1. The NASCAR flag man wore a helmet. 40 years & 200 tracks & is never seen this before. The modified flag man did not wear a helmet.

2. ATF agents strolling around with what presume were drug sniffing dogs.

I guess number 3 would not be a "first" though.

1. Did the ATF agents have to buy tickets?
2. Did the drug sniffing dogs have to buy tickets?
3. Why were the dogs sniffing drugs? A cold beer would seem more appropriate for man's best friend.
4. Did the dogs enjoy the show?

1 & 2 is a no. They went in thru the passout gate as I was leaving without showing tics.

3 , I would guess sniffing drugs because it'd take something stronger than alcohol to be able to endure a whole evening of that show

4  , im guessing yes.

My buddy tried to give me a free ticket two years ago and I told him no thanks, I'll just go see the real racers a few days prior to the trucks when the World fo Outlaws are there. We went to the Silver Cup at Lernerville the night before instead and saw better racing.

As it relates to your first post, I think Nascar started having their flagmen/women where helmets after one of them almost got hit by flying debris a few years ago (probably at Talladega or Daytona). So in order to make the flagpeople feel safer, standing in maybe a 6-8sqft box with no where to run, Nascar in their usual conventional wisdom said we will put helmets on them to protect them just in case a peice of debris or in some cases a car flying at 160+mph hits them.

For those that think this is strange, check out Terry McCarl's twitter from last night.   Can't say I disagree with his logic.  very dangerous for our flagmen given that a car can flip up at the flagstand on any given lap.

I'd rather see the flagman with a helmet than one seriously injured.

Yeah, I don't understand why anyone would think that a flagman wearing a helmet is a bad thing. Of course, it should be an option for them, and be their choice. But making an issue out of it is silly.

Sounds like a good idea to me.  The track should make the appropriate safety equipment available to the flagger.

Didn't Doug Clark get hit with something about 4-5 years ago at the Nationals?  I recall that he actually came down out of the stand for a couple races while he got a few bandaids put on his head.

I believe Justin got hit with the side panel off of Dustin Selvage's car during one of the weekly shows a few years ago.

I wasn't making an issue or saying it was a bad idea.... I merely stated I'd never saw it before. Since I ride a motorcycle to about 95% of the races I go too I have a helmet with me and have been known to wear it in the stands if the conditions warrant

Holy cow!  I've been pelted with dirt clods at the races but never felt I needed a helmet for protection.......Although, if you were to boo the favorite driver winning at most local tracks, you might want the helmet to protect your noggin from beer cans.

I unfortunately had some photos of the Flagman being killed at the home opener at Fremont, OH about 20 years or so ago.  Ironically, I was standing in the middle of the infield with the promoter putting the show on, turned over the pics to him for court and destroyed the negs as I did with all my fatals.  To this day, in almost 68 years on the planet it is the only dead person I have ever seen as I foolishly walked across the track and looked into the stands to see the fallen Flagman to see if he survived...

Believe me I'd rather went lernerville and would have if not for the 5 hr ride home and having to get up at 4:30 am.

Did they charge the ATF to setup a souvenir trailer?
