Silver Crown™ News Saturday, 18 August 2007

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. of Olive Branch, Miss. became the youngest winner of the "Tony Bettenhausen 100" Saturday at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, driving Tony Stewart's Chevrolet/Bass Pro Shops Maxim/Chevy to victory in the curfew-shortened 75-mile event. Stenhouse trailed his teammate and pole winner Levi Jones for the first 28 laps, then took the lead on a restart and led the rest of the way. Jones pressured Stenhouse until his right rear tire blew two laps from the checkered flag, relegating him to a 23rd-place finish.

Billy Wease finished second with a late-race charge, followed by new K & N Silver Crown Silver Crown Series point leader Bud Kaeding, Paul White and Shane Cottle.

Kaeding, the defending series champion, emerged with a 26-point lead over Wayne Reutimann Jr., which finished 16th in Saturday's race, which was shortened from 100 to 75 miles.

Saturday's race also feature the largest starting field in series history on dirt, as 39 cars faced the green flag after rains washed out qualifications.

Stenhouse, who also won the only previous Silver Crown race on dirt this season at Phoenix, Ariz. in February, earned $11,000 for his win.

Unbelievable that nobody looked @ this kid until someone got hurt & he filled in. Wonder if Tony will keep him or let someone else grab him up as he is about the hottest thing going right now.

Sprintcarfanatic.

I agree w/ you. I thought for sure during the winter someone would have picked him up after his season last year. Ran really well during Ohio Speedweek at tracks he never raced before. Also ran some Non-wings races like 4-Crown and some others.

Looks like I better go buy a shirt from Ricky's home site w/ TSR on it. lol

Its to bad to hear that Hines is out for the rest of the year.

A bit disheartening last winter, especially following the winter (05/06) with a deal, no deal WoO plan. And then last winter with several team and owners acting interested, acknowledging his talent only to turn to the only interest that counted, what kind of money he could bring with him. Again, another no go. That haul going out to Phoenix in February was much different than the haul back. At least there was the little "showed you" satisfaction for the soul.

Two (2) questions that I now wonder about.

What the brain trusts of those teams are thinking now?

Could it be a "Driver of the Year" type of performance by Ricky so far?

About Tracy-

Tracy Hines is making excellent progress in his recovery and rehab. He's well on his way back to being physically 100%. The guy is still as sharp as ever. It just requires time.

TSR would be stupid to ever let go of Stenhouse. If Hines comes back by all rights they should just run another car. If it was a choice between Hines and STenhouse who should they go with? I'd say STenhouse but thats just my opinion.

...any Parsons or Rager reports?...looks like they started 16 & 22...finished 6 & 15...any memorable dashes like last year?...39 Dirt Champ Cars, great to see the teams still turn out for so few races...despite their best efforts, USAC can't kill off the BigCars...how long are they going to stick with those monster lawn mowers before they bring these classic beauties back to the shorter pavement tracks (like IRP & Richmond) so they can have some decent fields & racing again?

Both JP & Roger ran smooth, steady races and avoided other people's troubles.

The 5 car went into the wall just in front of JP on Lap 2 but JP said he'd seen the front end washout the lap before so he was watching for it & went low to avoid. He'd picked up 5 spots when the first caution flew. After the race JP still had enough tire left to run the 25 laps that were cut from the event.

Roger had electrical problems in hot laps, which handicapped him, since the race was lined up by times run in hot laps. Car looked excellent.
