USAC/CRA SPRINT CARS RETURN TO PERRIS FOR “GLENN HOWARD CLASSIC”
By Lance Jennings

SEPTEMBER 16, 2015... Fresh off the “2nd Annual California Sprint Week,” the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Cars will return to Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday, September 19th. Promoted by Don Kazarian, “8th Annual Glenn Howard Classic" will also showcase the PAS Senior Sprints, PAS Young Gun Sprints, and the California Lightning Sprints. The spectator gates will open at 5:00pm and racing at "America's Premier Dirt Track" will start at 7:00pm. For more event information, visit the track’s website at www.perrisautospeedway.com or call 951.940.0134.

Saturday's event honors Glenn Howard, considered by many in the industry as a "racer's racer." Throughout his involvement in racing, Glenn served as a crew member, driver, car owner, sponsor, official, and business man. Howard's So-Cal Performance was recognized as a major parts supplier to racers across the globe for many years. In 1993, Glenn became the first president of the Sprint Car Racing Association (SCRA) and helped to build the foundation of the nationally respected club. After his term was over, Howard remained active in motorsports until his passing in September 2007. Kazarian, Perris Auto Speedway, and the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series are proud to honor Glenn's memory with the annual event.

The “8th Annual Glenn Howard Classic" will be the 178th Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car race at Perris Auto Speedway. Dating back to March 6, 2004, the “Southern California Home of Major League Sprint Car Racing” has been the “home track” for the series. In the previous seven races at Perris, action has been dominated by “The Demon” Damion Gardner and Richard Vander Weerd. Gardner has scored four triumphs, including the last three main events and Vander Weerd has three victories. “The Demon” leads all USAC/CRA drivers with 36 “home track” wins and Nic Faas holds the 1-lap track record of 15.833, set on February 25, 2012.

NOTICE TO COMPETITORS: Per USAC/CRA rules, all fuel-injected 410 and 360 powered sprint cars must run the Hoosier 105/16 Medium Right Rear Tire and all four corners must be Hoosier. Cars must pass a tech inspection and one-way radios are mandatory for drivers. The series charges a $25 entry fee to all competitors and transponder rentals are extra. USAC/CRA follows the USAC National Series Rule Book, which can be found online at www.usacracing.com/assets/files/rules/2015/Appendix_C_National_Sprint_2015.pdf.

Entering the eighteenth point race of the season, Mike Spencer of Temecula, California has a 42-point advantage. Driving Ron Chaffin’s #50 Grubstake Mini Storage / Madera Produce Maxim, Spencer earned his first victory of the year at Petaluma on September 7th. Currently ranked second on the USAC/CRA win list with thirty-six feature wins, the five-time champion will be looking to increase his point lead with his second “Howard Classic” triumph.

Concord, California’s “The Demon” Damion Gardner is second in the chase for the championship. Piloting Mark Alexander's #4 Scott Sales Company / Weld Racing Spike, Gardner earned his sixth victory of the year at Hanford’s “Jim Turner Memorial” on September 11th. The three-time champion leads all drivers with sixty-three career USAC/CRA wins and will have his sights on his claiming second “Howard Classic” at Perris.

Richard Vander Weerd of Visalia, California sits third in the USAC/CRA point chase. Racing the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Stone Gate Development Maxim, Vander Weerd has four feature wins on the season. The former USAC West Coast Sprint Car Champion is currently tied for 17th on the series win list and will be looking to add the “Howard Classic” to his resume.

Yorba Linda, California’s Austin Williams has climbed to fourth in the USAC/CRA point standings. Driving Jack Jory’s #2 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike, Williams scored third last Saturday night at Santa Maria. The 2009 Rookie of the Year is in a nine-way tie for twenty-first on the USAC/CRA win list and will be looking for his first win at Perris Auto Speedway.

Jake Swanson of Anaheim, California is fifth in the championship point chase. Piloting Tom & Laurie Sertich’s #92 Huntington Beach Glass & Mirror / Ram-Bull Racing Victory, Swanson led four laps at Calistoga on September 6th before scoring third at the checkered flags. Jake will have his sights on making the “Howard Classic” his first USAC/CRA feature win.

Currently eleventh in the point standings, “The Flying Peanut” Parker Colston of Lake Elsinore, California leads the chase for Rookie of the Year honors. “Thunder” Tommy Malcolm, Anthony Lopiccolo, and Michael Curtis are also in contention.

Among the other drivers expected to be in action are Brody Roa, Matt Mitchell, “The Cadillac” Cody Williams, Logan Williams, Jace Vander Weerd, Chris Gansen, A.J. Bender, “The Bear” Jeremy Ellertson, Terry Schank Jr., and more.

Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in Perris, California.
