larry once noted that his first USAC midget ride was at Lawton, Ok in 1968, I may have this wrong, but that's the way I remember it being told.

I got to watch him at Lawton in 1985 when the USAC vs CRA swing came through.

The A Main in Heaven just got alittle harder to win and alot funner to watch.

Win as if you are use to it.And lose as if you enjoyed
it for a change. Its hard to get to the top and alot
harder to stay there.

I always wondered why Lanny has not tried the Non Wing deal at Lawton again, CRA guys use to rave about the place when interviewed, guess it just won't ever be again, but those Wingless races in the 80's was very good stuff.

Larry Rice , Bob Jenkins , Dave Despain they were a great trio for Thursday Night Thunder back in the 90's, they sure helped launch a few careers with those broadcasts. Watched that show on ESPN religiously every Thurs. night.

Always wondered why Speed and Versus have not figured it out that they should show races on a weeknight, like Thurs. Night Thunder did and not on Weekends when you lose some of your audience that are at their local short track watching or racing. Still wonder why they cannot figure that out.

To get those guys out here in the '80s, the CRA offered double points and maybe tow money to make it happen. We were really Lucky to have seen those guys from Ascot as well as Indy compete at Lawton and a few other places.

R.I.P. Larry Rice. Story from the home town paper, The Paper of Montgomery County, Crawfordsville, IN. http://www.thepaper24-7.com/main.asp?SectionID=23&SubSectionID=22&ArticleID=20500

Larry was driving one of the cars below at I-70 in the late 70's. He had seat time in both cars. I think this day he was in the #18, but I've been wrong before and the memory is kind of foggy.
