Hi. We will be in Casa Grande Az in Feb. Only racing I found was Feb 13 in Peoria. Appears to be just a weekly local show and that's fine. Just wondering if it a decent place, worth the drive and time and money. Any must do's or must don'ts at the track or near by for the afternoon? We don't go to bars but any cool restaurants or must see things.

Thanks Rod

It's not a bad track, it's just waaaaayyy out there. It's at the Northwest corner of the Phoenix area, and about 100 miles or so from Casa Grande. For what you are going to watch there that weekend, I'd say it's not worth the drive.

If you happen to still be in Casa Grande on March 2nd, they are running SW USAC sprint cars at the Fair Grounds that night.

Google says 1 hr travel time. Either way thank you. Leaving Feb 21. I know I should plan Florida trip then I'd have the opposite problem.

Feb 13 at Canyon Speedway Park isn't a weekly show, that's a stop on the AZ Mod Tour.  There will be a lot of heavy hitters in the IMCA Modifed and SportMod ranks.  Should be a really good show!  The tour is actually in Casa Grande at Central Arizona Speedway the 10-11 and starts at Arizona Speedway on the 8-9.  Following Canyon, it moves on to USA Raceway in Tucson the 15-16.

If you happen to visit to Canyon, make sure you swing by Desert Donuts.  Made to order donuts and they are incredible!  I highly recommend trying "The Beast".  It has hot sauce as one of the toppings, which is a strange topping for a donut, but it's really good.

I've tried to contact that USA Raceway. The  number I get from Google doesn't work. When I go to the website I get a pest control site. Does anyone know of a working website or phone number contact for USA Raceway?

Please and thanks.

If you reach out to Arizona Speedway, I believe they can give you information.

Hello Rod,

Our ASCS schedule has not been released yet, but we are racing (Winged 360's) at Canyon Speedway Park's "CSP Meltdown" on February 22nd, and 23rd.

As far as USA Raceway goes, it does not have a schedule out yet that I know of, but is planning on running a few (5-7) shows this year. I know that March 5th the WoO will be at USA Raceway in Tucson and March 6th they'll be at Arizona Speedway in Queen Creek....

March 2nd is the USAC Southwest Series (Wingless 410's) season opener at Central Arizona Speedway.

Hope this helps.....

I winter in Arizona I go to Canyon at any opportunity. Well worth the trip out there to see it.i just went to the entire Wild West shootout at Arizona Speedway.  If you do happen to go to Canyon Speedway when you enter the race track through the main grandstand go straight up to the left I’ll be sitting up at the top well recommended at least go check it out while you’re there

Isn't this the track that had the WoO winter series on TV like 25 years ago?

WTF is the deal with all of these tracks closing?

The economy is as good as its been in 20 years and tracks all over the country are dropping like flies.

Why is this happening???

The 2019 Racing Season Set On Hold At Canyon Speedway Park

Doug Gabbard,
February 15, 2019 Peoria, AZ;

...

Unforseen circumstances have lead me to make one of the toughest decisions I've ever made!

We are going to suspend racing at the oval until further notice.

I'd rather pull the plug prior to sanctioned point racing begins and while we are still early off into the season.

With Cocopah Speedway in Yuma, Mohave Valley Raceway combined with tracks in Tucson, Casa Grande and Apache Junction, I feel there is plenty of opportunities available to the dirt track community.

People may choose to point fingers as to why I've decided to move in this direction but there is nobody at fault.

Anybody involved with the racing facility, I ask that you give me a couple weeks to field questions and resolve any issues or concerns that may arise.

I'm unsure at this time what the future holds but I can say that leaving the staff at CSP in limbo is my biggest concern. Please know that Kristi and I respect each and everyone of you!

For the past few years, rising CPI has negated the increases in the economy.  As well, tracks are facing escalating costs of insurance and other fixed expenses.  However, one of the biggest reasons may be the quality of racing is declining with escalating costs of racing.  Tracks are experiencing less competive racing,  fans do not want to spend their discretionary income on 16 car fields, with 10 cars being back markers.

2019 SEASON TO RESUME IN MARCH AT CSP

Doug Gabbard, Peoria, Ariz. (Feb 19, 2019) – Our racing community is so remarkable when it comes down to it. Teams may be as competitive as they can be on the track, but off the track, the amount of kindness and generosity extended to my family was simply overwhelming! I can tell you first-hand that our racing community in Arizona is as strong as it has ever been.

I would like to address personally some of the many questions sent to us directly as well as publicly placed. The temporary closure of Canyon was just that; temporary. Our press release putting the season “on hold” last week was never meant to be an obituary of CSP. A boiling point was reached for myself, my family and our staff. This was not due to social media, low car counts or financial issues as assumed by many. This was due to a look inwards, at the current state of our facility.

After the first few races of the year, I saw clearly that changes needed to be put into place. I made the decision to take the time necessary to improve what needed to be improved upon. The time for waiting was over. A few instances of the changes taking place would be anywhere from the surface of our racetrack down to the lighting and sound in the pits, among other things.

When we first made this announcement, the expected down time was much greater than what we are currently facing. The sheer amount of effort and time needed to take on these tasks were enough to assume the worst when we initially looked into how many races we would miss. However, as mentioned at the beginning of this letter, the community came out swinging. With the help of so many people, we now expect to be back in action for our Spring Showcase, possibly our biggest event of the year.

I want to make it clear that our number one goal is to put on an entertaining product for our outstanding fans. Beyond this, we want our drivers to feel we respect them enough to give them not just a facility they can be proud of, but a facility they feel safe at. For those reasons, we thought it was in our best interest to go dark. We would like to apologize to those who had an event cancelled during this down time. We hope you all will be able to attend or participate in a race at our track soon so you can see the results of our hard work during this time we took off.

I've got to extend my personal gratitude to our leaders like Steve Kapaun, Jim Stennard, Steve Moriarty, Chris Kearns and Jonah Trussel. These guys all stepped up to the plate for us. We are very lucky to have each and every one of them representing racing in the valley of the sun.

Other community members like Tony Steele, Dan Steffey, Scott Batten, Andy Critser and John Brinkley are all instrumental in our immediate return to action.

On behalf of our amazing staff at CSP, we look forward to our 2019 Spring Showcase Season Opener featuring the Amsoil USAC SW/CRA non-wing 410ci sprint cars, IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Northern Sport Mods, IMCA Stock Cars and Winged AZ Micro Sprints on the big track.

Thank you all for reaching out during this time. We hope to see you soon.

- Doug Gabbard
