Not much on the site lately. For something to do, look up Roy Andrews racing from the 50's ,60' 70's . Roy is one nice guy and was a heck of a racer for many years.

I first met Roy Andrews at Air Capital Speedway at Wichita during my rookie year as a semi-late model driver in 1966.  I noticed that I was catching him during the feature race one night.  I didn’t catch many people in those days, let alone a name driver like Roy Andrews!  To make a long story short, I wasn’t able to catch him.  The checkered flag dropped before I got up to him but I definitely had been coming!  I couldn’t wait to see Roy at the pay window and tell him about my just having fallen short of catching him in the feature.  When I got to the line for the pay window, Roy was talking with someone else so I waited patiently for my turn to talk to him.  While I waited, I overheard him telling the man he was talking to, that he had blown his racing engine the previous weekend and didn’t have a motor for this weekend’s races.  He said he just couldn’t sit home though, so he had taken the 6-cylinder engine from his wife’s ’55 Ford station wagon every-day-driver and put it in his race car just to have something to bring out to the racetrack.  I remember him telling the other man how sick his wife’s engine was and that he couldn’t wait to get his new racing engine which should be finished before the next weekend.  All of a sudden, it didn’t seem very important that I tell Roy how close I had come to catching him with his purely stock ’55 Ford 6-cylinder engine only to fall a little short in my quest.

I didn’t have a ride for the 1968 season so I went to see Roy to see if he knew of anyone wanting a driver.  Roy told me that he planned to drive his own car that year but that one of his former car owners had just called offering him a ride for the upcoming season.  He told me who it was and said that I could ask that owner for the ride if I wanted to.  Roy told me that I could tell the owner that he had sent me.  I did that.  The car owner told me that, while he didn’t recall ever watching me drive, if Roy had sent me, then that was good enough for him and I could start with the first race of the new season.  The owner was pleased with what he saw and I was invited to drive his car for the remainder of the year.  The car owner, Roy, and I are all still good friends to this day.

Roy was the Pace car for the OVSCRA for a couple of years in his 1933 Plymouth Sedan. Roy sold the #33 car a couple years ago, wish I had know he had it for sale, it would've been a good one to put on the track. Roy is a really cool guy!!
