Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner. With tracks closing at an u comfortable rate in recent years, I think we should possibly delete this entire thread. Through my own choice, due to work, family, etc, 21 years ago I moved from what was a sprint car hotbed to a sprint car desert from SE South Dakota to the North central. One can argue now that southeast SD, without Husets or I90, etc isn't a hotbed anymore and I see Aberdeen has 2 sprint shows this summer so I have some reprieve. But on any given weekend I'd be pretty happy to have a "worst" sprint car track within an hour of me let alone 4 hours from me

Amen to the post above. I'm in SE VA. I'm excited that I get to see a handful of 305 run in NC about 45 minutes away twice this year. Stand are a bit rickety, lighting so so and I'm pretty sure it's highly unsafe in turns one and two, but it is heaven when I'm there. After that, it's all fenders and mostly pavement stuff around me.

Mods - please delete this thread. There is enough bitching on other threads without this. Maybe if someone had a humerous story about a bad experience, that might make for a good thread but no reason to kick tracks and promoters on a public message board.

Valley Speedway
Grain Valley, MO
for awhile they let concrete trucks clean out in the parking lots so it was a hazard to drive onto the property. that has been fixed.
they surrounded the track and property in dilapidated single wide trailers, really cemented the whole "DONT METH WITH MISSOURI" image
horrid facilitys aside
I have personally seen them throw a yellow and put 3 laps cars in front of the leader for the restart
I have personally been handed a winners trophy for running second place a straightaway behind the actual leader. (which I handed over and our series made the correction for points and pay)
its like they've never seen a race happen and decided to buy a track and havent the slightest clue how to run a race. this facility uses transponders btw.... Ive seen little improvements over the years on how they do things.
the only plus is the location its 30-45 minutes from anywhere in the KC metro area so thats nice.
they get my vote

I'd have to say that the overall worst track for sprint cars is Thunder Valley in Marion, SD. The track is always as hard as asphalt. The straights seem like they're a quarter mile long and the corners- it's like they're non existant! On the whole the darn place doesn't do justice for winged sprints with soft tires and lots of stagger.
The stands are OK. The pits are quite a ways from where the cars pull off the track. Don't get me started on the track lighting! Those guys are always flashing the lights: red, yellow, green. And the flagman- nowhere to be seen! The concessions I hear are good, but that doesn't make up for the rest.
In conclusion, I don't think there is any good reason to run sprint cars at Thunder Valley. I guarantee that anybody who has been there would agree- guarantee!!!!

I like the Gritty Old tracks, and was looking for some places / hole in the wall type places to go this summer. Thought people would have some funny stories about things that happened at certain tracks, etc.
Wasn't intended to be a "bitching thread" But since people are bitching about bitching I'll delete it. Love Sprint Cars, and racing and why I have done it for years.

Man, this place makes me laugh. I bet a sizeable portion of the people requesting this to be deleted are also the same type to call people "snowflake" when in disagreement.

Lol Murphy, I started reading and legitimately thought "There used to be a dirt track at Thunder Valley?"
Thanks for the laugh!
In all seriousness, Lake County Speedway takes my vote. Place was a disaster, fencing was terrible, stands were rickety, etc. But that was also our favorite place to race back in the day. I would give about anything to have that racetrack open again, even in the condition it was. My favorite/worst racetrack of all time!

Worst concessions I have seen are at Spoon River Speedway (Lincoln Speedway in IL is a close 2nd). It is not the quality of the food that is the issue, it is the logistics of their setup that creates ungodly long lines at both places.
They are both good tracks, so when I go there, I get dinner en route to the track.

Generally my worst experiences have been at tracks that don't normally run Sprints. I have found a few places I won't go back, some are gone now. I won't call anyplace out because they're near my location and mentioning them by name doesn't serve any useful purpose.

Here's a link to a map of Thunder Valley if anyone doubts what I'm saying.....
I went to Lake County maybe a dozen times. The place had character and racing....but not much else to write home about. The trick was to sit upwind from the bathrooms, but then I can remember when Hartford had that problem. Now nobody has to worry about stinky bathrooms at either place.

Lake County Speedway....loved that place like no other! Went to my first race of any kind there. From probably 1989 til 1996 when we moved I probably only missed a handful of races there. Took pics for the paper, wrote stories for the paper there, pit crew member there and he'll, I wouldn't have met my wife of 24 years if not for that joint. All of the above was true about the facilities , but damn that track was FAST and normally in great shape. Our low buck team could make tires last several shows there and be competitive, but only a night at Husets sometimes paved oval! Sprint racers that were legends there...Fran Bruns, Kenny Hansen, Chuck McGillvary (old man is still wheelin it!), Rick Dump, Jon Barger, Gary Zitterich, Cliff Koidahl , the Ellingsons and many many more. 1996 when Wolfie was running his IMCA car in his comeback and was there on a regular basis was awesome.

I went there once for USAC & enjoyed it.
Sounds like you have raced there, so I'm sure you know better about how they run it....
