Shane Golobic wins a wild Tribute to Gary Patterson main event at the Stockton Dirt Track while Kyle Hirst celebrates back to back King of the West titles

By Gary Thomas

Stockton, CA – November 2, 2014…After wrapping up the Civil War Series title on Sunday Fremont’s Shane Golobic proceeded to then carve his way from 14th starting and claim his second career King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series victory, during what was a wild back & forth 30-lap Tribute to Gary Patterson.

Golobic was the fourth different leader in the race and became the farthest back starting driver to win a King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series feature since 2012. The now 23-year-old claimed his only other series victory back in 2008 at his home track of Ocean Speedway. His triumph came aboard the Joe VonSchriltz Racing No. 121 Sprinter.

“This is pretty awesome to come out here and win the Tribute to Gary Patterson tonight,” Golobic commented. “We’ve been so close to a win with the King of the West Series the last couple years that it feels pretty special right now. When you get a win with this series you know that you’ve beat some of the best in the business and it’s never easy. I can’t thank my entire team enough for all their support.”

The final 30-lap main event for 2014 came to the line with first-time Dash winner Scott Parker of Coarsegold and San Jose’s Tim Kaeding on the front row. At the waving of the green flag Kaeding charged into the lead, while Parker’s strong night came to end on lap three when he caught a rut and got upside down. With rain the last couple days some definite rough spots developed and made it a definite cowboy up race track.

Various slowdowns plagued the flow of the race, but positions changed regularly as drivers from the rear of the field made their way to the front. Rutherford’s Rico Abreu and Hanford’s DJ Netto battled for the runner up spot, before Netto was able to assume the spot on lap 11. At this same time Abreu had a right rear tire going down, which ultimately caused him to stop and bring out a yellow. On the restart Netto kept pace with leader Kaeding and made it a battle for the lead.

With Netto all over Kaeding the complexion of the race changed on lap 18, when Netto got to his inside for the lead through the first & second corners. Some contact ensued, which caused Kaeding to spin sideways, bringing out a yellow flag. Despite the fact TK kept going he was charged with the yellow and forced to go to the rear of the field. While this went on, a fuel stop was needed that brought things to a halt.

Netto would lead the field back to green, but it would be short lived as he jumped the cushion in turn four and allowed 16th starting Jason Statler the chance to shoot under for the top spot. The Big Guy had made some great moves to pick his way to the front and looked for his second win of the season. Everyone’s eyes were also glued Abreu and Kaeding, who were making some thrilling passes charging through the field. Abreu had come from the back and made it all the way up to second on lap 21.

Just when it looked like Abreu had a chance to track down Statler, an issue on the right front would drop him a couple spots and then fall off the track with about five laps remaining. Fourteenth starter Shane Golobic now found himself in second and the Taco Bravo/ Civil War champ proceeded to close in through traffic. Attention was also placed on Tim Kaeding, who was certainly determined marching his way back to the front. Kaeding sliced his way back up to fourth with just a few laps to go.

With victory in Statler’s sights he looked to be on way to the checkered, only to have the yellow lights flash on for a spun car on the backstretch. Moments after this Statler slowed to a stop after running out of fuel. The tough end to his bid at victory moved Golobic up to the lead and when the green flag waved again he pulled away from the field to claim the checkered by 1.445 seconds over 17th starter Willie Croft of Sacramento. Tim Kaeding came home third, with 11th starter Bud Kaeding in fourth and 15th starter Colby Copeland rounding out the top-five.

Despite having a tough night on Sunday Chico’s Kyle Hirst wrapped up the 2014 King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series championship. He becomes the first back to back series champion since Brent Kaeding accomplished the feat in the mid 1990’s. “It’s pretty cool to join the list of drivers that have won this championship more than once and I can’t thank Dennis & Teresa Roth enough for giving me the chance to drive this car. I want to thank my whole team and all the people that support us. Hopefully we can be back here next year celebrating three in a row.”

Kyle Hirst scored victory in the 12-lap Last Chance Showdown, with Scott Parker winning the dash and earning $1000 cash. The three 10-lap heat races were picked off by Evan Suggs, DJ Netto and Rico Abreu. Carson Macedo opened the night by re-setting his own KWS track record at the Stockton Dirt Track by clocking a 13.008.
