BIG J REPORT Presented by DeBerg Concrete
Huset’s 5/18/14
410s (16 Cars)
Welcome Mat
A ton of heavy hitters sign in for the track’s opener:
Craig Dollansky back in his old stomping grounds in the Big Game #7.
Terry McCarl appears in a black #6 for Jeremy Scadden.
Ian Madsen is back up to try to continue his hot streak to end 2013.
Scott Winters is back aboard the Buffalo Wild Wings #82.
Derrik Lusk is over with the 410 from Jackson after skipping Jackson the night before. Justin Henderson appears aboard the BR Speed #21v.
Cole Wood comes up from Knoxville in his Elk Grove Ford #17w.
MIA
Austin McCarl is out after last year as he has no ride for the year. Ryan Bickett didn’t have the 410 to match his 360. No Donovan Peterson in the Empire #9M. Gregg Bakker still doesn’t have a 410 to run this year either. And last but not least, Jason Johnson puts Huset’s on his schedule for the millionth time only to not show up after a disappointing night at Knoxville the night before.
VIP
Shop has been moved since the last Report and we are now on the Midway like the last few years. Important figures to make an appearance: Grandpa Timmy, Sunshine, Nasty Nate and Rossco.
Time Trials (1 lap each)
T-Mac sets quick at a time of 10.760 around the 3/10mile bullring for a speed of 100.371 mph. Dollansky was second quick with a 10.809 lap, Dobmeier third at 10.897, Lynton Jeffrey fourth at 10.923 and Wood rounding out the top five at 10.985.
Winters was sixth followed by Madsen, Jody Rosenboom, Kaley Gharst, Henderson, Dusty Ballenger, Lusk, Chuck McGillivray, Justin Glaser, John Lambertz. Dylan Peterson failed to get a lap in as they had issues all night long.

Heat 1 Notes: Gharst checked out aboard the Mike Sandvig car. Its always good to see our proud sponsor, DeBerg Concrete, get a victory in any car that he helps out get to the track. The track was really slick in 1 and 2 with a heavy cushion half way up the track.

Heat 2 Notes:
Another single file thriller with Winters making a move into second early on and everyone getting in line after that on the cushion. Jeffrey dropped out late and was done for the night with motor troubles. Him dropping out turned to be a turning point in the night as Madsen inherited the pole for the feature because Lynton didn’t finish top six.

A Feature Notes:
Rubber was imminent after a 360 feature that didn’t move the cushion up on the over watered track. Wood would come to an early stop on lap two after drilling the frontstretch wall on the start. He would rejoin the field. Madsen got a huge jump on the start and led Winters, Dollansky, McCarl and Dobmeier on the restart.
Dollansky would get by Winters for second on lap four and McCarl would follow to steal third only to have Winters drive back under the T-Mac slider in turn one. Dobmeier would then try to get fourth from McCarl but would miss his slider in turn three. The action would stop on lap six after Wood somehow puts it above the wall on the backstretch resting on all four. The car rolled away to the trailer but the State Farm sign was broken and done for the rest night as well. During the red, it looked like there were some issues developing for McCarl.
On the restart, McCarl slid Winters into one that made the latter step on the brakes to avoid contact, which Dobmeier was able to drive by as well. Winters would then stop in turn three with issues on the left rear shock. Under that yellow, McCarl would head to the infield with top wing problems. He would rejoin after parts were taken off the 360 winner of Eric Lutz.
Madsen continued his lead but Dollansky quickly closed in around lap nine and that is when rubber started to develop all the way around. Madsen did what he needed to do to get around a few lappers and held off The Crowd Pleaser for the $2,500 win. The win is actually the third in a row at Huset’s for the Aussie, and was his fourth overall. Dollansky held onto a second in his weekly return ahead of Dobmeier, Gharst and Rosenboom who rounded out the top five.
360s (15 Cars)
I promise I will have more notes next week for the Minnesota Mafia races but its past midnight after a long night at the softball diamond.
Essentially, Brandon Halverson in his Huset’s debut, was bad fast out in front all night until he tried going under a lapper in turn three and drilled the inside berm. He then went flipping up the hill in turn three in a wild series of flips. A small fire ensued but was put out and second place runner Lutz spun out to avoid contact without making contact to have the restart lead.
Isaac Schreurs was also a result of the squirrel that wrecks a bunch of good equipment every year as he dumped one down the backstretch trying to go around that slow car.
He then checked out on the field in the Scadden #6 360 sprinter for his 17th career win in the class. My boy Lou Kennedy, Jr. held onto second, Matt Juhl was third, Brant O’Banion fourth and Ryan Jones collecting his first career top five at the track.
360 Finish:
6, 21K, 09, 47, 4, 12s, 21, 11J, 75 (DNF), 12/ 13JM, 612, 20k, 13MJ, 17B,
Report Stats:
Career WoO A Main wins in the field: 72
Career Huset’s 410 wins in the field: 183
Savage Quote of the Night:
I’m bringing this bad boy back since the funniest man in the world will never be back at Huset’s.
Its from the July 3rd, 2013 debacle of a WoO race:
“I will never step foot in this shit hole ever again.”
Amen my man.
Report Notes:
Anthem is sung at exactly 7pm sharp so we were off to a great start.
Beer grader activities started at 8:17pm and finished at 8:38pm.
Super dirty in the stands with slick a frontstretch and the wind blowing out of the southeast into our face.
The scoreboard was down for the count as it did not work once all night. And this is the “Home of the Professionals” moment of the night. Real hard to keep track of laps since I was using the phone to keep track of some notes…
But the Race Monitor app was up for the first time ever for weekly competition. Now let’s find out what every other race track does and link up the scoreboard with the electric scoring of the app!
Big thank you to Tony Stewart Racing and Simpson for the sponsorship of the best safety crew in America. Jay Masur and crew are the best in the biz and now they are known for being the guys that helped Smoke at Osky last year.
Last night was the first night of Pay-Per-View for $19 online. Have not heard how it was from the loyal followers out of town, but did receive multiple texts that Tassler was muted on multiple broadcasts.
Speaking of PPV, will Huset’s start naming their weekly shows like the WWE does for Summer Slam, WrestleMania, and the Royal Rumble? I think there’s a huge marketing opportunity there. I nominate next week to Hell in a Cell Pt. 1!
New infield report guy after last year’s debacle down in the pits. Must be the reason as to why yours truly didn’t get a phone call for the position. On that note, we all miss Hot Rod down there telling us about everything under the sun. And we are not kidding. I want to know when a Jacob’s Ladder is junk, dammit. Every. Single. One.
Memorial Day Weekend has always been known for 410’s on Sunday and Monday but in 2014 that will not happen. On a related note, we were not reminded 25 times to go buy our Beef Bucks on Sunday night.
Dollar Loan Center is back on board for a $10K to win, $5K for second invitational at the end of the year. Cars must finish top five in time trials or top five in the feature to qualify. Also, any car with 75% attendance will be thrown in the field. Will we have more than 15 cars for this huge finale this year??
The Report is up before results are up on the Huset’s website as well. Yaaaaaaaaaaa budday!
When Ian was in victory lane he said he would be up to the “2-1-2” for beers afterwards. Great to hear in his Aussie accent in victory lane. Beers were had before and after at the 2-1-2 as it is still the best racing bar in America. Ian has now netted $22,500 in his four career wins at the track as well.
We don’t know how often or if we will do this again, but due to the high demand from posters and lurkers it was time to get the dust off the ol’ laptop and put one together. Thank you to everyone for the kind words of encouragement to bring this bitch back to life. Until then, you stay classy San Diego.
