MATT MITCHELL GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE IN PERRIS VICTORY
By Lance Jennings

PERRIS, CA – JUNE 15, 2014... Leading all 30-laps, Yorba Linda’s Matt Mitchell claimed Saturday’s Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car main event at Perris Auto Speedway. For Mitchell, the $2,500 triumph was his first win of the season and marked his sixth USAC/CRA victory, tying Levi Jones, Bud Kaeding, and Blake Miller. Richard Vander Weerd, Austin Williams, “The Cadillac” Cody Williams, and Mike Spencer rounded out the top-five finishers as the group prepares for a Northern California swing to Watsonville and Petaluma.

Piloting his #37 MPD Racing / ART Enterprises Maxim, Matt Mitchell took command from the pole position and began to run away from the field. The veteran driver passed slower traffic at will, but it was not an easy victory. Just past the halfway point, “The Demon” Damion Gardner caught and passed Mitchell with a turn one “slide job.” As Gardner’s mount bounced off the cushion, Matt drove underneath “The Demon” and was able to regain the top spot. Damion mounted another charge, but a flat left rear tire during a caution flag ended his challenge. Looking for his second Perris win, Vander Weerd had inherited second but could not stop Mitchell’s march to the checkered flags.

Currently fourth in points, Matt Mitchell qualified sixth out of the twenty-five races in the pit area and placed second in his heat race. The 2-time “Salute to Indy” winner left his “home track” with one heat race victory, four top-10 finishes, and 33 feature laps led in the campaign.

Richard Vander Weerd of Visalia had to settle for second at Perris Auto Speedway after starting ninth. Racing the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Battery Worx Maxim, the former USAC West Coast champion was ninth fast in time trials and won the Saldana Racing Products / Circle Track Performance Heat Race #3. Vander Weerd left Perris ranked seventh in the point chase with one feature win, two heat race victories, four top-10 finishes, and 10 feature laps led.

Yorba Linda’s Austin Williams charged to third in the main event from seventh. Driving Jack Jory’s #2 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike, Williams qualified seventh overall and placed second in his heat race. The 2009 Rookie of the Year is currently ninth in the standings with one heat race victory, two top-10 finishes, and 17 feature laps led on the season.

“The Cadillac” Cody Williams of Corona took fourth in the 30-lap feature after starting tenth. Piloting Jack Jory’s #44 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike, Williams was tenth quick in time trials and won the 10-lap Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. To date, “The Cadillac” is sixth in points with one heat race win, one Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Semi-Main win, one Keizer Wheels / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award, four top-10 finishes, and 3 feature laps led in 2014.

After battling with engine issues, Temecula’s Mike Spencer earned his first Keizer Wheels / Racing Optics "Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a fifth place finish from twenty-third. Driving Ron Chaffin’s #50 Grubstake Mini Storage / Madera Produce Maxim, Spencer qualified eighteenth and scored eighth in his heat race after an early exit. Using a provisional to start the feature, the five-time champion made his way forward to salvage his night. Currently third in the point chase, Mike has three Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, two heat race victories, five top-10 finishes, and 21 feature laps led.

“The Demon” Damion Gardner of Concord posted his 56th career USAC/CRA Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award and broke a tie with Spencer for the all-time lead. Racing Mark Alexander’s #4 Scott Sales Company / J&D Performance Spike, the defending champion ran fourth in his heat race and briefly took the top spot from Mitchell with a “slide job.” After a flat tire dashed his winning hopes, “The Demon” charged from the back to claim seventh at the checkered flags. The point leader left Perris with a 93 point advantage on the strength of five main event wins, three Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, five heat race victories, seven top-10 finishes, and 99 feature laps led.

Huntington Beach’s Brody Roa took his first heat race win of the season in the DJ Safety sponsored event. Piloting the BR Performance #91R HD Industries / Burris Racing Maxim, Roa was eighth fast in time trials and claimed sixth in the feature after starting eighth. The 2012 Most Improved Driver sits fifth in the point chase with one Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Semi-Main win, one Keizer Wheels / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award and five top-10 finishes.

Gary Taylor of Snohomish, Washington returned from the Midwest and won the 12-lap Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Semi-Main. Driving Gerry Cook’s #04G Lucas Oil / Beaver Stripes RSS, Taylor placed twenty-fourth in time trials after having problems, ran fifth in his heat race, and ran eighth in the main event after starting twenty-first. In limited appearances, the versatile driver has three top-10 finishes and 23 feature laps led on the season.
