Has anyone else noticed that the Race Monitor App is now going to a subscription with its new version. I only noticed because I got a different Ipad and loaded the app and opened it and it said "no subscription" I googled it and found little about it but finally found an article that explained that the new version of the app is going to go to a subscription deal. At first I was annoyed just because it seems like you can't do anything anymore without a monthly fee, but reading further I did find out that the subscription is going to be either $0.99/month or $4.99 for a year. I guess thats not so bad for a whole year and I do use it quite a bit.

Their selling the change as better because with a subscription you will be able to use the monitor with your preferences over 5 devices as opposed to the old version you had to set your preferences per device and if you paid for the higher version as opposed to the free version, you only got it on 1 device. A little unneccessary IMO because for the most part the free version did everything I wanted anyways so preferences weren't a big deal but I suppose there were people who wanted to set certain driver alerts on the paid version. They did say that if you had the app previously you will get a free subscription till July 1st 2014, thats why I never noticed I suppose, because nothing had changed so I didn't notice till I loaded it on a new device. Just thought I'd give a heads up to others who use the app.

i have had race monitor for almost a year and to tell you the truth i'm not sure if the 4.99 i paid for the basic app was a one time fee or was for just one year.

the article says the old app was 4.99 for a year, for one device, so until proven wrong i'm going to take that as accurate.

if that is true then this new subscription thing isn't bad because you now can pay 4.99 for a year and are able to download the app on up to 5 devices and share the subscription code on them all. that means you can use the app on 5 devices for 4.99 per year. so get 5 people to each contribute to the 4.99 and they each can use the app for a year. a dollar a year per person is not bad for the basic app.

now if a person wants to have the "pro" version i'm not sure if there is an extra charge for each devise that wants to upgrade. or if it is a single charge that is able to be shared among the devices.

my version of the app updated itself to the new version and when i go to the "settings" it tells me i have a complimentary subscription thru july 31 2014. i can share the subscription code to other devices that have downloaded the current version.

actually if i understand everything, it is really not a bad deal as now families with multiple phones or devices can pay for one subscription and use it for 5 devices, or 5 different friends can share one subscription even if they have different devices.

There is also www.race-monitor.com that shows a lot of the results.

So if they are going to start charging $4.95 a year, it seems to me that they are going to have to charge for the website too.

the web site shows race "results" from what i can tell.

that is different from real time race timing and scoring that the app offers.

they also say the app will have some events that are free, so to me that means you don't have to have a subscription to view them.

as i said i have had the app for less than a year so i can't remember if the old version i bought was a one time fee or if it was renewable every year. maybe others who have had the app longer can clarify the terms of the old app.

i did recently upgrade to the plus version.

still it seems that 5 bucks a year for an app that can be used for 5 different devices by 5 different people is not bad, epecially if the old app was 5 bucks a year for one device.

The way I see it Buzz, and not saying for certain I'm right but this is how I look at it. When you previously bought the pro version for your device, that was a 1 time charge and by buying the higher version you got some extra features. Now what they are going to do is charge this fee either monthly or yearly, whichever you choose and you get access to the pro version as well as being able to share the app across several devices, rather than having to buy the pro version twice or more if you have different devices. The main thing thats going away is the free version of the app, which in most cases was sufficient for me at least. I don't see this as a terrible thing since the price is quite low, I just started to get annoyed when I saw it was going to subscription but hadn't seen the price yet, thinking they were gonna charge like $5 or $10 a month, but thats not the case and I think the price is reasonable. I'm not really trying to complain about the price here, I just know quite a few people use the app so I wanted to bring this change up so people would know it was taking place.

as far as i know the app was never free. the exception is now you can download the app for free, then you purchase the subscription from within the app. when you download the app it doesn't function, except for some limited "free" events, until you pay the subscription.

i paid 4.99 or something for the basic app, then 4.99 to upgrade to the plus version when i bought the old version.

the info says there is an "in app" upgrade available to the plus version in the new release. to me that means once you have paid for the basic working app you can upgrade to plus, just like before.

i am not meaning to argue, just relating what i read and how i understand it. i guess we will find out for sure in time.

also the info says that the old app was 4.99 or something to use for one year. if that is true then there really is no change to anything except now you pay 4.99 for a year and can use it on up to 5 different devises instead of just one. then you can upgrade each devise to plus if you choose. the thing i don't know is if you pay one "plus" fee and it allows you to upgrade all of the 5 devises on the subsription, or if you have to pay a separate fee to upgrade each devise.

again if my understanding of things is correct everything is the same as before, except you now can get the use of the basic working version on 5 devises for the same price as the cost of one devise in the old version. even if you have to pay to upgrade each devise to the plus version, you are still ahead of the total cost from before.

It does not cost the track anything.  Fremont and Attica are starting it this season.

Your right Buzz, I had to think for a while but now do remember that the original basic version did cost me something like $5. I had a hard time remembering cause it was like 3 years ago when I originally bought it on my IPod touch and since then have simply added it to my different, new IOS devices I've gotten so since then it hasn't cost me anything more cause I've just added it with my itunes account where it shows up as a previously purchased app. For $5 a year I'm thinking its a useful enough app I'll pay the subscription and keep getting it.

We are starting it at Lernerville this season as well. A basic Race-Monitor package is free to the track with customizable options available later on at a cost. As for getting the live-timing to appear on the track website, it is possible (and free) and Race-Monitor staff is willing to work with tracks that would like to include that. And yes, you can view most all of the live-timing for free on www.race-monitor.com.

From my recent personal experience, the staff at Race-Monitor really show a great deal of effort in providing a satisfactory product. If you ever have any problems or suggestions do not hesitate to contact them as they are great in assisting with all of the technical issues that may be hindering your experiences.
