USAC/CRA 40-LAP “SALUTE TO INDY” AT PERRIS THIS SATURDAY
by Lance Jennings

SANTA MARIA, CA – MAY 21, 2014... This Saturday, May 24th, the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series will battle at Perris Auto Speedway for the annual “Salute To Indy.” “The Power of Purple Night” benefiting the City of Perris Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society will also showcase the PAS Senior Sprint Cars, PAS Young Gun Sprint Cars, and the California Lightning Sprints. The spectator gates will open at 5:00pm and racing at "America's Premier Dirt Track" will start at 7:00pm.

The annual "Salute To Indy" has been a Southern California tradition going back to 1948 when Dempsey Wilson claimed the checkered flags with the California Racing Association. When Perris Auto Speedway opened their doors in 1996, the Riverside County oval kept the tradition alive and current NASCAR competitor J.J. Yeley scored the victory. Since then, some of the brightest stars in sprint car racing have added the prestigious race to their resume. Last year's winner Matt Mitchell joined “The Kruser” Cory Kruseman, “The Demon” Damion Gardner, “The Bullet” Blake Miller, and Mike Kirby as two-time winners of the Memorial Day Classic. Saturday’s event will be capped off with a 40-lap feature with $3,000 going to the winning driver.

Heading into the sixth point race, “The Demon” Damion Gardner of Concord holds a thirty-nine point advantage over the competition. On May 10th at Ventura, the pilot of Mark Alexander's #4 Scott Sales Company / J&D Performance Spike continued his winning ways by earning his fourth win of the campaign. The defending champion has recorded two Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, four heat race victories, and 75 feature laps led to his credit. “The World’s Fastest Sprint Car Driver” will be looking to extend his point lead and earn his series leading 51st win at the “Salute To Indy.”

Nic Faas of Huntington Beach is second in USAC/CRA point standings. Racing Keith Ford’s #73 Berry Pack / King Racing Products Spike, Faas took second in Ventura’s “All Coast Challenge / Tribute to Jim Thomson.” Entering the event, the former USAC Western Midget Champion has one heat race victory and five top-10 finishes on the season. This Saturday, Nic will have his sights on claiming the $3,000 payday and earning his 11th career USAC/CRA feature win.

Temecula’s Mike Spencer ranks third in the championship points. The driver of Ron Chaffin’s #50 Grubstake Mini Storage / Madera Produce Maxim missed Ventura to spend time with his newborn baby daughter. To date, the five-time champion has two Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, two heat race victories, three top-10 finishes, and 11 feature laps led. Spencer won the “Salute To Indy” in 2012 and will be looking to claim his 35th career USAC/CRA victory at Perris.

Matt Mitchell of Yorba Linda sits fourth in the USAC/CRA point chase. Piloting his #37 MPD Racing / A.R.T. Enterprises Maxim, Mitchell scored twenty-first at Ventura after an early exit. Heading to Perris, the former USAC Western Midget Rookie of the Year has three top-10 finishes and three feature laps led on the year. Matt won his second “Salute To Indy” last May and the veteran driver will have his sights on his sixth USAC/CRA triumph on Saturday.

After scoring third at Ventura, Anaheim’s Jake Swanson has climbed to fifth in the standings. Racing Tom and Laurie Sertich’s #92 Huntington Beach Glass & Mirror / Circle Track Performance Victory, Swanson also earned the first Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award of his career. After five races, the 2012 Rookie of the Year has four top-10 finishes on the season. Jake will be looking to claim his first USAC/CRA victory at the annual “Salute To Indy.”

Currently tenth in points, Gary Taylor of Snohomish, Washington leads the chase for Rookie of the Year honors. Yorba Linda’s Logan Williams, Cody Swanson of Norco, and Verdemont Heights’ Chris Gansen are also in contention.

Among the other drivers expected to be in action are “The Kruser” Cory Kruseman, Brody Roa, Richard Vander Weerd, “The Cadillac” Cody Williams, Austin Williams, “Super” Rickie Gaunt, Ronnie Gardner, Jace Vander Weerd, A.J. Bender, Seth Wilson, Verne Sweeney, Ryan Bernal, David Bezio, Kenny Perkins, and more.

Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in Perris, California. Adult tickets are $25, Senior tickets (65 & older) are $20, Active Military, Students (13-18), and Kids tickets (6-12) are $5. Children’s tickets (5 and under) are FREE.
