I was talking to some musician friends of mine from Akron, Ohio & when I mentioned sprint cars, they told me about this Ohio musician who recorded a whole album of songs about sprint car racing. This is the first one I listened to so far, but just look up "Johnny & the Thunderheads" on Youtube for more. He left us for that "big dirt track in the sky" a while ago..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKy5Ddz4ADw&list=PLSM4lhfa3d2NXB8t7BSZSrN-KKagGu6h0&index=2

The last one I posted, "USAC'n" might appeal more to IOW fans. He's a "Hoseheads Appropriate" one, "Ohio Speedweek Traveling Song"

Yes, its country, not everyone's cup of tea, I'm sure. I don't think he ever got rich on this album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goTeMNFBXUM&list=PLSM4lhfa3d2NXB8t7BSZSrN-KKagGu6h0&index=4

Seems like many years ago I heard a Mel McDaniel song that was about dirt tracking.   I'll have to do some research and see if I can find it.

Didn't take too long to find it.    Mel McDaniel had a song called "Stand On It" that was about dirt tracking, or at least the first verse was anyway.    My memory is better than I thought, my wife ain't puttin' me in a home just yet!

They're kind of corny, IMHO, but I thought I'd mention it....

My 2 favorites are:

- "Won't Leave the Porch Blues"

- "Port Surface Serenade" (co-written and sung by BStrawser)

Just kidding!

Not sprint car music, but here's a couple of my favorite racing songs:

Faster by George Harrison about Formula 1

Speedway at Nazareth by Mark Knopfler (this version featuring Emmylou Harris) about IndyCar

Unrelated, sort of.  Look at the album cover for Huey Lewis "Sports" and there's a picture of a Sprint Car hanging at the bar in background.  I have my father's old vinyl records and for some reason my now 4 year old got a kick out of listening to Huey Lewis when he was younger.  Haha.

Victory Lane sports complex in Glendale, AZ has an actual Sprint car hanging above the bar.

Interesting.   I think I've got that album somewhere.   Gotta go see if I can dig it out.   IMO any 4 year old should dig "I Want A New Drug"!

Rapid Roy (that stock car boy) by Jim Croce

Check that one out.  I know it says stock car, but he talks about dirt track racing in the song.  Gotta love Croce!

Roy Hall was an early pioneer of stock car racing in the south.  He and Lloyd Seay (drivers), Red Vogt (head wrench), and Raymond Parks (car owner) were the first "team" in the late 30's and early 40's in and around the south.  Based out of Georgia. A great book to read about moonshine and the early forgotten period of stock car racing is "Driving With the Devil" by Neal Thompson. I highly recommend it. A lot of excellent stories in there. They talk about Vogt's all night garage in Georgia helping to soup up the shiners cars, Parks' WWII service at the Battle of the Bulge, Seay getting shot and killed by a cousin.....

I know it's not about sprint cars, but its racing on dirt. Give it a try.

Haha, we typically skip that song and opt for "The Heart of Rock n Roll" and "Heart and Soul." Haha.
