Hall, Shelby, Hammett and Youngman score at Knoop Memorial

Marysville, CA. MRP’s biggest stock car race of the season was won by Yuba City’s Phillip Shelby Saturday night. It was the second annual Billy Knoop Memorial Race. Oroville’s “Hammer Down” Heath Hall roared to another dominant victory in the MRP Winged Sprint Car class. Olivehurst’s Eddie Hammett won the Hobby Stock main event and Grass Valley’s Brett Youngman returned to victory lane in the MRP Wingless Sprint Car closer. Knoop was a popular, good natured MRP Super Stock Car champion who lost his life in a motorcycle traffic accident in 2012.

Shelby was simply the class of the field as he held onto the lead with smooth consistent laps all race long. His victory thrust him into the point lead of the division. Arch rival Corey Hall also of Yuba City, who came into the event tied with Shelby for the title finished fourth.

“Iron Man” Cort Dozier kept Shelby honest throughout the contest, but, in the end, Shelby stayed in control with Dozier finishing in second ahead of James Castleberry who came across in third.

The race was filled with long green flag segments on the superbly prepared MRP clay. With temperatures approaching triple digits the surface was hooked up and smoking fast by feature event time.

In the premiere MRP Winged Sprint Car Series Oroville’s Heath Hall made it two in a row in a blisteringly fast event. Hall, who found out this week that he is going to be a father, cinched up the belts and led every lap of the contest with three time champion Colby Wiesz, of Colfax, in hot pursuit.

The original start was called back when pole sitter Jeremy Hawes of Marysville was penalized two rows for jumping the original start. At the new green Hall was gone and Wiesz settled into a ten lap tussle with championship point contender Peter Paulson from Woodland for the runner up spot.

After a series of incidents that eventually sent Hawes and point leader John Michael Bunch of Paradise to the pits, the Wiesz/Paulson duel came to an end with Wiesz taking second. But, only seven laps remained in the contest. Wiesz closed rapidly, but ran out of time and Hall stormed across the finish line with a healthy lead over Wiesz, Paulson and lady racer Reyna Krueger.

Hall is really on his game and also set fast time for the event earlier in the evening.

The MRP Wingless finale was a thriller as point leader Tim Sherman of Sacramento and Grass Valley’s Brett Youngman hooked up in a race-long war to the checkers. Youngman bolted to an early lead and Sherman was all over Youngman, trying to get by. This one got the fans on their collective feet.

Marysville’s Josh Vieira joined the battle in the late stages and the lead trio put on a superb show storming to the checker just inches apart with Youngman just beating Vieira to the line. Sherman settled for third.

Olivehurst’s Eddie Hammett took another step toward the title in the MRP Hobby Stock class. Hammett won by over a half of a lap over his nearest competition. “Gentleman Jim” Waller was second after a terrific dice with Sacramento’s Roger Ward. Ward stayed third in his first ever appearance at MRP

Next Saturday night MRP will take its long awaited summer break before turning the lights on August 16th when the mighty Winged Sprint Cars headline at the Merle Shepherd Memorial Race. More later.

Gates open at 5 with racing at 7.
