Tennessee National

Hemby Bridge, NC – I’m sitting at the shop at 9PM on Sunday night trying to figure out what I could have done better…

Everything leading up to my first adventure to Tennessee National Raceway in Hohenwald, TN went according to plan. I let Seth drive the first four hours of this sixteen hour road trip. I didn’t think he’d make it to the other side of Knoxville, but apparently Knoxville is a whole lot closer than we thought. After the driver switch, fellow truckers would inform us through various light signals that something was wrong with the F350 I was currently maintaining at a high rate of speed.

No trailer lights… In the middle of nowhere… Nearest hotel fifteen miles away. So, off we were to the five star facility known as the Economy Inn. No heat, no remote control, and worse, no Fox News… The humanity!

Saturday morning came along and so did a truck stop repairman moonlighting as an open wheel modifier. It took him three minutes to fix our problem, 15 minutes to tell us how crazy we were for driving sprints, and eleven dollars to break even…

Once we hit the back roads of Tennessee just South of Nashville, it became a guessing game. Every big ass house on a big ass farm protected by a big ass fence created a little curiosity. Did we just drive by Alan Jackson’s place or Bocephus… If you don’t know who Bo is, quit reading right now. You don’t deserve the privilege.

TNR finally appeared on our right and like always, Terry Gray beat us there. We parked as close to him as we could and engaged in intimidating conversation. “It’s Terry, what do we say?” “I don’t know, just try not to sound like a dumbass!”

A four hour nap delay would find us rushing to the drivers meeting, engine warm up, and hot lap line up. Newly informed crew chief would constantly remind me that everyone was going faster than hell. I’m glad he thought I was going faster than hell too...

Leading up to the race and leading down from the race are always the best stories. So I’ll tell you this about the race itself.

TNR is an awesome race facility. The town of Hohenwald is a great American town. It was one of the proudest moments I’ve ever been as an American because everyone “EVERYONE” stood for the anthem and prayed. The track was prepared awesomely. The USCS drivers raced so hard and left everything on the track. I missed set up after set up (never pushed that hard in my life). Seth and I never figured it out, but we are a whole lot closer than we were 36 hours ago. We started 12th and finished 10th, but only because of other’s bad luck. I already have next year’s setup downloaded on Google Chrome. Can’t wait for another shot.

Lastly… sometimes another driver needs a shout out in my article. Nick Snyder won at Travelers Rest a few weeks ago. Whenever I see the 116 nose wing around me I know I’m in for a fun battle. He’s always raced me cleaned, and I’d like the think I’ve raced him clean. This dude put a slide job on Anthony that took my breath away on the last lap. No doubt in my mind he has a few more wins coming this year…

We made it back to the race shop at 10AM this morning… I was going to try and make it to church but Seth accidently took my keys with him and I had to walk all the way home… Asshole.

PS… Thanks Seth for all your hard work. Couldn’t have done it without you.

Talked with a lady who works, works, works at exercise class.  She says she only listens to NPR.  Try it for a month. "You're gonna like the podium."
