Sprints Speeding into Sumter…
Hemby Bridge, NC – Jacob McLain of the Carolina RaceSaver Sprint Car Series may have won the last three battles in the North State over the past month, but Tony Grams is winning the war thus far including the inaugural Sumter Speedway sprint car event back on May 17th.
Winning three of the first four events on the 2014 Carolina sprint schedule, Tony rides into Sumter Speedway with a commanding points lead. Not only does the Minnesota Mafia Ring Leader lead the series with four wins, he’s finished on the podium in all but one event. Streaks like that are capable of putting drivers in national sprint car rankings at the end of the year at the Knoxville Hall of Fame.
Gram’s archenemy over the past two years has gone on a hot streak himself in recent weeks. Jacob McLain has picked off three wins since a tragic Turn One mishap left him upside down on the initial lap at Sumter in May. Apparently, having to watch Mr. Grams cruise to a flag to flag victory on May 17th was enough push Jake over the edge. Three weeks later, McLain would sweep the Joe and Jim Summer Sprint Classic at Carolina Speedway and East Lincoln Speedway. Two weeks after that, Jake and Tony would put on one of the best battles the young series has ever experienced with Jake getting the upper hand halfway through the feature for victory number three.
Lurching in the shadows of Grams and McLain is the bright yellow 77 sprinter driven by Kernerville’s own Mike Leraas. A consistent season of six top 5’s has put Michael second in points. No driver ever wishes another driver misfortune, but Grams is just one tiny mistake away from letting the Big Yellow Machine take over the series point standings.
Sumter Speedway proved to be a game changer two months ago. A huge crowd witnessed lightening fast practices followed by competitive heat race action. Unfortunately to several drivers, the feature would provide Youtube viewers with plenty of violent footage for the world to see. Luckily, everyone would walk away. Some with shiny trophies, some with broken hearts…
To all the fans planning on attending the second running of the sprints, be sure to stay clear of turn one. It can be a dangerous dozy! Be safe and bring a friend!
