My dad and I ventured to Atomic last evening for two reasons. One, we were curious to see the Renegades run their first show, and two, we wanted to get to Atomic to see a race. Both of us struggled to remember the last time we went to Atomic,(maybe 85 or 86? KC?)so we decided to go.
After the 3 hour drive from Rittman, Ohio, we arrived and were greeted by 10 drivers with their cars parked right at the gate. We talked with Travis Philo, Danny Smith and Caleb Helms. This was so cool. I hope they do this for every race. While speaking with the drivers, I did not detect any animosity...but there was frustration and bewilderment. The feel was that something had to be done, somebody had to do something...with the hope that things will change for the better.
I took my small cooler in....after the guard at the entrance checked it...just water and Poweraid and goggles inside. Later, someone asked me how I was able to bring a cooler into the track, because they don't allow coolers at Atomic? Well, I didn't know that. I am glad no one hassled me about it at the gate. Good move Atomic.
Atomic is not at all how I remember it. My gosh, it is a smaller version of Eldora. High banked, concrete walls, stupid high speed. Hot laps took my breath away as the speeds of a big track combined with the smaller track size made for an edge of your seat experience. I cannot believe that we have overlooked this track. If you have not visited Atomic, you owe it to yourself to go. It is ridiculous....in a good way.
When they rolled out the sprints to start the motors and get heat in them before hot laps, the announcer identified each car number with a driver....and this was done WHEN YOU COULD ACTUALLY HEAR THE ANNOUNCER! Thank you Atomic, for not making the fans try to hear this over the sound of screaming engines...
Then the Renegade people passed out a survey to get demographic information and opinions from the fans. I like that because I felt someone wanted to about me and my point of view. After all, the fans pay all the bills, right?
Taylor Ferns is the real deal. Cole Duncan and Caleb Helms were so fast! Up by the fence, flying through the bumpy part of the turns with reckless abandon. But youth would not be served on this night as the more experienced pros hung around....and pounced at the end....when it mattered.
Overall, a great experience. A memorable night for sure. Thank you racers, thank you Atomic. I will be back in October for the $15,000 to win, $1000.00 to start show.

Great post, wish there were more like this.
Half the lies they tell about me aren't true.

I like that they passed out a survey to the fans at the track. The series will learn some valuable information about their customers, what their customers expect from the new series and what kind of a product the Renegades need to deliver to the fan. More series and tracks should do that.

How in depth did these surveys? Can anyone recall any of the questions asked?

I was in the parking lot drinking until time trials had already started so I think I missed the survey. I agree with the original poster though, it was a really good night of racing. When I saw the dust flying off the track from the parking lot during time trials I was getting a little scared but the dust was not bad at all. There was a rough spot on turn 1 that either they could avoid or attempt to drive through that made things interesting but all in all a good night off racing. I felt really bad for Duncan, Hannagan was not going to catch him unless something happened to his car like that.
I hear a lot of people who have refered to Atomic as a little Elldora, if you really want to get an idea of the banking I suggest going into the pits and standing over there by turn 1 or 2 and checking it out. You really want to have fun get stuck in the infield after a downpour and try to make it out of the track, personally not happened to me but I have watched people try it. I dont get to races as much anymore but when I do Atomic/KC is always the first track I check to see what is going on. The probelm with it is, is just like Eldora when the track is in not good shape the races can really be boring and with the previous owner or 2 that got to be more common then the good nights. The new ownership seems to be doing a better job at track prep to get a more consistent show from what I have heard. In fariness I am busy most weekends and this is only the third race of have beeen too there since they took over last year.

They asked you to circle some options given to identify what age, education and income level you fell into...
For example, your age, please circle one of the following... 18-30, 31-45, 46-65, 66-80...
Then they asked how many races you attend per year, how many miles do you travel to see races, if you buy products that racing sponsors advertise, etc.
How many miles did you travel to attend this Atomic Renegades race?
They asked if you stayed in hotels when you went to the races and if a discount on the rate, provided by a series sponsor, would encourage you to use hotels or motels more when traveling to races...
The survey asked for you to write in the tracks you would like to see the Renagade series appear at.
There may have been a couple more but these are the ones I remember...

this series seems to be doing many things to grow i think it would help if they had a traditional website and not just facebook and twitter, probably could reach more folks and get more interaction.

How is having two racing series splitting the driver base going to help the area tracks? When these series go head to head who suffers? The NST didn't work and they had (supposedly) the best drivers. How many tickets sold can be attributed to the popularity of individual drivers? Will these drivers/team owners help out the track promoter who loses his ass during this "war"?
Maybe the survey they need to distribute should go to the tracks before the fans. If the goal of the Renagades is to hurt the All Stars, who is really suffering? Surely, you realize Webb isn't going to pack up and quit, don't you?
Oh, I read about drivers thanking the fans for coming out. Well, shouldn't that be done at every race? What kept them from doing it before?

So because Webb's the status quo, that's it?
That market data is huge to drawing sponsors - looks like the Renegades are making the right decisions. Market data is worth a lot these days and tough to get in some businesses. They have people willingly handing it over. Great move on their part.
Sponsors = better purses = more competitors and a better quality of competition = better crowds.

Exactly my point ,,,I will do like Knoxville did and not support either series like when the NST went up against the Outlaws. I will not go to a watered down show over a pissing match. If the Renegade sprint series makes it great but nobody can think this is not going to be good for anyone.Tracks get less attendance, cars ,and local support. The drivers may wish for better things but we all know the history . Without a mediator the drivers cannot run a series. When drivers and owners get involved with an organization things always go south. Its tough getting everyone to agree. It boils down to leadership and you will never get that with multiple leaders.

the nst didn't make it because they didn't last beyond the first year because fred died.
in 2006 nthe woo raied their tow money and signing bonuses. in 2007 after the nst folded the tow money was cut and most of the bonuses dropped.
competition is good for the teams because it make the sanctioning bodies have to go after them and actually DO something for them.
if you think the goal is to hurt anyone instead of trying to help the drivers and teams in anyt situation like this you are uninformed.
as far as head to head, well if that happened i guess the fans and teams will decide where they want to race and where they want to see races.
to indy and beyond!!
