NUNES WINS SECOND LIGHTNING SPRINT CAR RACE IN A ROW!
(Placentia, CA, April 28, 2015) For the second race in a row, Kingsburg’s Doug Nunes defeated Bobby Michnowicz to win the California Lightning Sprint Car main event at “ESPN Radio Night at The Races” at the Bakersfield Speedway last Saturday. Two weeks earlier Nunes beat Michnowicz to the checkered flag at the Ventura Raceway.
After qualifying seventh and winning his heat, Nunes, who was only making his second start with the CLS this year, started on the outside of the front in the 20-lap main on the 1/3 of a mile banked clay oval. Once the green flag waved, Nunes beat San Diego’s Chris Dickey to the first turn and proceeded to lead every inch of the way.
Fort Irwin’s Jeff Dyer, who started directly behind Nunes in the main, gave the initial chase, but by the fourth circuit Nunes was a full straight away in front. Michnowicz, who started in the fifth spot, moved up challenge Dyer for second on the fifth lap and took the lead with a turn two slider on the sixth go around. However, a yellow flag reverted the field to the last completed lap and Dyer got second back.
Once the green flew again, Nunes continued his torrid pace and raced away from Dyer and Michnowicz who were in a tussle for second. Michnowicz used a similar move in turn two when he slid up in front of Dyer and took the runnerup spot on lap seven. He was then about four car lengths behind Nunes. Michnowicz did not lose much ground, but he did not make up much on the leader in either open territory or lapped traffic.
Another yellow and a lapped car between himself and Michnowicz for the restart was all Nunes needed to lock up the victory. When the green light came back on, Nunes, in his black A.R.P/Wilwood/Kirkey #2, took full advantage of the lapped car and streaked to nearly a half straight lead as Michnowicz fought to get by the lapper. When the race ended, it was Nunes with room to spare over Michnowicz and Dyer. Former SCRA Sprint Car drivers Alex Grigoreas of Upland and Placentia’s Dan Hillberg were fourth and fifth.
Hillberg out qualified the 18-car field with a lap of 13:288. In addition to Nunes, Grigoreas and Dickey won heat races.
Michnowicz tacked a few more points on the board and now leads second place Grigoreas by 88-markers after the first four races. Dyer, Hillberg and James Heling still man positions three through five.
The CLS heads to the Santa Maria Raceway on May 9th followed Perris Auto Speedway for the annual Salute to Indy on May 23rd. The next CLS race at Bakersfield will be June 20th.
