CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINT CAR SERIES KICKS OFF 22ND SEASON SATURDAY IN EL CENTRO!

(Placentia, CA, March 3, 2015)  The California Lightning Sprint Car Series will kick off its 22nd season of racing this Saturday night, March 7, at the California Mid-Winter Fair and Fiesta on the Imperial County Fairgrounds in El Centro.  Racing is slated to start at 5:00 PM at the Wells Fargo Commercial Banking Entertainment Center on the fairgrounds.

The top five in the 2014 championship chase will all be in action at the season opener on the lightning quick quarter-mile clay oval.  Lomita veteran Bobby Michnowicz won his second title in the last three seasons by 61-points over San Diego’s Damon Arnett last season.  Jeff Dyer of Fort Irwin led much of the way in the championship standings in 2014, but had to settle for third in the end.  Rookie of the Year Cory Hoover of Corona and Murietta veteran Zach Zauss rounded out the top five in points and will be on hand to challenge last year’s top three on Saturday.

Hoover won a torrid fight over Murrieta’s Cori Andrews and Jeremy Queener of Torrance to capture last year’s rookie title.  Like Hoover, Andrews and Queener will be on hand to launch their sophomore seasons in the series on Saturday.

In the prior 21-seasons, the highly competitive series has produced an amazing 17-different champions.  Only Greg Bragg (2000, 2001, 2002), Brent Sexton (1999, 2008) and Michnowicz (2012, 2014) have won the crown more than one time.  With another win this season, Michnowicz, who is the only past champion who will race the full schedule in 2015, would tie Bragg with three all-time titles.

The 2015 CLS schedule is populated with 16 dates of racing.  Bakersfield Speedway, Ventura Raceway and Perris Auto Speedway will each host four races.  There will be two races each in El Centro and at the Santa Maria Speedway.  Two of the races will be run on a 1/5-mile track (Ventura), while four each will be held on ¼ miles (El Centro & Santa Maria), 1/3/mile (Bakersfield) and ½-mile (Perris).

The next race on the schedule after Saturday’s opener will be at Bakersfield on March 21st.   The final race of the campaign will be back in El Centro on November 7.
