Terry was set to have his best sprint car season ever in Big Game car running top five in Outlaw points when he suffered a serious arm injury (severed bicep tendon) requiring surgery and a long recovery.   Sammy was brought in to fill Terry's seat and did just what Sammy does which is kick butt up front for the rest of the season.  Grabbing your seat back from Sammy is a tall task for any driver and after Terry healed he started back in his own ride where he won right out of the gate only to suffer a severe broken leg due to a busted drive shaft.   Terry had only been back racing for two weeks when he suffered the broken leg and again went through surgery and rehab costing him another race season.    Together Terry missed almost two full seasons of racing due to injuries to arm and leg.

I have been in the pits around Terry after races at several tracks but primarly Knoxville as I lived there for five years and never missed a regular Knoxville Saturday night race during that time period.   Between those five full seasons plus other tracks where I have seen him race it is not a stretch to say I have been in the pits and watched Terry interact with fans after races at least 100 times which is being conservative.  I only added the previous info about my experience so others reading this can rest assured what I say next is based on facts from a ton of encounters being around Terry in the pits.

(1) Terry was always great with the fans.  Win or lose he always stayed there and signed autographs for fans.   He signed whatever they handed him and never denied an autograph to anyone because it was something he didn't like.   I wish I had a dollar for everytime I have seen him sign a Kinser, Swindell, or other driver shirt.   Not only does Terry sign all autographs but he will also engage in banter back and forth with fans who are wanting to talk with him.   It was never just a quick sign and next with Terry unless the fan chose to be quiet and walk away, ESPECIALLY WITH KIDS.

(2) Kids - There is not a race car driver out there period who interacts with the kids after races better than Terry McCarl.  He loves the little race fans he gets a chance to sign autographs for.   There is no doubt he has a soft spot for the kids and would talk to all of them and often he was the one trying to get the talking started as kids can tend to be shy when standing close to an idol.   I've even see him put kids in his sprint car when they weren't too shy and were willing.

After reading posts by Oswald and Parrisisland I felt obligated to post something setting the record straight.   I will not get into a pissing match with either one of them despite the ignorance and disrespect of their comments.    Bottom line is Terry McCarl is a great sprint car driver and a great ambassador for the sport.   He loves his race fans and always goes the extra mile for all kids who approach him.    We all have our favorite drivers but that does not give you the green light to bash the others you don't like and say things that are incorrect or down right disrespectful.

I am appalled at what I have read on here lately and not just the negative posts about Terry.   I came on here to get racing information and occasionally post but will make this one my last ever as I am sick and tired of reading the crap posted by a few.   On a positive note I will say how excited I am about the new NSL and Tony Stewart's buying the All Stars and Renegade Series.   Should make for a great 2015 sprint car season.

Great post!!! McCarl family is a class act and great for the sport. The Osky races they promote are always a great time and the most family fun races you can go to... I don't know him personally but T-Mac would be my shoe if I were fortunate enough to own a sprint car team...Not to mention his wife is easy on the eyes! lol

Feese 11---I hope this is not your last post as it is something worth  while to read.  This is a perfect example of you do not have to be rude and crude to state an opinion, but I guess some people only know how to spell 4 letter words.

Is it possible to just like or dislike a particular driver?

Several years ago, when Terry was still in the Big Game car, my dad and I were standing in the pits at the National Open at McCarl's trailer when he pulled back in from putting heat in the motor.  We were standing out of the way, just listening and enjoying the smell of the burning alky.  When Terry's job in the car was done, he jumped out and shook our hands and asked us how we were doing.  My dad asked him a question regarding some fluid leaking and he took time to explain why that was happening.  Great experience and have rooted for Terry ever since.  I never did understand why he has the bad reputation by some people on this board.

TMAC is a class act.  There are several other notable drivers that are similar but few are as friendly to fans and support the sport we love more than he does.
